“I wish it need not have happened in my time.”
“So do I, and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
-Gandalf, The Fellowship of the Ring: The Shadow of the Past, page 50.

Wonder
I have vultures on the brain. I taught a writing workshop yesterday and one of the attendees told me he first discovered my work though my poem “Clergy,” which is about turkey vultures. I’ll include the poem in the next section. Beyond being smart and social (I’ve met a few and this reputation proved true), they serve their ecosystem communities in numerous ways. I think their role as “purifiers” is particularly poetic. Vultures have specialized immunity to diseases lurking in carrion, so their simple act of feeding removes dangerous pathogens from the environment.
Whimsy
Thinking about words and vultures side-by-side, I’m reminded of how much I love the scientific name for turkey vultures. It’s Cathartes aura, which means “purifying breeze.” This is a lovely bit of found whimsy and I would like to hunt for more examples of poetic scientific names. If you know any, please share!
As promised, here’s the poem I mentioned above.
Clergy
Vultures are holy creatures. Tending the dead. Bowing low. Bared head. Whispers to cold flesh, “Your old name is not your king. I rename you ‘Everything.’”
Writing Prompt
Imagine a human filling in for the role of a plant or animal. What would you call that person’s job? How much work and technology would be needed to approximate the ecological benefits of your chosen organism? Would the human’s attempt to fill that role be possible or efficient?

Friendly reminder that if your spells, rituals, workings, what have you don't seem to be working despite using "these reagents for these correspondences," may I ask if you know why those things have their correspondences?
Sure some of the stereotypes may work out okay. Everyone knows roses symbolize love or sunflowers are joy/solar energy. But can you tell me about the red clovers, acorns, and maple leaves in your town? What energy do they hold, and what folklore or physiological propreties tell you about that energy?
There's no shame in using what's popular, but truly knowing what you're working with makes all the difference! Same goes for tools such as scissors, coffin nails, mirrors, cords, and so on.
(Also I promise I'll be doing more on my herbal compendium tag, I just have other personal projects I'm more focused on!)

I found the perfect frame for my one Saint-John’s Wort harvest of the year! It’s a great way to have protection year-round thanks to the summer solstice’s and the saint’s energies!

A. I'm pro-hex. Not hex-neutral, but actually pro.
B. With that said, like 85% of the people in my life who I would consider hexing have a tendency to bring a constant stream of misery upon themselves by being feckless and/or tarpits, so I don't feel like I really need to exert the energy to hex them. They're already taking care of it.
"Bless them to learn from their mistakes :)"
Fuck that. May they continue making the same mistakes that keep them miserable.
