Befriending Kenma first by chance like in the manga after just moving to the city. Hinata bouncing about wanting Kenma to set for him after finding out that Kenma is a setter for his team. After Kenma gives in to Hinata, Kuroo catches them and can’t help but grin knowing that this would be good for Kenma. It could be good for their team. He was right.

Hinata practicing receives with Yaku and keeping Lev motivated by being competitive towards him. 

Kenma actively taking part on how to help Hinata to improve by watching Hinata instead of playing his game. Trying to find the best approach on how to help him.

Kuroo finding out from Kenma that this is Hinata’s first real team and what he went through to get where he is today. He always make sure to make a point that he glad Hinata is there on his team, playing them, and that it wouldn’t be the same without him.

Akaashi finding out that Hinata is super insecure about not being as good as the rest of his team. Everyone seems to be even more helpful with pointers from then on. 

Akaashi staying back with Hinata when he find out that he’s been practicing extra after practices to make sure he doesn’t over work himself. Bokuto adding himself in the mix. “hey hey hey. your captain is here to help.” (he just makes things much more hectic for Akaashi)

Yukie and Kaori (managers) fawning over him and flustered child (once again). And do some of those boys want to be jealous? Yes, but can’t because it’s just too cute to see Hinata try to deny praises from them. 

One time another team was jealous of mangers doting on Hinata. The girls catching the glares towards him. The team found out that their girls are scarier than any of the boys on their team.. combined.

Kenma jealous of Hinata practicing with Akaashi and gushing about how he likes a certain toss from him. Kenma offering to toss for him a few extra times and being tackled to the floor while the team looks on snickering. 

Sleep over!! Bokuto and Kuroo doing Hinata’s hair like their own. Akaashi washing all of the gel out and Kenma brushing his hair as they watch movies. 

The other team stealing Hinata aka picking him up and just dashing out of the gym. Bribing him to stay with meat buns. 

Trying to make sure Hinata does school work and study. “Listen to your captain test are important. You have to study.” “Should you take your own advice Bokuto? Didn’t you just failed your test.” “Akaashi!”

“Listen here shrimpy now to solve this problem to you need to”- a big long and hard explanation that Hinata and half the watching team zones out while Yaku snickers. 

Other teams trying to intimidate Hinata. Protective teams activated. 

Either team trying their best to convince Hinata that yes he can be the little giant of Tokyo.

Karasuno vs tokyo!hinata. Praising him that he reminds them of the little giant. His team can’t help but glare because their sunshine wouldn’t leave their school just to be like the little giant. (Just in case, they keep one member with Hinata at all times when they play against Karasuno.)

Someone having to bring a loud and crying child that they’re babysitting to practice. Older brother Hinata to the rescue. The child is quiet and happy. Everyone is in awe. 

After a week break of no volleyball club, Hinata returns with an undercut. It suits him well. A little too well that a few have taken a hit to the face. “Hey. is that a piercing on his ear too?” Doomed teammates.

We live in a pretty great digital age and we have access to a ton of amazing tools that artists in past generations couldn’t even dream of, but a lot of people look at a cool trick and only learn half of the process of using it.

Here’s the missing part of this tutorial:

How do you populate your backgrounds?

Well, here’s the answer:

If the focus is the environment, you must show a person in relation to that environment.

The examples above are great because they show how to use the software itself, but each one just kind of “plops” the character in front of their finished product with no regard of the person’s relation to their environment.

How do you fix this?

Well, here’s the simplest solution:

This is a popular trick used by professional storyboard and comic artists alike when they’re quickly planning compositions. It’s simple and it requires you to do some planning before you sit down to crank out that polished, final version of your work, but it will be the difference between a background and an environment.

Even if your draftsmanship isn’t that great (like mine), people can be more immersed in the story you tell if you just make it feel like there is a world that exists completely separate from the one in which they currently reside – not just making a backdrop the characters stand in front of.

I’m a 3d artist and have been exploring the possibilities of using 3d as reference for 2d poses. I want to add a couple of tips and things!

Sketchup is very useful for environment references, and I assume it’s reasonably easy to learn. If you’re interested in going above and beyond, I highly recommend learning a proper 3d modeling program to help with art, especially because you can very easily populate a scene or location with characters!

Using 3ds Max I can pretty quickly construct an environment for reference. But going beyond that, I can also pose a pretty simple ‘CAT’ armature (known in 3d as a rig) straight into the scene, which can be totally customized, from various limbs, tails, wings, whatever, to proportions, and also can be modeled onto and expanded upon (for an example, you could 3d sculpt a head reference for your character and then attach it to the CAT rig, so you have a reference for complex face angles!)

The armature can also be posed incredibly easily. I know programs exist for stuff like this - Manga Studio, Design Doll - but posing characters in these programs is always an exercise in frustration and very fiddly imo. A simple 3d rig is impossibly easy to pose.

By creating an environment and dropping my character rig into it, I have an excellent point of reference when it comes to drawing the scene!

Not only that, but I can also view the scene from whatever angle I could ever want or need, including the character and their pose/position relative to the environment.

We can even quickly and easily expand this scene to include more characters!
