"making them afraid will make them more racist" that's wild to me, because we live in a whole culture of social consequences for antiracism anyway. It is literally safer to be a racist than it is to speak up against it, socially.

Idk about you, but "I'm afraid no one will want to be my friend if I'm a white supremacist" seems like a pretty logical thought process to have, and I wish THAT were the normal and not "I'm afraid my friends will hate me if I tell them they made racist jokes".

Noo lol I knew I’d regret phrasing it that way. This is tumblr, after all…

It’s not “people who contour are themselves automatically racist” but that the desired face shape created by contouring is one that, at the end of the day, pretty much reflects existing white standards of beauty. A thinner, pointier nose, smaller chin, high angled cheekbones and (on occasion) smaller lips. Also if you’re darker skinned you have to use a much lighter shade of foundation thus ending up with an overall lighter face.

No, you are absolutely correct. In fact it is not even lowkey in the performance arts/entertainment world. I’ve known how to contour since I was 9, because I was in ballet. I was taught by an older Asian dancer who told me that I was already darker than everyone else, my face couldn’t look different too. So she showed me the basics, then left me with a picture of a white person as the goal to emulate.

It’s always been explicit and intentionally racist in terms of what is considered correct contouring technique is to emulate white associated features. Which is not to say that contouring is bad, but it is good to ask ourselves why we do not contour to make our noses look wider and more distinguished. Or why we don’t shadow and highlight to make the face look perfectly round? While contouring is not bad ( and is actually very cool to literally be able to control the way people perceive your face, it’s like magic) it’s good to ask ourselves why we contour the way we do.

there is a lot of problems with the performance world and makeup generally in that a lot of makeup artists for film and tv Do Not Know how to do makeup for darker skin and even the cinematographers and lighters need to light the screen differently when working with black actors. This is something that was handled very well in films like Sinners and you can see some of the worst examples of makeup on black people in older, for example blaxploitation films, like blacula (these are real words and films I promise) whew the actors look like they have lots of white powder on their face because the white people working on the films didn’t know how to do makeup for black faces.

a lady with a developmental disability once explained to me that she'd overheard some kids calling each other retarded in the mall we'd visited earlier that day. searching for something to say that might comfort her, I explained that they don't know anything about people like her and so they weren't really talking about her, just being ignorant.
