being extremely out of the loop especially regarding social media trends and discourse means you often end up learning things only after they've been turned into memes like ten times removed from the original context. for example the first time I ever read the term "girl dinner" it was on a gif of the T-Rex from Jurassic Park eating people so you can imagine the confusion when some time later I stumbled upon posts where people were hating on it and calling it gender essentialist
I don't think this is being "out of the loop", you're really just describing being in a specific, better loop.
wait ok this is actually one that has caused some contention before when I've talked to people about it. reblog and tag whether or not you check the weather prediction every day before going out

it bothers me that you often don't really hear about people having a "favorite album" the way they might have a favorite movie or favorite video game
fuck it. reblog this and tell me in the tags what your favorite album is
How do you figure out if students used AI? Do you automatically assume AI use if a student turns in a grammatically perfect paper?
Not at all! Thereâs a lot of nuance in this issue and itâs very much ever-evolving. I take a lot of things into account when making those determinations, and itâs taken me over 2 years of grading student work and researching AI technology to feel confident in my evaluations.
The biggest thing I look at is references. I primarily GSA for upper-level psychology classes where each student is expected to write a 10 page paper with at least 10 empirical, peer-reviewed sources. The very first thing I do when grading these papers is go through every single source and make sure they exist (AI often hallucinates references that look real but are not) and they are at least tangentially related to the topic at hand. I would say around 90% of the students in my department who have been caught using AI were caught because of hallucinated sources.
Another big thing is vocabulary. AI tends to really hook onto certain words and phrases: just to name a few, I see âfoster(ed)â, âenhanceâ, âhighlightâ, âcrucialâ, âleverageâ, and âtestamentâ a lot in AI writing. This isnât to say that using these words will automatically get you flagged for AI use; itâs when theyâre overused and clearly redundant. Still, though, we canât really prove AI use in these cases unless the student confesses.
The last thing I really look at is argument depth. My students know that I like to see a lot of critical thinking in their arguments; I want to see comparing and contrasting, theoretical frameworks, and (most importantly) a clear conclusion where they make a case for their opinion. AI has a tendency to make very surface-level arguments when prompted to discuss controversial topics, and the systems often come to a very safe conclusion that typically just gives âboth sides have their strengths and weaknessesâ vibes.
All of this said, we have very limited ways to actually prove AI use and bring about disciplinary action. The main way we are able to do this is through hallucinated sources, since that is an objective telltale sign that cannot be mistaken for a studentâs personal writing style. We can also look at the HTML when assignments are submitted directly into Canvas, but this doesnât really work for document submissions. So honestly, even if we are 99% sure AI was used based on our assessments, most of the time thereâs nothing we can do beyond asking the student if they used AI (which, of course, most students will say no, and we have to just accept that).
I would like to note that I am never the one who makes the final decisions here. As a GSA, all I can do is bring forth concerns and evidence to the professor I am contracted with, and then it is on them to decide how to move forward. So please take all of this with a grain of salt â I am not an expert here, just sharing what works for me!

the ai takeover should've never happened and environmentally speaking we have to get rid of it basically now. yet, if there's anything positive to learn... i like how witnessing ai from afar, albeit with much horror, cured us art and writing perfectionists. because it shows us how it shouldn't be done (sterile, optimized, empty, copy-of-a-copy, inhumane 'content')
âWhy donât you use aiâ idk man beyond the obvious environmental and âthis machine causes psychosis and encourages people to kill themselvesâ thing I think asking the equivalent of a solid D student who is also a pathological liar if they can answer my question/do the work for me seems pretty fucking stupid
