canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana

a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.

an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.

fanon is the general fandom’s accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.

Kara is born and lives “on” Krypton in Argo City, which always floated; its shields just get upgraded later. (Concept first introduced: Superman/Batman #19. 13 year old Kara appears in Action comic #1079 when Kal time travels back to Krypton. Also referenced in New History of DC, Supergirl: Universe End, and the Summer of Supergirl special)

Kara survives the destruction of Krypton with the rest of Argo City. She is sent away when her father is unsure he can guarantee her safety (born on argo story: Action comics#252, og born on krypton and survived on argo combo origin: Action Comics #869, current canon: Woman of Tomorrow #6, referenced Batman/Superman:World’s Finest #6, Supergirl:Universe’s End, and Supergirl (2026)#6, 11-15) Brainiac returns for Argo City shortly after her escape capturing a dying or reviving a dead Zor-El for using his technology. Somethings that were originally pre-death that I cannot definitively say when they happened because dc wants her to have died at 18, but canonically have happened at some point.

Meets Comet the Superhorse (Significant character WoT 6-8, referenced in Supergirl:Universe End, Supergirl (2025)#6) I assume this is pre-death. His story needs changed and tweaked, but I get why DC doesn’t touch it. Granted if they can put him on a cover for a gag they can make retcons so it is age appropriate and less just weird.

Stanhope College (referenced Summer of Supergirl Special) Kara’s first college located 50 miles from metropolis, which could be fudged to midvale and keeping her age condensed. Kara graduates highschool early stays on campus in midvale since she is a minor and gets an associates. Takes maybe a year with AP credit. Her unknown degree is probably what gets her job at a news station.

Moves to San Fran and works at News Station (Referenced Supergirl (2026) #1 and the Summer of Supergirl Special.) This either happened later in the timeline or was the last jobs Kara remembered discussing with high school friends pre-death so that is why she brought it up. I would just have written it off as a summer internship.

Moving to New York to Working on Secret Hearts-(Referenced Supergirl (2026) #1 and the Summer of Supergirl Special.) This either happened later in the timeline or was one of the last jobs Kara remembered discussing with highschool friends pre-death so that is why she brought it up. Moving to Florida to be a Student Advisor (referenced the Summer of Supergirl Special) honestly, this is the one hardest to work in with the retconning her back to 18 and her only being ~22 now and dc seemingly wanting to avoid deaging. Honestly, this should have been the run to rework and retcon into modern stories if DC is suddenly afraid of deaging not the silver age that gets reprinted regularly. I don’t think they will ever reprint these amazing stories. Quite sad.

Like. Looking at the major sidekick-bearing franchises in DC:

Donna died, but she was an adult when that happened.

Bart was an adult when he died.

Roy died and Connor was shot in the head and left in a coma for years, but they were both adults, and Connor was never a kid sidekick. Lian died as a child, but she wasn't a sidekick. I don't think you can count Roy's addiction as something that happened specifically because Ollie brought him into dangerous situations to fight crime.

Kara and Kon have both died, but neither were ever really kid sidekicks, and Kara was an adult. Kon is the closest I can think of to a non-Bat kid sidekick who died while still underage, but that wasn't because Superman brought him into the field. Superman didn't bring him into the field at all.

I guess technically maybe Tula? But she died during COIE and so did literally all but one universe, so again, not really something that happened because Aquaman endangered her (a thing he did not do). Garth also died (maybe twice; thanks, continuity errors!), but he was an adult. Koryak maybe died but also maybe was an adult, and definitely was never Arthur's sidekick.

Sandy the Golden Boy did suffer a horrific fate because of being Sandman's sidekick, I'll give you that one.

I don't think you can count Eddie because Blue Devil specifically refused to allow him to be a sidekick because it was too dangerous, and they were distinctly estranged when Eddie died.

Plenty of young heroes have died in the DCU, temporarily or permanently (Dove, Kole, Risk, Pantha, Golden Eagle, Jericho, it's a much longer list but you get the point), but none of them were sidekicks.

But then you get to Batman and he's got 2.5 dead Robins out of 5, which is...not great odds. (I'm counting Steph as the .5 because he absolutely 1000% got her killed but then she got retconned to surviving it.)

Obviously I'm not advocating for child soldiers IRL, but I'm also not advocating for vigilantism IRL. But in terms of "I found this child, and had them do cartwheels in front of men with guns," it does seem like being a child sidekick is...basically fine, most of the time? There seems to be a higher safety rate than if you are an unattached teen hero, which actually kind of checks out.
