Imagine being David Stephen Rossi, a hot old Italian man working into his 70s at a high stress high pressure job. You lose your wife possibly to COVID. You get so obsessed with an elusive serial killer case that you break protocol to pursue the unsub right to his front door and end up getting kidnapped and locked in a shipping container. This harrowing experience fucks you up so badly you start seeing your dead wife and when you're rescued you start seeing the unsub everywhere and go a little off the rails. You finally catch the bastard and may or may not try to have him assassinated in prison. The fucker wakes up and claims amnesia and you're skeptical but the brain scans check out. To make matter worse this notorious serial killer imprints on you like a baby duck and before you know it you're sympathizing with the guy, holding him while he cries, keeping him company, caring about him. You refuse to admit it but you truly believe he's changed. And then he helps you catch like 50 other serial killers, saves his neurologist's life, confesses to every crime you previously couldn't nail him with, and begs you to kill him to stop him from ever going back to the monster he once was. So now you've caught the guy and you can guarantee a conviction but the little bastard has made you want to fight him on it. You realize you want him to live and get better. You never say it but both of you wonder how his life might have been different if he'd had a father like you. You have a feeling this case is going to haunt you forever.
