Autism actually can make people violent and aggressive, and I’m tired of “autism advocates” saying it can’t. Many autistic people, especially higher support needs people lose control of their bodies during meltdowns and times of high emotion. Some autistics have limited control of their bodies at all times. This body brain disconnect is a prevalent associative feature of autism. This is not to say that measures shouldn’t be taken to protect and teach the autistic person and others, but you can’t erase real, but stigmatized parts of a condition, and then dare to call yourself an advocate. Just because a symptom is unpleasant or unpalatable doesn’t mean it’s not a genuine part of the disorder. Stop ‘cleansing’ your autism advocacy.

[Mutual Aid Request] Okanagan is burning

The Bradley Creek wildfire started on July 31 and since last Saturday the wind has picked up the fires, spreading it even more aggressively.

So far, according to Chief Dan Wilson of the Okanagan Indian Band in British Columbia, 230 homes have been confirmed to be lost to the fire. Evacuation orders and a Do Not Consume Water Advisory have been issued.

The fire is still spreading, Chief Wilson fears that at least 30 band members and up to 200 non-band members have lost their homes. If you are affected by the fires, please register with Emergency Support Services here to access basic supports like accommodation, food, and clothing.

For readers who are not affected by the fires in British Columbia, I implore you to help with your donation.

The First Nations’ Emergency Services Society (FNESS) of British Columbia helps train firefighters and emergency responders for First Nations communities across British Columbia. Please donate to their Emergency Preparedness & Capacity Fund here. FNESS also provides emergency kits that includes safe drinking water for those displaced by wildfires. Donate to their 72-hour Emergency Kit Fund here.

The North Okanagan Friendship Center Society (NOFCS) is open for families and Elders impacted by the fire. The center is providing food and temporary respite from smoke. Please donate to the NOFCS to help their operations stay open during this state of emergency.
