Prompt: The first time a fiercely loyal character has a disloyal thought.
She was everything to him. His sun: he rose with her every morning. His moon: he breathed her air every night. His conscience: if she told him to leave the situation, he obeyed. His joy: he would run a thousand miles on just the thought of her laugh.
Once she invited him in, rescued him, really, he fell hook, line, and sinker. His trust was built on countless days, as far back in his memory as he could reach, of quiet, consistent love from her. Her missteps, if they happened, were borne entirely of sickness or grief, and she repented as soon as she realized what she had done.
He always forgave her, who wouldn't if they had sat with her through hours of silent weeping? It was not her fault, and she was always kind in the end.
Nothing she could do or say was wrong.
So why was he questioning her now?
Was it weakness in the face of great temptation? He had faced temptation before, felt the sinful tug and wheedle, but it was nothing compared to Her.
Was...she wrong? She had been confusing at times in the past, but he could always smell it on her: a great sincerity and wisdom that he trusted absolutely.
Who would it truly hurt? She had abundance, she WAS abundance, she never failed to give in all their history together. It would cost her nothing. (Except her trust in him.)
She had said no. Clearly. Explicitly.
She could not mean it forever, surely.
If she said no, maybe it meant "no, not right now". That would make sense. She had said and meant that often enough before.
And she was not here. It had been forever, forever and a day. It was not disloyalty to ignore an instruction given an uncountable amount of time ago. It could not be.
He still believed in her, heart and soul, and that belief upheld his actions, for he believed she would still be kind, even through a misunderstanding, if such a moment of decision and rational thinking was misconstrued as disloyalty.
So he moved forward, and took hold of his destiny.
