I don’t think we ought to normalize or justify bullying as a means to keep people from being annoying — a sentiment that in and of itself could make for a whole article’s worth of conversation — but I do think we should make a habit of politely but directly telling people “hey I didn’t like that”, “that wasn’t funny”, “you are mistaken”, and the like if it’s called for, and more importantly, you should be able to take a “that wasn’t funny” for instance without taking it personally, because protecting a polite harmony where no one can criticize each other, not even politely, is also really, really bad.
Me: i support the fetishistic nature of this content but NOT the mischaracterization
sorry about all the mean things i said when i was right
SIMPLE GUIDE:
Body Horror: Things that cannot happen in real life. EX: The Thing, stomach mouths, eyes on hands, etc
Gore: Fresh injuries, often severe. EX: Severed leg, gutspill, deep gashes, etc
NEITHER: Healed injuries and burns, congenital differences, missing appendages, etc. If I could theoretically go to the store and see that character browsing the isles- It isn't body horror or gore. That's just a person. *AND the amount of people that tag, not just fictional characters, but real human beings as body horror is staggering. Its not solely a fandom issue, ableism and bigotry against anyone that looks sufficiently "different" is prevalent in real life and has devastating consequences.
(Modified) from my comment left on this post.
Body Horror is a genre of horror! It includes things like transforming the flesh into inorganic material, mutating the flesh, making a body into impossible shapes. Fungus, aliens, science experiments, transhumanism, organic machinery... That is Body Horror!
It is not "any scary or stressful thing that can happen to or around a body." That doesn't mean you can't write about those things from a horror perspective. It just means you're tagging content incorrectly. It's a genre signifier. It's like if the werewolf tag suddenly had a bunch of a average dogs, or people on their period.
There are a great many of us who use that genre to try and find types of horror in that genre and it's gotten really difficult when people tag things like having a baby or losing a limb or having cancer as "body horror"!
#pregnancy is also not body horror #that doesn't mean you can't write it as horror or tag it as horror #it's not BODY HORROR (tags by above)
You're right and you should fucking say it.

The fire inside Ace McShane had been kindling for a long time. Her classmates added fuel to the flame, as did her teachers, neighbors, and her mother. Her mother more than all of them combined, really, but even she could only stoke the flame to a low, steady smolder.
Of all the people, why did it have to be Manisha who was the catalyst? Why did it have to be her body, charred and melted, that Ace screamed herself hoarse over, that she wept her eyes bone-dry over, that finally stoked the fire too large and too hot to be contained in mere metaphor any longer?
(Because, the Doctor explained to her gently, many years later, no one else could have done it. No lesser emotion could have called the Torturing Flame into her life. Only Manisha could have been that person for Ace.)
She built bombs, explosives, played with chemicals and matches and things that should've killed her a thousand times over, and she never got hurt, not seriously. If the nitro and phosphorus and fluoride ever splashed on her, she never noticed. And whatever weapons of mass destruction she built, she used to wreak havoc on her tormentors, on Manisha's killers, and on that awful old house Gabriel Chase.
(Wretched place. Ace felt something profoundly wrong when she walked in there, something watching, something that was opposed to everything that lived on Earth. She lit her fuses and left in a hurry.)
Some gang snooped around, tried to talk her into joining, the Lightless Flame or something like. She was interested at first, but then they started talking about targeting people who didn't have anything, people who were already struggling. Recent immigrants. She punched the leader in the face and only flinched a little when the woman's whole head caved in and dripped molten wax onto the floor. She told them never to set foot on her turf again. They laughed her off and walked away, but they never did come back.
Then came the first explosion that backfired on her -- not burning, though, it just blew her back across the room and out the window and she felt the bottom her stomach drop out as the world fell away to inky black and distant streaks of light and vertigo...
and then she was on Iceworld.
(It was strange, really; Kane was as Desolation as she was, just from the opposite temperature extreme. The Professor, as a Weaver, was apparently her natural enemy. Really, she should've sided with Kane against the Doctor, according to whatever laws govern fear monsters. But Ace had never been one for following rules, and her rage at fascists overwhelmed whatever connection she might've had with that toerag.)
So that left her with the Professor, traveling in his blue box that might've been bigger on the inside, not that you could tell for all the cobwebs clogging the corridors. He fed on his plots and schemes for toppling dictators and defeating monsters, she fed on the delicious loss and pain that those dictators and monsters felt when their empires collapsed, their dreams of conquest burning around them. And oh, how they ran, burning patterns across space and time...
A lot of people are ragging on the 'cable diverted to avoid Dobby's grave after Harry Potter fans raise a stink' thing and while I also love ragging on Harry Potter fans being weird, in this case it looks like the story was completely made up.
tl;dr: There's no evidence the interview that this was mentioned in even exists, no evidence the route of the cable has ever changed, and the whole story seems to originate from one dude's podcast.
The story also broke into mainstream via the Daily Mail, who are ... rarely if ever honest or accurate.
Some useful replies to that comment and the link to the BBC article here (the interview that OOP couldn't find):
A 125-mile long cable could be installed from Pembrokeshire to Ireland to share energy.
Thought it was worth looking into because I first read about in a Guardian article, and they're typically good at fact-checking and retractions iirc.

ok not to be that guy but like. labor rights and working class rights can coexist with 24h services and late amenities. its certainly hard to do so without worker exploitation in this political and social environment, it’s not a conflict likely to resolve overnight. but 24h services are important and especially valuable to those of us that are disabled or are on a different circadian rhythm. in fact more professional, health, and government services should be available or at least possible to work on asynchronously (if applicable) during late or odd hours, while workers also get sufficient pay for their labor and proper consistent scheduling. this would be much easier on the workers with night schedules if the entire professional world didn’t grind to a halt at 5pmEST
I currently work 7:30 am to ???? (Latest I've been is 6:30pm at this point). I don't have a weekday off at the moment. Do you know how much I would love being able to set a doctor's appointment at 7pm? It would be life changing. Doctors outside of the ER being available to me would be lovely. Not having to take a day off to have an appointment would be wonderful. Give me asynchronous workers yesterday please.
locusts are SO fucked up. imagine if your apartment complex got too crowded during a drought so everyone in it started overproducing serotonin until they gained 100lb of pure muscle and then chewed through the drywall of every building in the neighborhood
they do this over in philly
there’s a t-shirt that says “I survived a bad day and all I got was the rest of my life” and yeah I still think about it
everyone make sure you have some fucked up thoughts today ok

for the lovely lovely deafies out there who want to get involved in direct action you absolutely 100% cannot ever bring a hearing aid or cochlear implant with bluetooth to any direct action. bluetooth devices all carry a unique signal that can be used to identify you if it's picked up at a direct action. go with a [more] hearing buddy and communicate in sign language. if you don't mutually know a sign language then come up with gestures. do not risk your freedom because you want to have your hearing aid/cochlear implant at the action. it's not worth it.
flock cameras are also now tracking bluetooth device signatures when you pass them. if you drive past a flock camera with your bluetooth-enabled hearing aid or cochlear implant, the flock camera knows you passed through
Wait I just realized this is gonna apply to all cgms and most if not all insulin pumps. They’re all Bluetooth devices, it’s essential to how they work
I did not think it possible, but I have just developed even more hatred, derision, and contempt for the perpetual surveillance state.
Watching shows from the 70s will have you saying things like "that guy looks like he would play a white ninja" and then you go to his IMDb page and find multiple instances of him playing a white ninja
