Workin' on a new pack of map assets wheeeee.
My last one was a set of Photoshop brushes, and I know people still use it, but I don't use Photoshop anymore -- I haven't in a long, long time. What kind of format is useful these days, I wonder? Is just a sprite sheet like this (transparent PNG, of course) sufficient? Individual transparent PNGs? 🤔

Apparently just refound, I remember this hex map from earlier OSR days (maybe pre Google+ even?) I always liked it and glad I have stumbled up on it again.
An old map I did for my first book, a sleepy harbour town, full of shippers guilds burial mounds and quaint medieval market squares.
Thinking of redoing it as a better map too to release for an independent photsical product!

I gripe about the Realms a lot so I figure I should put up or shut up every once in a while. “Build the world you want to play in” as it were. That’s one of several reasons why a fantasy atlas is probably a better way to tell the stories I want to than a traditional novel (but I’m no longer ruling a novel out).
Anyway my goal with the map was to make something that looked unique and apart from all the samey-looking hand-drawn Hobbit-style maps so prevalent in the fantasy/TTRPG genre.
It involved changing lots of found-texture/real-world snapshots (asphalt, cement, tile, paint, etc.), and stitching them together, via Photoshop into plausibly-realistic-looking physical planetary features and environments.

It irritates me when I see ads for maps drawn in "fantasy style" that look like the maps in LOTR. My poppets, my piggesnies, that isn't "fantasy style." It's J. R. R. Tolkien's style. He drew the maps whose style you are blatantly copying.
