I realized I never posted these here on tumblr! 2020 did unspeakable things to my mind and bodyâŚI staggered away from lockdown with a whole pitch of how I would make an animated Cats adaptation. I got the whole thing up here *taps skull*âit would be Very Good. I canât think about it too much lest I awaken my sleeping obsessionâŚstill want to finish Old Deut and Macavity one of these days.
Fun fact: The term "Jellicle Cat" is actually the catsâ mishearing of the term "Dear Little Cat" (this gives me much joy)

COMRADE POTHOLE
Hi so this phenomena is whats known as a sinkhole. For those of you that dont know let me lay it out for you.
So heres the general idea: A road is built, somehow, overtop a large cavern or cave. Doesn't really matter how. Now, the dirt is usually packed enough to support itself for a bit, because otherwise there wasnt a cave to begin with. Somehow, a pothole exists. That pothole gets deeper somehow, maybe erosion. Over time, it gets deep enough to start breaking in to the cave. Slowly, over time, the dirt stops supporting itself. Gets loose or whatever. And it all falls into that cave. So what was once a perfectly safe street with a Pig Factory above it is now a massive 30 foot hole in the ground with part of a Pig Factory in it.
Meant to include this
Sometimes the hole didn't exist before but a leaky pipe caused underground erosion or compaction that created a hole. That's more common in new cities that don't put much into maintaining infrastructure.
small pothole the size of a large pothole the size of a police department

#this is what itâs like trying to write fic for us-based fandoms#âIs that a movie trope or do people actually do that?â - via ellynneversweet
Dialect differences of interest:
âIn hospitalâ -> Americans say âin the hospital.â
âMotorwayâ -> highway.
âCrispsâ â> âchipsâ but he knew that haha a lot of this is jokes
âShiteâ -> âshitâ but I think he knew that, this is clearly jokes
But most tellingly thereâs an interesting one:
âSlippyâ (âthe road was slippyâ)
British, Irish, and Australian people have a part of the dialect where describing something, and they make it âverb-yâ. Examples are âsquirty creamâ (aerosol whipped cream), or âwheelie binâ (the big trash can with wheels that you park outside). A viral picture of a door with a sign: âCaution: door is slammy.â Filtered honey that stays stable at room temp is ârunny honey.â âSlippyâ comes in quite naturally before âslippery.â However, most of the time itâs spontaneous: you apply the verb instantly in the situation and are understood even if it isnât part of the normal lexicon. Doors are not commonly labelled âslammyâ but everyone gets it.
It is only something you really notice when part of the dialect and I donât really know what itâs called - Iâm not a linguist - but it would be called something like âcompulsive verb dimunitizingâ or something. And Americans donât do it. An American in this conversation might say âthe road was icy/slipperyâ, but would be more likely to describe the situation: âhe went into black ice!â âHe took a pothole at 80!â
To Americans, âthe road was slippyâ in a conversation like this sounds borderline deranged and slightly disrespectful - absolute baby talk, like saying âthe road was slippy-wippy and Chad got very silly! Now heâs deady-weady!â
Being American but also raised by gnomes, I personally love it. Letâs make verbs diminutive and use them as adjectives! Yeah! Letâs be little freaks!
Anyway, itâs that kind of thing that gets ya in dialects, and then people GET YOUR ASS
Wait back up. Squirty cream is a real actual term? And not something made up as a joke to fool idiot Americans??
I mean, it isnât written on the packaging but itâs the colloquial term. For example, here is Tesco knowing what Iâm asking for
Something linguistically interesting here about once again describing the verb of the item (it squirts/sprays) rather than the situation of the item (whipped cream)
See also:
Fizzy drinks (carbonated soft drinks)
Dippy egg (soft boiled egg served in an egg cup. Fun fact: the thin strips of toast that you dip into the egg are traditionally referred to as 'soldiers')
Eggy bread (what you guys apparently call 'French toast')
I maintain that âeggy breadâ and âcheese toastieâ are the superior terms for those foods, and Iâve shamelessly appropriated them.
Mind blown đ
So pure and adorable
I watched this like 6 the times I never tire of his reaction
Absolutely pure. What a trick, what a reaction!
The way his accent comes out heavy when heâs impressed is so pure.
