there's something to be said about meeting a celebrity in person. i'd seen specimens of death's head hawkmoths (Acherontia atropos) before, and obviously everyone's seen photos, but a live one in the wild is a completely different experience even if, technically, this sleepy one wasn't giving any signs of life to differentiate it from a pinned one

this big winged rodent was a little over two meters above ground on a tree and took a lot of stretching to get to, made me do a cartoon double take as i walked past it and caused a couple of hikers to probably think i'd lost my mind, but it was worth it. i would've done all that and much more to meet this goth icon
