You guys are dangerously close to realizing specifically what kinds of people they keep from voting and why.
I want to drill this into everybodyās head:
The United States of America has the highest prison population in the world
Black Americans and Latin people make up the majority of this population (many of whom are non-violent offenders)
Federal Prisons in America require that their state keeps their prisons at a maximum occupancy at all times.
The 13th amendment did not entirely abolish slaveryā¦just one form of it. It remains legal through industrial prison system
Oh and we have privatized prisons which allow companies to actually make money off of keeping people incarceratedĀ
Hereās whatās really perverse: prisoners, who cannot vote, still get counted in the U.S. Census. The more prisoners a county has, the more representation it gets, even though the prisoners cannot vote. See how that works? The more black and brown people they lock up, the more government resources and political representation they get. Even though those prisoners have no say and cannot vote.
If county-A has a population of 50 voters but no prisons, and county-B has a population of 50 voters and 50 prisoners, the county with the prisoners gets more government funding and more political represention. This is sometimes called āprison gerrymanderingā and it is used in redistrictring.
Not so fun Fact: Southern states that reliably vote for Republicans also have the highest prison population in the United States. (source). So mass incarceration is a double whammy. Itās both a form of voter suppression and a tool to strengthen white peopleās political power.
i know thereās a lot going on but ICE are now one step closer to literally creating gas chambers. they are spraying a chemical called HDQ neutral roughly 100 times a day, every 15 minutes at the adelanto detention center (one of the biggest in the country). people are getting rashes, headaches, their insides are bleeding, etc. the guards are wearing gloves and masks but the detainees have NOTHING. and hereās a quick reminder - america inspired the nazis to create gas chambers when they gassed latino people during the 1917 bath riots.Ā
hereās a petition to sign.Ā itās close to itās goal. if thereās anything else we can do to help iāll update this post.
Please be aware and be safe
Random, but a really handy way to make things seem creepy or wrong in horror is to make them incongruously neat or clean:
In the middle of a horrific battlefield, you find one corpse laid aside neatly, straightened and arranged, its arms crossed neatly across its chest
As you walk through the garden, you gradually realise that the oddness youāve been noticing about the trees is that they are all perfectly symmetrical
As you move through the abandoned house, you realise that suddenly that thereās no dust in this room, no dirt or cobwebs
You hear hideous noises coming from behind a locked door, screams and pleas, and visceral sounds of violence. When you manage to break down the door, there is no one there, and the room is perfectly spotless
In the middle of a horrific battlefield, a hollow full of churned mud and blood, you find five corpses cleanly dismembered, each set of limbs or parts neatly laid out in their own little row
You witness a murder, a brutal, grisly killing that carpets the area in blood. When you return in a blind panic with the authorities, the scene is completely clean, and no amount of examination can find even a drop of blood
You run through the night and the woods with a comrade, pulling each other through leaves and twigs and mud as you scramble desperately towards freedom. When you finally emerge from the forest, in the grey light of dawn, you turn to your companion in relief, and notice that their clothes are somehow perfectly clean
You hand a glass of water to your suspect, talking casually the whole while, and watch with satisfaction as they take it in their bare hand and take a drink. Thereāll be a decent set of prints to run from that later. Except there isnāt. There are no prints at all. As if nothing ever touched the glass
You browse idly through your hostās catalogue, and stop, and pay much more attention, when you realise that several items on a dry list of acquisitions are ones youāve seen before, and it slowly dawns on you that each neat little object and number in this neat little book are things that belong (belonged?) to people you know
Neatness, particularly incongruous neatness, neatness where you expect violence or imperfection or abandonment, or neatness that you belatedly realise was hiding violence, or neatness that is imposed over violence, is incredibly scary. Because neatness is not a natural thing. Neatness requires some active force to have come through and made it so. Neatness implies that the world around you is being arranged, maybe to hide things, to disguise things, to make you doubt your senses, or else simply according to something elseās desires. Neatness is active and artificial. Neatness puts things, maybe even people, into neat little boxes according to something elseās ideals, and thatās terrifying as well. Being objectified. Being asked to fit categories that youāre not sure you can fit, and wondering what will happen to the bits of you that donāt.
Neatness, essentially, says that something else is here. Neatness where there should be chaos says that either something came and changed things, or that what youāre seeing now or what you saw then is not real. Neatness alongside violence says that something came through here for whom violence did not mean the same thing as it does to you.
Neatness, in the right context, in the right place, can be very, very scary
And fun
I love it when cleanliness is next to ungodliness.
This happened in my latest Pathfinder game and it literally derailed us for 20 minutes because we were too spooked to investigate

i made a quiz whose answers are entirely made up of things that donāt actually exist.Ā take this to simulate how confusing it feels when people ask questions based off their own experiences and you have no idea how this will effect your results.Ā
Terrible quiz, thank you
THIS ACTUALLY WAS A LOT OF FUN, THANKS!
how⦠how did I not know abt this
Completely unrelated to whether or not you like their music, you have to respect this energy.
I mean, considering heās on record as saying heās had āgender identity issuesā and āalways identified a fair amount with the female genderā I think might be fair to retroactively reinstate him to that last ranking.
idk if anyone will find this useful, but this is how i go about planning my stories. i mostly write fantasy, so thatās what this is most applicable to. but it could work with other genres too.
so thereās three major components to a story: the characters, the plot, and the world. creating them individually is the easy part, but they all connect and affect each other in different ways. (like you canāt have a character who loves peaches and eats them every day if they live a peasant in a region that doesnāt grow peaches, for example.)
so i created a cheat sheet to help connect all three components together.
1) the world creates the characters.
this is related to the peach example above. the characters should be a direct result of the environment they grew up in and the environment they currently live in.
2) the characters are limited by the world.
also related to the peaches. characters canāt do anything outside of what the rules of their surroundings and universe allow, such as eating peaches when theyāre not available. this also applies for magic users. they canāt have unlimited magic, so keep in mind what you want out of both the characters and the world when creating magic systems.
3) the characters carry the plot.
weāve all heard it before: ābad characters canāt carry a good plot. good characters can carry a bad plot.ā but we all like a good plot anyway. try to make sure youāre not giving your characters too heavy or too light of a plot to carry.
4) the plot pushes the characters.
if nothing in the plot happens, your characters will remain static forever. if you struggle with plots, try starting with what character development you want to happen, then go from there.
5) the plot depends on the world.
you canāt overthrow the evil government if there isnāt one. think of what your world needs most and what your plot is centered around, and fit those two together.
6) the world is changed by the plot.
even if your plot is centered around something most of your world would call āinsignificantā, the world will still experience some change from the plot. either the evil government will be gone, or maybe that one teacher is now way more careful about keeping an eye on the test key. either way, the world will be different from now on.
final note: usually people will be able to write one or two of the components with ease, but donāt know where to go from there. i personally canāt write plots, but thinking this way has really helped me actually make a story out of the world and characters because i looked at what i needed from what i had. i really hope this can help you too! happy writing!
tl;dr this is a cheat sheet to help anyone who struggles with writing one or two of what i consider the three major components to a story.
āNow, Tinker Bell was not all bad. Sometimes she was all good. But fairies are so small they only have room for one feeling at a timeā¦ā
Kim Keever
āMiniature topographies inside 200-gallon fish tanks, based on traditional landscapeĀ paintings. Keever fills the tanksĀ with water once heās sculpted and placed the miniatures, and colored lights and pigments create dense, atmospheric environments.Ā He views his works as an evolution of the landscape tradition andĀ deliberately acknowledges the conceptual artifice.āĀ

This is important.
Itās not a āloopholeā itās explicit within the text of the amendment
āLoopholeā lmfao like itās a fucking accident, like it wasnāt purposefully structured to reclaim and expand a source of free labor
We never outlawed slavery in America. We simply transferred ownership of slaves from individual landowners to the government and large corporations.
Other fun facts about prison labor corporations:
-Federal and state-run prisons usually pay their slaves minimum wage; some states, however, like Colorado, pay $2/hour.
-Private prisons pay $.17-.50/hour. The highest paying private prison is in Tennessee, which pays $.50/hour for āhighly-skilled labor.ā
-You think that hasnāt affected wages in the US? You think that hasnāt removed manufacturing jobs from the economy?
-Companies that contract with private prisons for their slave labor include: IBM, Boeing, Motorola, Microsoft, AT&T, Wireless, Texas Instrument, Dell, Compaq, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Lucent Technologies, 3Com, Intel, Northern Telecom, TWA, Nordstromās, Revlon, Macyās, Pierre Cardin, Target Stores. Many, many products that say āMade in USAā were made in prison.
-Private prisons often have quotas with the states, wherein the states contractually guarantee that they will provide a certain number of prisoners to fill the beds of a private prison, and if they donāt then they owe the private prison millions of dollars. Iām not making this up. It happened in Colorado after they legalized weed.
-States have a financial incentive to lock up their citizens.
-All of the above corporations have a financial incentive to see citizens get locked up.
-This is why Jeff Sessions is going after weed. The prison industrial complex needs slaves.
-To the shock of absolutely no one, private prisons have even more disparate racial demographics than federal/state prisons.
-Where do you think they send undocumented immigrants who have been rounded up? Thatās right, private prisons. Thatās why so many of them are in the South. So they take immigrants who are earning some kind of comparable wage and paying income tax to the government, and put them in prison where the wages are absurdly depressed and the prison pays virtually nothing in taxes.
-Oh yeah: private prisons pay virtually nothing in taxes. Because they technically manage real estate (prison as housing), they get all sorts of tax breaks and subsidies.
Tl;dr the prison industrial complex removes jobs from the economy, depresses wages, cheats the tax system, and ENSLAVES PEOPLE, usually people of color.
