His heart drops to the pit of his stomach every time he hears it. 

Like bells chiming, he can’t believe that sound comes out of you. How could someone sound so cute when practically snorting? 

You have the sort of laugh that makes his own lips quirk in pleasure. 

He could listen to that lovely lilt on repeat, let it swirl around his head till its all he knew. 

Making you happy was rewarding in itself, but hearing the small bubbling of pleasure leave your lips left him more satisfied than he could convey. 

He’s never been particularly funny, and that’s never bothered him much. But, your laugh satiates him, and suddenly he’s cracking every jokes he’s ever heard. 

Are knock knock jokes still a thing? Well here’s one for you …

And whether its out of pity or pleasure, he doesn’t care. For you laugh. You really laugh. 

That beautiful sound. He’s beside himself he’s the one who get to see you like this. He wants to do it for the rest of his days.

It’s all laughs, it’s all smiles, and apparently that gut wrenching giggle left your mouth? 

Well that’s just not fair. A laugh like that could bring a man to his knees. 

He needs more of it. He has to hear it again. Give him a second to go through his rolodex of stories, surely something will tickle your fancy. 

It is now his personal mission to make you laugh. He’s bringing out all the stops. Anything so you’ll make that sound again. 

It works. You’re laughing. All toothy and breathless, and he’s in love. 

Finally, a purpose for all these self-depreciating jokes. Perhaps this was always his lot in life? 

Turning trauma into semi-decent jokes so he could make a cute magician laugh. There are worse fates. 

Every time you throw your head back, falling into a renewed fit of giggles, he feels a sense of pride. He made you smile. He made you laugh. 

And damn does that feel good.

Nadia’s sense of humor is more tongue-in-cheek. And, often times, were more for her own amusement than anyone else. 

So when she makes a subtle jab at the couriers’ expense she’s both surprised and delighted to see the grin that spreads to your cheeks. 

When you laugh she’s momentarily stunned. She can’t recall a time before this where she had actually heard you laugh.

I mean, you’d smiled, giggled, the lot. But this was a full-bellied, hearty laugh. And by the Gods, she loved it. 

Never before had she seen someone look so attractive while wiping the remnants tears from their eyes as they choked back fits of giggles. 

Truly, no one had a cuter laugh than this, she was certain. And knowing you were laughing because of her, even sweeter. 

She’d have to be a wise ass more often if it meant seeing you like this. 

Definitely worth it.

Portia’s laugh was pretty cute itself, so the fact that you’ve managed to out-cute her is pretty remarkable. 

Really, between the two of you it was mind-boggling. Fits of giggles and bursts of laughter were frequent.

She’d remark how charming your laugh was and you’d dote on her own, all the while flushed, chests heaving with shared amusement. 

It’s easy to get lost in Portia’s laugh, but she insists that she shares much of the same sentiment towards you. 

She’s happy, really happy, you two can be together like this and share in each other’s happiness. 

It’s her greatest pleasure in life. 

She hopes you can be like this always, happy and laughing and always basking in each other’s glow.

Don’t expect slap stick. He is not funny and he couldn’t be if he tried. 

But somehow you still seem to find pleasure in his company. Grinning and laughing as chickens chase him and when Inanna uses him as a bed. 

He’s thankful, truly thankful, that these small pleasures bring you joy and that he, in turn, has the pleasure of hearing you laugh. 

It’s beautiful and soft and reminds him of how it feels when the sun hits his face. 

He wishes he could evoke it more out of you, but when he does hear it, he reveres his luck. The sound is so calming, it’s enough for the corners of his lips to crack the softest of smiles. 

Few things in this life bring him greater happiness than hearing you laugh. Knowing you feel safe enough and comfortable around him to do so.

It makes him happy. You make him happy.

Oh that’s just sinful. 

A laugh like that makes him think so many thoughts. If you sound that good laughing just imagining other things … Oof. 

Lucio snorts when he laughs, much to his chagrin. Meanwhile you sound like a freakin symphony sent from the heavens. No fair. 

But that’s not to say he doesn’t savor the fact that he gets to hear that beautiful noise. 

Nor can he help himself but to relish in the fact that the person who elicited said noise was none other than himself. 

Let’s see, how else can he get you to laugh again? He needs more of it. Craves more of it. 

He’s one giggle away from throwing a pie in his face if it means getting you to laugh. 

Okay … maybe not a pie in his face. But people can be solicited for that sort of thing. 

Okay, I just realized something while doing Nadia route earlier. I was at the moment when The Apprentice learned that they had died three years earlier. And suddenly, this sentence.

“The strange looks people give me in my neighborhood.”

Wait. Wait wait wait wait wait. WHAT THE FUCK ?

Neighbors remember the apprentice ? I don’t know why, I always assumed that the resurection was accompanied by an erasure of memory for all those who knew the apprentice. I mean: The neighbors were surely there during the Red Plague. They must have seen the apprentice being taken to Lazaret.

So obviously, to see someone who is supposed to be DEAD walking among them as if everything was NORMAL, that does not worry anyone ? I don’t know, nobody ever went to see the apprentice and asked, “Weren’t you supposed to be, you know, dead ?" 

I mean, I see someone who is supposed to be dead, this is the first question I ask myself and I ask them. Seriously. 

…Or else it happened. And every fucking time, Asra has erased the apprentice’s memory because Hey! Side effects of your resurection, here are your headaches and your moments of catatonia ! I mean, if a lot of people know the apprentice and go to the store, I can’t even imagine the number of times he had to do it.

And just imagine the explanations. Like, at Selasi, the baker. Seriously, what are you telling him ? "Hey, if you could avoid saying anything that would suggest to the apprentice that they actually died three years ago, I would be very grateful” ? PLEASE

I mean, just the fact that people remember is super problematic. But then imagine if the apprentice has FAMILY. Family who has been warned that the apprentice is dead but who one day shows up at Vesuvia to find them alive ?

So this has blown up overnight and I can already see the witchhunt going after the “wrong” person, so I want to try and clarify what’s going on.

There are two separate conversations about two different kinds of “fanfic app”, and they are getting mixed up with each other and causing a lot of panic and anger.

Conversation 1: I posted about this yesterday off the back of @copperbadge‘s post. There is an iOS developer called Woodsign who has made a bunch of for-profit “fanfic apps”. These apps have copied people’s fics without permission and most of them are behind paywalls (even if in some cases it’s “watch this ad” or “leave a review” rather than cold hard cash). This person is profiting directly off other people’s work and it looks to me like they just downloaded the top-rated X-hundred fics in various popular fandoms and shoved them into their app. Not cool, not okay. If your fic appears on these apps, contact the developer to remove them, and report the apps to the Apple Store if you can figure out how to do that.

Conversation 2: In the process of looking up the apps above, a lot of people have suddenly become aware of an app called Fanfic Pocket, which refers to itself as an “unofficial AO3 app”. Fanfic Pocket acts as an interface for the AO3 site itself, allowing you to browse all posted fics there through the app instead of through the website. If you leave a comment or kudos or whatever on the app, it still goes through to AO3 proper. The app preserves tags and warnings and makes authorship very clear. In theory, this person isn’t stealing or plagiarising, just providing a different way to read AO3. They have monetised the app with ads and subscription options that give you in-app perks, but they aren’t keeping any content behind paywalls or asking you to pay to view certain fics like Woodsign is.

My take on the second person is that they meant well. That they are thinking of the monetisation of the app as purely paying them for their work on coding it, that they haven’t taken into account either fandom’s history with exploitation or the general sensitivities of IP law. I expect they are currently being inundated with a lot of angry posts and emails, and they’re probably legitimately confused about why it’s happening and why people are calling them a “thief”.

I’m not defending them particularly. My personal opinion is that it’s still fundamentally not cool, that they’ve been either very naive or very foolish to think it was okay, and that I strongly do not want my fiction appearing alongside advertising content. (This is also why I’ve turned down several requests to post translations of my stories on ficbook.net - there are ads on all the stories and I am not okay with that.) It’s reasonable in theory to want to be paid for your work on an app like this, but when it gets tangled up with other people’s creative content - and not just that, but fanfic, which is already a tangle of multiple people’s creative content! - I wouldn’t touch the idea with a barge pole.

If I’d found out about this app before it blew up, I would have contacted the developer with my concerns and strongly urged that they at very least make sure people can opt out (which I would then have done with my fic). As it is, I don’t think attempting to have that conversation with them right now is going to go anywhere.
