#TheLittleThings **1/2 (Out of 4) “The Little Things” is not your conventional thriller. The cast, which includes Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto, is stacked and all of them fully elevate the material. The movie is advertised as a cat and mouse thriller between cops and a serial killer. In the end the film reveals that it is more about guilt and living with past sins. The third act is risky and will probably irritate audiences who no doubt want to see a movie along the lines of “Seven” and “Silence Of The Lambs”. I appreciated the filmmakers going for something different but I think they really missed the mark. I also can’t ignore some of the big leaps in logic and the unbelievable decisions these characters make. What stands out are the performances and the direction. This movie lacks the sheer terror of the earlier entries but does have a lot of intense scenes as well as some of the best emotional moments of the franchise. I love that the filmmakers have moved on from the haunted house setups and into a supernatural mystery with demons as well as human antagonists in league with them. Michael Chaves steps in as director and creates a smart and effective thriller with a mystery that needs to be solved. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are better than ever in these roles thanks to a script where they take center stage with a story that goes deep into their psyche as well as their history together. #Spiral ⭐️(Out of 4) I can’t say I’m much of a “Saw” fan. I very much enjoyed the original film. I saw the two follow ups and they were not very good. I did catch “Jigsaw” with my son because he is a fan and it was mediocre at best. When I heard that Chris Rock had an idea to reboot the franchise I was intrigued. The trailers and advertising looked good. The results are so bad it’s almost laughable. Some how this is the worst film that I have seen in this franchise. First of all this is not even close to a fresh start to the franchise. Basically it is more of the same. There is a serial killer at large who puts his victims into torture machines and makes them choose between an extremely painful exit or a gruesome death. The killer and the writers of the movie both think their schemes are smart and full of devious surprises but everything comes off as extremely predictable and kind of sickening. The police characters are so one note and made up of cliches that my mind started to drift towards previous movies with similar characters that had actual depth. Chris Rock creates a detective who spouts off recycled cop jargon but also has comedic riffs that seem straight from his stand up routines. As talented as he is I just found him to be on auto-pilot. In the end I was very disappointed by a reboot that I was looking forward to for once. Also, why was Samuel L. #ArmyOfTheDead ***1/2 (Out of 4) Zack Snyder’s new zombie thriller is one hell of a ride. Snyder creates a world where Las Vegas becomes overrun with the undead and is sealed off from the world. We see this happening during some killer opening credits where we are treated to a bonanza of ultra gruesome death and destruction. A group of thieves lead by Dave Bautista, venture into the city to rob the vault of a casino before a nuclear bomber is set to vaporize the army of the dead. Snyder brings his usual brand of over the top flair to the large set pieces full of carnage. There is also a ton of heart, humor and great performances as well. This includes a particularly troublesome scene where a group of Smoke Jumpers bully a young girl because her boyfriend has a disconnected undercut and vapes. Is that really necessary? It makes this group look like uneducated assholes. Also I honestly wish they dropped the half baked revenge plot and stuck to a real story about Smoke Jumpers”. The brief aerial scenes looked terrific and the split second flashbacks tease a better film.
