Midsummer in Ireland
The Summer Solstice is coming up soon so hereâs some Irish traditions regarding this holiday!  In Ireland this holiday is known as Midsummer or Midsummerâs night. It was also known as St. Johnâs Eve to Christians or sometimes Bonfire Night. (Litha is the Wiccan name for this holiday but that name isnât used in irish tradition) This holiday marks the longest day of the year, the height of the sunâs strength and the middle of summer on the Celtic calendarAs gaeilge (In irish): Solstice = Grianstad âHappy Solstice to youâ = âGrianstad sona duitâ Pronounced: Gree-an-stad hunna ditch Summer Solstice = Grianstad an tsamhraidh Traditions: Bonfires were lit just after sundown to celebrate the occasion. Usually every home would have a bonfire lit outside, but larger bonfires were lit on the hills where people would gather. People would also bless their crops with homemade torches by getting a bag that they dip in oil and tie it to a seasoned piece of fir. The young people walk from one cultivated field to another and  make the sign of the cross on each field hoping that God would bless their crops. One would think that it was the fairies that were moving about through the fields at times. When the crops are blessed they return to their own bonfire. The family sit in a circle around the fire and there are cheers, feasting and celebrations. After a while the fires die out and the young people go to the large fire on the neighbouring hillside. They dance and sing around the fire. Sometimes they go from one bonfire to another, and they play their music along the way. When the embers are dying out they jump over it to have luck for the year. Then they bring a cow and make her jump it to have an increase in her milk in the future. They then return home at break of day. https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428287/4391915 https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428287/4391916 https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4428287/4391917 https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4921989/4915790/4945870 Superstitions: If the weather is good up to midsummer they believe that the weather will now change and that a bad harvest will follow. If it had been bad weather up until Midsummer the people will wait anxiously for a change at midsummer because they think they will then have a good, dry, harvest. Food: Goody was sometimes made at Midsummer, it was a pudding made with bread, milk, sugar and spices. Hereâs a recipe: https://www.thegraciouspantry.com/clean-eating-irishâŚ/ https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes/4649684/4646590 Irish pagan deities who are associated with Midsummer are: Ăine, Goddess of summer, wealth and sovereignty. She is associated with midsummer and the sun, and is sometimes represented by a red mare. Ăine is strongly associated with County Limerick. The hill of Knockainey (Irish: Cnoc Ăine) is named after her and was site of rites in her honour, involving fire and the blessing of the land, usually at Midsummer.  Due to Ăineâs connection with midsummer rites, it is possible that Ăine and Grian (Her sister) may share a dual-goddess, seasonal function with the two sisters representing the âtwo sunsâ of the year: Ăine representing the light half of the year and the bright summer sun (an ghrian mhĂłr), and Grian the dark half of the year and the pale winter sun (an ghrian bheag). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%81ine ManannĂĄn mac Lir (âson of the seaâ) is a warrior and king of the Otherworld in Irish mythology who is associated with the sea and often interpreted as a sea god. Although also an Irish deity, in Manx folklore he was said to be the first ruler of Isle of Man (and so was named after him) and he protected the land by keeping it covered in a veil of mist. To thank ManannĂĄn for this protection, the people of the island would âPay the rentsâ to him at Midsummer every year to throwing bundles of green rushes into the sea. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manann%C3%A1n_mac_Lir You can also honor any deities associated with summer during this time such as Brigid, The Dagda, Lugh etcThanks for reading!

Nate, you keep mentioning your glitter drink/glitter tea and it sounds really cool! Do you have a recipe? I googled but had no luck.
Yeah, definitely!
So the fun blue color in the drink we made yesterday comes from butterfly pea flowers, which are a somewhat popular tea ingredient in part because they make a drink that is naturally deep/vibrant blue (which is obviously a bit unusual for tea)! The other fun thing is that itâs a PhD indicator, so if you add lemon juice or other citrus to it itâll turn pink/purple/magenta depending on the amount. Iâve heard that borage does the exact same thing but havenât tried it yet myself even though we grew some borage in the garden last year.
The glitter is actually the even easier part -- itâs edible luster dust! You can order it online if you want fancier glitter or more variety of colors but tbh, I have seen the stuff for sale in the cake decorating area of JOANN, so itâs not hard to come by. It is, however, extremely magical in beverages. I have used it to make little prop âhealing potionâ bottles to wear on my belt whenever I do D&D cosplay, because when the glitter swirls around it has the coolest effect. Iâve found gold luster dust tends to have the best effect, but Iâve also bought the silver stuff and gotten pretty good results, too. I havenât experimented as much with other colors but I wouldnât be surprised if they all look pretty cool. Luster dust is powerful!
As a final note: we didnât do it this time, but one of my favorite things to add to butterfly pea flower tea is dried licorice root, which tastes amazing and doesnât change the color at all since itâs pretty neutral itself. So if you get your hands on some and want to fancy it up, thatâs my recommended additive.
Go forth and have glittery drinks!
Hello! Glitter drinks are VERY powerful and I recommend them wholeheartedly! A couple more tips on using luster dusts:
They only really work in transparent beverages; if you want to glitter up a hot chocolate (which: donât we all?) you can use larger pieces of decorative glitter that float, like the hearts and stars that Joanns & Michaels sell. These will dissolve after a few minutes, so add them right before serving. If you put whipped cream on your drinks, you can go wild with sprinkles and sanding sugar and other sparkly things, although that takes them a little further from the âmagic potionâ category
In general, gold luster dust is best in drinks with warm colors. It looks FANTASTIC in cranberry juice, hibiscus tea, or other deep red beverages. But if you put deep gold luster dust in something with a cool color palette, like butterfly pea tea, it can have odd effects. Thereâs a vial of luster dust we have thatâs a sort of pale âwhite goldâ color thatâs more neutral and thus works in most things, but if you get a very yellow gold youâll want a more silvery color if youâre going to make green or blue drinks.
You will be surprised at how little glitter you need! Start with a tiny sprinkling (especially if youâre glittering individual cups) and go from there. I like a very glittery beverage but even I have put too much in and had a little cake of glitter at the bottom of my cup when I was done
If you make glitter drinks in unglazed ceramic mugs they will be glittery forever. I think this is a bonus, but itâs probably something you should be aware of.
Happy potion-making! Make Mabel Pines proud!

Fog in Witchcraft
Fog is often a forgotten aspect of weather that seems to get passed over when it comes to witchcraft despite it having some powerful and noble uses as well as a history in the craft. Though not all areas get fog commonly, many do, almost every morning depending on the time of year. Allow this small post to perhaps be some help to those who have interest in harnessing fog into their craft.
History and Fiction
As stated above, in many literary sources witches of both historical senses and fiction harness fog as a powerful towel. In popular lore, witches were said to summon fogs to roll across the lands to protect fleeing mothers and children during wars to hide from invading soldiers, though this lore is hard to pin point down, it is often said to come from Celtic and Gaelic origins.
In other tales witches would summon fog to protect traveling royalty or heroes who are on a quest to reach lands that may be unfriendly to their arrival. At some other times fog was related to almost like the âwitching hourâ it meant it was a time that the supernatural were out and witches were casting their spells.
Fog as a Liminal Space
What is a liminal space? To put it simply it means a âtransforming spaceâ or a place that the Veil or energies are thinner and overcross one another. Often they are associated with spirit work, energy work, astral work and over all witchcraft. Some call these places or areas âplaces where one area and time stop and another beginsâ.
In many cases, places that are covered by fog often are said to be liminal spaces during this time, due to the surrealism and energy fog brings with it. It turns something mundane looking to mysterious, confusing and even to some creepy. Its concealing nature brings the feeling of the unknown and the unseen.
Traditionally and theatrically fog is often used to represent the Veil between worlds and afterlife, often used in settings of literature and movies by covering graveyards before something supernatural happens or by filling the streets at night when magick is about to begin. Often when many people who donât practice the craft think of supernatural energies and the Veil they imagine a foggy night or a wall of fog, this imagery is for a reason.
Often, fog is seen as an important tool for spirit work both fictionally and modernly due to its relations of being a liminal space and therefore seen as easier to contact spirits with the barriers weaker when it arrives.
Correpsondences and Uses of Fog
Generally Fog Corresponds with - The Veil, Spirits/Spirit Work, The Hidden, The Unseen, Invisibility, Protection, Obstruction, Curses/Hexes, Warding, Meditation, Astral Work, Fear, Patience, Calmness, Serenity, Peace and Travel
Often times, fog is useful to one when they wish to cast or enchant items for invisibility and protection during travel, often necklaces or items enchanted while out in the fog. Others will take the opportunity of using fog for spiritual communication, past life work and astral projection, taking advantage of the weakened barriers and Veil for these purposes.
Associations
Crystals - Clear Quartz, Smokey Quartz, Thunder Egg
Herbs/Plants - Cotton, Broom, Saffron, Thistle/Thicket, Wheat, Pansy
Colors - Gray, Silver, Black, Blue
Other Tools - Steam, Incense/Smoke, Wands, Besoms, Branches, Storm Water/Rain Water, Ash, Dust, Mirrors and Gray Candles
Fog Summoning
There are many ways said to summon fog. A few of those ways will be listed below
Method 1: Using storm water boiling it until it has thick amounts of steam rising from it, carefully move it outside or to a window (if one is not already outside) and offer it to the sky. Many will chant or call to the weather or winds to bring them fog much like the steam of the pot.
Method 2: In water on a burner add storm or sea salt and a sigil on paper for fog. Close the lid to it and wait until it is boiling. Remove the lid and allow the steam to rise. Here chant if desired for fog or let the water boil until it is nearly gone.
Method 3: With a besom go outside if it is a private space and much like wind summoning call to the fog to come to you, using your tool as an extension of yourself and your energy. Remember to ask it to come rather than demand for it.
Method 4: Using storm water or rain water, ash and a jar fill it with these ingredients and shake it thoroughly to summon fog. Be sure to center yourself and focus on your energy to put into this fog summoning jar. Leave it outside or in a window afterwards for further effects.
Fog Water
Fog water is a tool that can be used for witchcraft when fog is not rightfully available or in place of rain water/storm water in fog summoning. To capture fog water is pretty easy though you must be able to accept small amounts.
First you will need either very fine fabric or mesh or screen similar to what can be found in windows or for fishing nets. Tight it taunt onto something to hold it up like rods or sticks. Make sure it is held up at least a couple feet above the ground and somewhere the fog will roll through it. Base it off of how high the fog in your area tends to be, if you have low rolling fogs it may work better lower to the ground. After or during a time of fog you should be able to see droplets of water forming on it, you may use a jar tied below a corner of it to capture these drops or you can collect it yourself during/after they have formed. You can build much larger versions of this for potable water gathering and tutorials on this can be found easily online if that may interest you.
Store your fog water in glass containers and in the fridge, be sure to date and label to ensure you are using fresh water. Do not drink this water unless you set up the proper potable filtration systems.
Diffusing Fog
Often witches will find themselves tasked with fog being a hindrance rather than helpful. Its a dangerous weather condition especially for those on the road or at sea.Â
Historically, sea witches would be asked to disperse fog for the safe return and port of sea vessels and the men upon them. Though it is difficult to find exact spells from these times, often broom or heather is used by facing the sea with it in hand and waving at the fog, putting energy into it and telling the fog to disperse. Other times it is said using a broom/besom to summon winds to remove the fog was a preferred way.
Other options for witches is to sing a fog removal song and often dance accompanied with it and with either a besom or wand in hand, direct the fog to travel away from you and somewhere else. Other witches have found success in praying and working with weather deities to move the fog back to the sky or to lead it away.
Omens, Superstitions and Dreams
In omens it is said fog represents blindness. It blocks our ability to see clearly and makes normal directions seem impossible to follow. It can go hand in hand with confusion and the feelings of anxiety. When fog appears in visions it is to be seen often as a warning that things are about to get just that - foggy.
Though it is also related to shrouding oneself, it may be a sign that it is time for you to create a fog about yourself and to build up those wards.
Superstition wise it was believed fog would steal people, often due to people getting lost in it and vanishing, because of this fog is seen as a warning of loss to come. Some cultures even associate it directly with death.
In dreams fog holds many meanings. If the fog is throughout the whole dream then it is a warning of deception. Someone is deceiving you and deep down you know it to be true. If you dream of being wrapped in fog and it is too thick to see through or escape it is often related to feeling that someone has stolen something from you. Dreaming of wandering in a foggy environment is a warning of dangers to come, keep on your toes. If you escape fog it means you are avoiding danger or theft.
If one dreams of fog just being around their head, eyes or following above them like a halo/hat, then it is an indication that you are lying to yourself. You are refusing to let yourself see the truth. It can also be a play of the saying âits all in your headâ meaning you are overthinking a problem.
If you dream of fog and snow together, it is often said to be a dream related to sickness soon to come. Others say its a sign that illness of the mind and emotions is going to creep its way in.
If one dreams of their home, bedroom or apartment being filled with fog it is often taken as a bad omen and sign that a large family drama is soon to come.
Seeing a figure in fog in dreams can have different meanings. If it is someone that you know it means they may be hiding things from you or that you are going to have a fight with them in the near future. It can also indicate if you are in the fog and you see them outside of the fog, that you are guilty about something you did to them. Seeing a stranger in the fog or a shadow you do not recognize is often due to anxiety or fear in oneâs waking life. They represent the unknown and the future to come, which you are currently stressed over. Animals in the fog can represent both anxieties and fears looming about you but also can represent that you a repressing your own desires and natural wants.
If you see fog rolling in from the distance of a dream it means something is looming in your waking life. If fog starts descending down on you in a dream from the sky to the ground, many take this as a bad omen for travel especially by air or sea. Historically it is said a foggy sea in your dreams means a shipwreck in your future. Though fog over a lake or river means dream-like wonder and is said that young women who dream of this can expect a mysterious stranger in their future.
Fog and Different Types of Witchcraft
Sea Witchcraft - Fog is often seen as more of a hindrance in ocean magick, especially historically when fog at sea or port could be rather hazardous and bring tragedy to many. Due to this, fog in sea magick is often used for more negative tasks like cursing.
Storm Magick - Fog is often seen more in the light of a less harsh type of weather compared to storms or rain but still one that can be used to harness energy. The energy of foggy weather is much more mysterious, calm and hazy than that of storm or wind. It can be used for such purposes.
Death Magick - Fog is often related to the barriers of the other-side as some may say, so many death witches will take advantage of fog to use it to communicate and commune with the dead. Many report that it can make using tools of communication like Ouija boards and pendulums easier.
Divination - Often fog can be seen as a hindrance for divination though it is often deeply routed with self discovery and past life work. Many will take the opportunity of foggy weather to explore their past lives and the history of themselves and others.Â
When Your Spell Fails
no witch succeeds with their spells 100% of the time. hereâs a short list of reasons why it could have happened and some solutions
possible reasons why:
distraction - a spell youâre not invested in isnât going to have much power behind it. if youâre concentrated more on you. if you cast a motivation spell while planning out your vacation, itâs going to subtract from that motivation.Â
rosemary replaces everything - supposedly. it supplies general power, but if you add nothing into the spell that has any real meaning to you, then what is that power supposed to do? where does that energy go with no direction?
associations - the correspondences everyone else lists for herbs and stones and planets can be very useful, but sometimes you have a personal conflicting association. perhaps lavender is gross to you, and not peaceful at all. then that dream sachet isnât going to give you peaceful dreams.Â
didnât help the spell - magic does not exist in a vaccum. spells can only do so much, but if you donât make the effort, it much less likely to work. job spells dont work if you donât fill out applications, love spells donât work if you donât go out and talk to people, and so on.Â
too many cooks - if you cast 10 love spells, and yet no one is attracted to you, itâs entirely possible they all did work but they all conflicted with each other, and ended up canceling each other out.Â
shot for the stars- sometimes you try to achieve something, and you set your expectations too high. either itâs impossible, youâre trying from the wrong angle, or you didnât get as much as you wanted.
cancellation - sometimes a spell may appear not to work when it does, but the results are invisible because it canceled something else out. say you cast a money spell and get no extra cash after several weeks, it could be just helping you maintain your current income and blocking extraneous expenses.
impatience - unless you programmed a working time limit into it, the spell could be working and you just donât see the results yet. these things can take time.
out of your depth - if you donât feel like youâre ready to do a spell, your lack of confidence or discomfort can either disable the spell or not give it enough power to work
what to do:
take a break, ground, cleanse, and give it time. refocus your intentions
contemplate each ingredient and step in the spell, and modify
use the ingredients that you know best work for you, old standards hold up.
think about what you could do to help the spell work. what mundane methods havenât you tried?
take a step back and look at it realistically. is there another angle you can approach this from, can you break it down into smaller steps?
return to the spells you are comfortable doing, and work from there.

đ Manifestation Spell đ
A spell to manifest something into your life, to be performed under the new moon.
You will need :
đ Jar or other container đ Water đ Black food colouring (or any colour you associate with nothingness) đ Square white paper (or any colour you associate with existence) đ A new moon
What to do :
đFill your jar with water. đWrite down on the paper what youâre trying to manifest, and then fold it into an origami shape. It doesnât have to be overly complex, it just has to be something other than a square. It helps if thereâs a correspondence between what youâre manifesting and the shape you fold your paper into. đPut the folded paper into the water and then add your food colouring. đLeave the jar with the water and paper in it outside to charge in the new moonâs moonlight. đ In the morning, take the jar back inside and keep it somewhere it wonât be touched by moonlight from other lunar phases. The universe will start aiding you in the manifestation now.
As the paper disintegrates, your desire will be in the process of manifesting. Once your paper is nearly gone, your desire will have completely or almost completely manifested, as long as youâve followed the correct path during this to make it happen.

Disposing of Spell Materials
sometimes after performing a spell, you find yourself wondering, hmm, what do i do with these ingredients? the way you clean up or put away your materials can be its own step in the ritual, and affect the spell. here are some suggestions for the different ways to end rituals or properly dispose of the materialsÂ
consider first:
đŚkeep it - consider if the spell seems like something you could ever possible need to reverse later. that love-attraction jar may invite people you donât like, and need to be ended, but itâs more difficult without the original materials. keep the ingredients in a jar, box, or something, (maybe label it too) so you can easily nullify the spell if you need to.
âwrap it up - in a jar or a pouch, if it is a spell you want to last a long time, gather the ingredients you wonât be reusing and keep them in a place you
đşjar spells - just keep the materials in the sealed jar. this is the sort of spell that can be reused simply by shaking the jar, lighting a new candle for it or recharging its energy.Â
đcleanse and reuse - obviously you donât want to throw your crystals or jars out after a single spell. separate the materials used and cleanse them individually, cutting the ties to the spell.Â
now what do i do with it?
đĽitâs been burned to ash - for banishing place it on the back doorstep and sweep it out into the wind. for releasing its energies and inviting influence, release the ashes into running water, given it is safe to return to nature (non glass, nonplastic nontoxic, biodegradable etc)
đ¸bound objects - bury or keep in a box somewhere, burial for spells you will never remove, hiding for things you may undo one day.Â
đĄprotective spells - best hung up or hidden in a corner of the house, or place over the front door of the residence.Â
âŁnon-biodegradable materials - if its something you canât safely return to nature, and it canât be reused because it was burned or broken, use the acting of burning or breaking to move the spellâs energies into the world. properly throw out or recycle the objects.
A little tarot spread you can do with a deity you want to start working with! :D Did this when I approached Hades and it helped me get a better understanding of what heâs like and what he wants me to achieve and do ~

"...plants that reach for the sun have a strong solar quality, which lends itself to workings of healing, happiness, and joy.
Plants that are poisonous or develop strong root systems and return year after year have a saturnine quality, lending themselves to necromancy, cursing, and dark spirit work.
Plants with barbs, thorns, or irritants are martial in nature and are useful for defense and success in competitive areas.
If a plant has large, fragrant blossoms, it can be said to possess a venereal nature, potent in love, friendship, and beauty.
Plants that hold watery or milky substances or enjoy the shade have a lunar quality, useful in divination and foresight.
Plants with complex, small leaves or petals that flutter in the wind often have a mercurial nature, useful for learning, communication, and trade.
Plants that produce prolific nuts or seeds are connected to the planetary force of Jupiter, useful for success, wealth, and influence."

I'm pretty sure Henry Cornelius would approve.
Localizing Your Practice
So much witchcraft emphasizes how important it is to honor and work with the Earth, but then teaches us spells with ingredients we basically have to import using locations we donât have access to. Itâs rare to find an existing grimoire or guide book that actually works with where we live. We can still use them, but it doesnât enhance our connection to our local land, which to many can feel important. Here are some tips for localizing your practice and working with the land you actually live on.
See what nature exists around you. Explore your own backyard with a critical eye. What plants can you actually go and pick yourself? What are those plants associated with? Do you have access to a creek or river? What does your local land actually have on it? If magic correspondences for your local plants havenât been written about, you may have to do your own research.
Example: I grow several plants on my back porch which I can potentially use for magic. There are magnolia trees and rhodedendrons on the grounds of my apartment complex. My parentâs neighbors have chickens in the backyard, so I have access to some feathers when they shed.Â
Check out local folklore, legends, etc. This is one of my favorite parts, but can also be the hardest. What are the stories of your area, both on a local and cultural scale.Â
Example: A West Virginian may incorporate legends of the Mothman. Everyone says that one building on my old college campus is haunted (and theyâre right.) People talk about that liminal-space feeling when you drive down that one road at night.
Find the magic spots. Sometimes the urban legends will tip you off to these (usually in a bad way) but other times you can find them on your own. A place where the energy is just right for some reason. A place you can go to be closer to nature, or a place you could host a ritual if needed. Sometimes itâs just a place where you can feel your mind open a little bit.
Example: The shady corner of a public park. The tunnel downtown. That weirdly-perfect circle of trees in the woods behind Wal-Mart.
Meet your land wights. Spirits of the local land. This could be the fair folk, but also house spirits, the spirits of the trees near you, the nature spirits of wherever you are. Theyâre there. Be good to them and theyâll be good to you!Â
Note: Some spirits and wights will not be interested in working with you, and thatâs okay. I generally think itâs good to at least leave a polite offering to just be on general decent terms even if you never work with them more directly beyond that.Â
Check in with your Seasons. Harvest holidays generally donât have actual lifestyle importance to most people reading this. The seasonal shifts other people write about may be from a very different climate than yours! Figure out a calendar that works for you. It doesnât have to be detailed, but something that ties you to the seasons as you actually experience them. I also love working in any fun annual festivals nearby, if any.
