the thing about padmƩ going looking for anakin on mustafar is that you would literally do the same thing too if it was someone you loved
The dogfight sequence was extremely hard to cut and edit. We had storyboards that we had taken from old movies and we used the black and white footage of old World War II movies intercut with pilots talking and stuff, so you could edit the whole sequence in real time. My wife, Marcia, can normally cut a whole reel ā all ten minutes of the film ā in one week. I think it took her eight weeks to cut that battle. It was extremely complex and we had 40,000 feet of dialogue footage of pilots saying this and that. And she had to cull through all that, and put in all the fighting as well.

in life marcia denied claims saying she was āthe heartā of star wars and as always thereās no nuance online, but sheās more than earned the right to be remembered as an important collaborator
rest in peace marcia lucas </3, seen here with her oscar for editing the first star wars. her contributions to the film include putting the iconic trench run together and killing obi-wan kenobi. she was referred to as george lucasā āsecret weapon.ā she also worked with martin scorsese. you can learn more about her here, here and in dale pollackās skywalking
sometimes the attempt to correct marciaās erasure gets a little wrongfooted, like ignoring there were other editors working on star wars. but it remains true that she was a big part of the creative process, and she was overlooked for years because of her gender
The Death Star trench run was originally scripted entirely different, with Luke having two runs at the exhaust port; Marcia had re-ordered the shots almost from the ground up, trying to build tension lacking in the original scripted sequence, which was why this one was the most complicated (Deleted MagicĀ has a faithful reproduction of the original assembly, which is surprisingly unsatisfying).Ā She warned George, "If the audience doesn't cheer when Han Solo comes in at the last second in the Millennium Falcon to help Luke when he's being chased by Darth Vader, theĀ picture doesn't work."Ā
"In Tribute to Marcia Griffin", MichaelĀ Kaminski
[Marcia Lucas] was a stunning editor...Maybe the best editor I've ever known, in many ways. She'd come in and look at the films we'd made--likeĀ The Wind and the Lion, for instance--and she'd say, 'Take this scene and move it over here,' and it worked. And it did what I wanted the film to do, and I would have never thought of it. And she did that to everybody's films: to George's, to Steven [Spielberg]'s, to mine, and Scorsese in particular.
Filmmaker John Milius, on Marcia Lucas
I know for a fact that Marcia Lucas was responsible for convincing him to keep that little ākiss for luckā before Carrie [Fisher] and I swing across the chasm in the first film: āOh, I donāt like it, people laugh in the previews,ā and she said, āGeorge, theyāre laughing because itās so sweet and unexpectedāāand her influence was such that if she wanted to keep it, it was in. When the little mouse robot comes up when Harrison and I are delivering Chewbacca to the prison and he roars at it and it screams, sort of, and runs away, George wanted to cut that and Marcia insisted that he keep it. She was really the warmth and the heart of those films, a good person he could talk to, bounce ideas off of, who would tell him when he was wrong.Ā
Mark Hamill on Marcia Lucas' impact on the original "Star Wars" film, 2005, in conversation with critic Walter Chaw
