ooooh okay yes anon thank you for allowing me to indulge in talking about my biological son ben kindel of whom i love very much

i just posted something recently about how kindy would be a common weasel. they're these tiny little rodents who are long and skinny with itty bitty faces and are also predators. they're sneaky, fast, and shockingly fierce for their size, all of which i think describes kindy very well:)

the sidgeno of it all is a little more complicated. i think in the hybrid universe he isn't their biological son. geno's a male bear and sid's a male lynx; unfortunately they don't have the proper, um, equipment to have a child together.

but no matter, because kindy- the tiny ferocious predator he is- gets scooped up by geno's massive bear paws on the first day of training camp and promptly placed into sidney's care. something in the bear's instincts grabbed onto kindy the second he saw him and sid always had a soft spot for young hybrids. so if one was in, they both were.

kindy's so stunned by the turn of events that he doesn't protest much. he doesn't even really know why he got sort of pseudo-adopted but he's definitely not questioning it.

it becomes instinctive to defer to sidney or geno, not just as a rookie to his leadership or as predator to much larger predators, but as a child to his parents too. he spends most of his time off the rink at either of their houses- eating, watching game tape or other hockey games, asking about their time in the NHL. he barely even goes to his own apartment anymore. he drives to and from games with geno and does his own, new little routine with sid during warmups.

he knows he looks like a little kid trailing after his parents because that's what he feels like. and not in a bad way; it's just the truth.

vancouver training with mack and his roster of young hockey players was interesting. kindy was hesitant to go at first because he really only knew mack, but sid and geno encouraged him. they both had summer plans already that kindy wasn't joining them for and they wanted him to have some friends in the league his own age. kindy had pouted at that slightly, but hadn't disagreed. no one on the pens was hardly even close to his age; they were jokingly called the retirement home of the league for a reason.

but once kindy got over his initial nerves and got out there, he had a lot of fun. training with mack was brutal, as always. the ragdoll didn't know how to take a break ever it seemed like. perpetually and constantly locked in. but connor and fraser were super nice, though disgustingly in love with each other. dickie and misa were fun too and commisserated with kindy about the awful training schedule mack had put together.

he does eventually join sid in halifax for training. partially because he wants to train with the great sidney crosby again and partially because he misses his kind-of dad. sid had always been a little bit less physically affectionate but apparently distance had done him in because he wrapped kindy up into a hug as soon as he saw him again. it was long and warm and comforting and kindy could feel the lynx rubbing his chin to the top of kindy's head where it rested under his jaw, scenting him deeply. he could feel the rumble of a purr in sid's chest and his own little affectionate growl respond.

his reunion with geno is somehow an even bigger deal. geno had always been the louder of the two, both in volume and affection, so kindy can't say he surprised when the big russian bear scoops him up again at training camp and basically carries him around the locker room, sid looking on from his stall with blatant affection in his eyes. he eventually softly tells geno to "put their kid down before he throws his back out before he even steps on the ice" with his tail swishing gently behind him. geno listens obediently and ruffles kindy's hair, affectionately petting at his small ears, before pressing a kiss to the top of his head and then sid's.

I know I'm not the only one who saw it when the pens pr posted this yesterday.

or when he mentions geno at every possible moment when he’s around other people

i think sid is sooo desperate while texting geno. he constantly wants to know what g is doing, where he is, and who he's with. everytime g has a new ig story or is tagged in a new photo, sid is texting him about it (we all know sid is lurking with his finsta and he has post notifications turned on for geno). sid also responds lightning fast and laughs at every joke g makes (out loud and through text, while blushing and kicking his feet)

and everyone knows to not ask sid about why he's smiling/laughing or who he's texting because he will go into a 30 minute spiel about geno. but if you're curious, don't you worry because sid will bring it up anyways later unprompted and let you know about how amazing and funny geno and you quickly find out that somehow everything and anything reminds him of g...

but the gag is sid thinks he's being so chill and normal

meanwhile geno thinks sid is like this with everyone... (as sid has like 24 unread messages and 6 people left on read and is interrupting everyone to bring up geno)

Yeah, I guess I do. But like, what even is a star beam, you know? Now, a lead pipe to the shins? That's just reliable, baby.

sid gets pregnant (by geno ofc) halfway through his first season unintentionally and ends up giving birth in the off season((much to his relief)) but unfortunately the baby is born wayyyyyy prematurely and so there’s a chance he’s not going to make it. sid and geno werent officially together when sid got pregnant but by the time the baby comes they are and so sid at least has geno with him in the hospital

they keep the baby(mack) under observation while he gets stronger and even with a few sort of close calls, he continues to grow and get stronger and he becomes their little fighting miracle baby of sorts.

the downside of being young parents who travel a lot for work is sid and geno genuinely can’t take care of a child full time. so they raise mack to the best of their abilities but they do have to have reinforcements((ie sid’s mom)) take care of him most of the time while they’re playing

this does unfortunately put a strain on specifically sidney’s omega mothering instincts because even though mack recognizes him as his mama and geno recognizes mack as their son, sidney’s omega doesn’t have the typical impenetrable omega/pup bond that usually forms in the first year or so of the pups life. it’s there! just not as strong

so sid’s omega spends a lot of time sort of mourning that close bond that he didn’t get to make with their son as a baby. it gets better with age and sid obviously loves mack like no other but it’s just sort of niggling present thing

but he tries to ignore it and does a pretty good job at it. he and geno love each other and become mates when things get a little steadier in their careers and in their parenting. mack is their darling little angel who terrorizes their local community on the ice and then goes on to terrorize the world at large in hockey

so the omega/pup bond issue sort of fades away as mack gets older and gets more independent so sid forgets about it.

until kindy walks into the locker room.

kindy still hasn’t presented by the time he arrives at PPG and he doesn’t have a super noticeable omega/pup bond that sidney can sniff out and it’s like his omega just jumps at the chance. it’s unusual for an omega to imprint on an older pup like kindy but not unheard of and even so sidney has never been one to be anything less than extraordinary so of course he bonds with kindy on the spot

now kindy on the other hand doesn’t really understand what’s happening. since he’s unpresented he doesn’t have the same level of understanding when it comes to dynamics but he knows he’s drawn to sid for some reason, more so than any of the other vets. at first he brushes it off as hero worship bc that’s literally his hockey idol, but as time goes on and he starts to view sid as his omega mother he starts to realize that’s not the case.

kindy never really had a great relationship with his own parents. they weren’t around a lot and then he wasn’t around a lot so they didn’t have the same parent/child bond they probably should’ve. which makes it even easier for kindy to imprint on sid right back.

so now there’s this very delicate entanglement of sid, kindy, and mack, where sid is sort of technically their shared mom but they aren’t exactly brothers?? they don’t really get a chance to talk about it in person because mack’s in san jose but sidney tells him about it as soon as it happens and when they do get a chance to see each other in person again, all three of them get a meal together so they can talk in person.

mack’s not offended by the imprinting, but he is confused and very privately a little hurt. he thinks it’s something he did and sid can smell the shame in his pup and is reassuring him before the seed plants further in his mind that this is absolutely not macklin’s fault. this is nobody’s fault. this is just instincts, which can’t be controlled or explained or predicted.
