Did you really think that this couldn't happen? That just 'cause we're out there taking care of all of them that we'd get some kind of karmic immunity to protect us from what's coming for us all?

🗡️ PlayStation Reveals God of War LAUFEY with Stunning Gameplay Footage and Epic Cutscenes ✨
what it feels like seeing men be upset they can’t play a man in the new god of war game
What are your thoughts on about Anthy? I’d love to hear them in more detail
Oh god, where do I begin. I should preface this by saying I've only watched the series once, so my understanding of Anthy's character is probably less developed than it could be!
I am currently working on a post where I read Anthy as commentary on ornamentalism and Asian inscrutability. Ornamentalism was coined by Anne Anlin Cheng to talk about the specific ways Asia itself, goods imported from Asia, and the bodies of Asian women, continually blur the lines between personhood and thingness. Where Asian bodies are reduced to objects, porcelain bowls are personified as delicate and feminine. This is the lens through which most of the cast views Anthy.
- Ornamentalism: A Feminist Theory For The Yellow Woman, p15, Anne Anling Cheng
Asian inscrutability, on the other hand, is a much more complicated term to define. Asian inscrutability has historically been used to prop up the Occident as uniquely enlightened mastery over the Orient. The Occident renders Asia knowable through surveillance, study, and categorization. While the narrative of an exotic, wild, and unknowable Asia is rooted deeply in orientalism, the term is being reclaimed by some queer Asian scholars. Anthy is deliberately playing up the idea that the Engaged is uniquely capable of understanding her as a means of manipulation. If to be known is to be controlled, to be unknown is freedom. I believe Anthy is such an inscrutable character precisely because it is her only means of resisting the extended cast's, and by extension the audience's, gaze. This is why the Adolescence of Utena movie ends with Anthy and Utena escaping the narrative. We can no longer perceive or control her.

I have many more thoughts about how this intersects with Anthy's brownness, since her body being forever pierced by a million swords says a lot about how ppl view black and brown pain as less than, but this post is getting long enough LMAO Anthy is a deeply interesting character to me because of how her Rose Bride persona plays with so many stereotypes about brown Asian women. I don't think the series is perfect- the curry episode paints India as a exotic, wild, and untameable place, for example. Leaving Akio and Anthy as ambiguously brown also robs them of any national, ethnic, or historical specificity, but I can forgive the series for it's imperfections. Overall Anthy has my entire heart. There are no perfect victims in Utena, but she means a lot to me specifically as a survivor of rape, domestic violence, and child abuse. She found the strength to walk away and this is more powerful than any magic she could ever wield.
I'm rewatching utena and I noticed one thing in episode 9. While Utena and Saionji are arguing towards the beginning of the episode, Saionji saying that next time they duel he will beat her and win Anthy back, Chu-chu is seen fighting with a frog. Now, Chu-chu is supposed to be a monkey I believe, though due to his size one could argue he looks a tiny bit like a mouse. And this is important because of an epic that was written, supposedly, as a parody of the Iliad during the classical period. This parody, the Batrachomyomachia, is the tale of a one-day war between mice and frogs, and the term is used nowadays to refer to "a useless, trivial fight". And what's more trivial, useless, hopeless, than fighting for the Rose Bride? What fight is more devoid of consequence and meaning, than one that exists within a cycle of abuse in which everyone, whether loser or winner, is harmed?

I keep seeing people lamenting that Maul and Devon's master/apprentice relationship is flimsy and toxic, like that's "bad writing" and not... the whole point? You might just want a different kinda food from what these writers are cooking.
Dysfunctional and doomed relationships are generally ill-conceived, weak, and full of red flags, right at the beginning. To be well written, we just have to buy that the characters get stuck together anyway, wherein something more significant is given means to grow.
So I ask this: Do we really think Devon would just give Maul the bird and run off to go fend for herself? After three deadly hunters killed her master, nearly killed her, and will continue to hunt her? Cause I don't.
It should be really obvious Devon still doesn't like Maul, or agree with his principles. His coercion and manipulation is obvious to her, too. But as much as he wants to use her, she intends to use him back -- For safety, and for power/revenge. This is the crux of their dysfunction.
Devon will inevitably receive guidance, wisdom, and care from a twisted replacement father figure, and Maul will think this relationship is good for them both... but he won't be good enough to fully stop the cycle of abuse he comes from. The dark side will remain a path to failure.
Season 1 was a solid explanation for how this bad situation gets going. Season 2 onwards will likely explore the slippery slope Devon thinks she can balance on top of without losing herself (not that she has other great options), alongside Maul grappling with... everything.
These two do need companionship, but this situation aint it, so it's going to sting when glimmers of good flash amidst the muck. This story is going to end as tragic as it just began. If you don't like dysfunction, angst, doomed narratives, and some self reflection for dessert... I think you're watching the wrong show.
