Hey there, friends!
I've been working on my new series, a swashbuckling fantasy adventure called OUTLAW'S APPRENTICE, for quite a while now, and I'm VERY excited to announce that it starts (serializing) today!
I'll be releasing a new installment each Wednesday on Webtoons and on my Patreon. I hope you'll give it a try!
Chris
Quick process post: the final, colored art for a couple of panels in OUTLAW'S APPRENTICE, the original art for it, and the digital roughs I used to... I was gonna say "write it," but I think I'll say "compose" it. The dialogue, moment choice, the composition, it's all the "writing" but that term suggests that the words and overarching story are driving things, but how the image is laid on the page both affects and is affected by those words.
How much room there is in the compositional space between one character and another dictates how much dialogue either speaks and a necessary line might compositionally suggest that a character has to perform a physical movement in order to provide the space for that balloon, and that movement may well dictate how the scene plays out (climbing a wall, for instance, and thus being in a position to see over it).
Everything affects everything else (or can, if you allow it to do so), and so often the term "writing" suggests a stage that precedes roughs rather than writing THROUGH them. So "composing" might be my favorite term for it.
(I'll think on this some more and maybe write a longer essay about it on Patreon, but for now, I'm off to Lexington for the comic show! Hope to see you there)
Hey, there, friends! If you have a webtoons account, please consider subscribing! You can also follow the comic on my Patreon; paid folks will have access to each episode a week early.
The final Companions of Christmas figure: Saint Justo, the Christmas Samurai!
Candlemas (today!) is the final day of what the traditional Christmas season, and midnight's approaching! Be sure to take down any remaining decorations, because otherwise you might be visited by Saint Justo.
St Justo was a daimyô during the Sengoku era, but his adherence to Catholicism saw him banished from his beloved Japan. He went into exile, and grew terribly ill from his grief, but wanted to celebrate one last Christmas in full, so he waited until midnight after Candlemas to give up his ghost.
Now, Saint Justo, having been canonized by the Catholic Church as Blessed Justo Takayama Ukon, and having served you Candlemas Pancakes (or Crêpes, depending on where you live), will use his sword to chop up whatever decorations you haven't put away. So put 'em away!!!

Did some pencils this morning for some more LOTR figures; here's one of them (one of Saruman's uruks, which'll be the Patreon-exclusive figure for July's batch) and the reference snapshot I used to draw it. After initially drawing the spear I decided to have him holding his sword, instead.

Arming caps from the Hofjagd und Rüstkammer in Austria. These were worn to absorb the force of any impact taken by the helmets under which they were worn (they're an essential part of armoring up, but you don't see 'em in movies because you wanna see the actor's face/head when the helmet comes off).
Companions of Christmas: Derby Tup!
Many, many years ago, a butcher named Joe Funny, who plied his trade in north Derbyshire, would travel from door to door on New Years’ Eve with his wife, leading a flock of goats a’string. One year, the last goat in this doomed line was Tup.
Over the course of many New Years' celebrations, Joe the Butcher and Mrs. Funny had built quite a demand for a service that they provided: they would butcher one of the goats right at the home of the customer for the customers' New Years' feast, providing the very freshest meat one could get.
As his fellows were slaughtered one-by-one, Tup began to sweat, knowing it would be his turn before long. Finally, he was the last goat a’string, and knew that he had to act decisively if he wanted to keep from having his innards emptied in front of a crowd of cheering revelers.
“You had more custom than expected,” Tup said to the pair as they led him along. “You brought too few goats, and there are at least five more homes hosting parties who would certainly want to buy your wares. Selling out when there are still customers at hand is like throwing money in a fire!”
Joe the Butcher shrugged, and said that it couldn’t be helped. But Tup offered a solution. “You’ve more meat at your shop. Send Mrs. Funny to fetch it, along with blood, and I’ll show you how you might increase your earnings.”
So Mrs. Funny fetched the meat, and the blood, and they went to the next house. The revelers welcomed the pair and their offering enthusiastically, but when it was time to do the actual butchering, the trio put Tup’s plan into effect.
Joe the Butcher slid his knife from Tup’s throat to his belly, and Mrs. Funny caught the blood in a bowl. But Joe had used the dull, back side of the knife, and Mrs. Funny poured blood gathered from the shop. The butchering was an illusion!
Tup employed all of his (rather broad) acting talents, hurling himself from one part of the room to the other in wild, manic death throes, simultaneously spouting laments about his own demise with enthusiastic wishes that the revelers would enjoy the feast his corpse would be providing.
At least, spent, he collapsed to the floor. The couple spirited him behind a curtain, made some chopping noises, and provided the party with meat from the shop.
Then they performed the exact same scheme at the rest of the houses on their route.
This method proved far easier than butchering meat on demand outside the confines of their own shop, and so, the next year, they took their stores with them, and enacted the same sham butchery on old Tup again, at each of their customers’ homes. And again, the year after that.
It didn’t take the people of Derbyshire long to realize that the same goat was being “butchered” each time, but they so enjoyed Tup’s death scenes, which grew ever more stylized and grandiose, that they happily went along with the conceit.
Eventually, they did away with the selling of meat altogether, and now they simply go from house to house in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, and Nottinghamshire, putting on their performance throughout the Christmas season, where Tup fakes his own murder for cold, hard cash.
Companions of Christmas: ČERT AND ANDĚL
Each year, St. Nicolas gathers two of his littlest companions on December 5th: unlikely best friends Čert and Anděl, who accompany him to the Czech Republic, Slovenia, and Slovakia.
While old St. Nick (called "Mikuláš" and "Miklavž" in these countries) usually has to hunt down the mischievous Čert, Anděl can be found patiently waiting in Heaven. When the three are all together, Anděl lowers them to Earth on a golden rope.
The pair delights in each others' company, and in playing their favorite game: trying to convince St. Nick as to whether a child is naughty or nice, with each making giving examples of behavior and making arguments.
The children in these countries usually prepare a song or poem to recite when the trio visits. If they do well, Anděl rewards them with candy; if they haven't, Čert shakes and howls, reminding them that they have all year to prepare for next time to avoid his little tantrum.
Companions of Christmas: MERCURIUS ABU-SIFIN
Today (November 25) is the feast day of this Scythian-Romano soldier-saint, who wields two swords: one with which to fight evil men, the other, given to him by the Archangel Michael, with which to fight demons, evil spirits, and monsters.
Since Christmas is the time of year when evil spirits and monsters are at their most active (remember, under the old Julian calendar, Martinmas, which starts the Christmas season, was Halloween), this is when Mercurius is at his most needed, protecting kids from Perchten and Krampusse and the like.
Historically, St Nick has tamed many the holiday's monsters and wicked folks himself, turning them to good & employing them as companions for visits in the regions from which they hail, but as populations grow & his duties expand, he can't investigate every tale of an ogre or cannibal personally. So St Nick forwards such reports to Mercurius, who is his man-on-the-ground for sussing out whether these instances are just local stories, or genuine threats to kids. If the latter, Mercurius steps in and takes care of things.
Since there haven't been many instances of "new" dark companions in some time, it might be assumed that Mercurius doesn't approach the beasts and baddies who would dare to prey on the youngsters under St Nick's care with the same rehabilitative spirit as does his boss.

Companions of Christmas: OLD MAN BAYKA
Old Man Bayka celebrates Christmas in Liberia by roaming the streets in his mask, begging for charity on behalf of others in need, to whom he passes the alms along. Whereas many other holiday figures give gifts, Bayka reminds folks that GIVING is the most important part of the holiday, and makes sure that they have the opportunity to do so (and rightfully chides the wealthy when they don't take that opportunity).
Though Bayka has largely refused his friend Santa's offer of new clothes for himself, he does grudgingly accept the saint's last years' boots each year, so that his old feet can keep up with his spirit.
(each year I share drawings of Christmas figures from around the world and their stories, and each year I add a few more to the collection. So pop back by for old favorites and new friends!)
Over the moon to get to the first "training" section of my swashbuckling fantasy comic (OUTLAW'S APPRENTICE, coming next year). Marrying medieval sword stuff, the kung fu movies I grew up with, and the rural bumpkinism of my day-to-day to make something fun is a real joy.
Still in the roughs stage, but sometimes those roughs are colored.
