The Life of a RoKii Shop - fashion & trends

Bestival is an award winning four-day boutique music festival, that took place between Thursday 2nd and Sunday 5th August 2018 at The Lulworth Estate – an enchanting, wooded country estate on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.

Bestival, the fancy dress friendly event now in its 2nd year in Dorset and also moving to August instead of wrapping up the UK’s summer festival season in September. It had been held at the Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight since 2004, growing from an event in which 10,000 people saw the Bees, Basement Jaxx and Zero 7 headline to one with a 55,000 capacity, attracting some of music’s biggest names. Some people have been against the move saying it has lost its original hippie like identity, and sold out to the corporate festival scene. But if you don’t have anything to compare to then i’m sure you’ll love it just the same, and this year proved it was still fun, colourful and the Best-Festival!!!

So what do you wear to a festival these days? where do you buy the items? and how crazy do you go? We’re in a very different time to 2004 when Bestival first started, perhaps that was the beginning of the end of the high street around that time, the internet was well established and places like ASOS and eBay were well on there way to taking over from the high street shopping experience. But what if you still want to stroll the streets, feel the fabrics, and get that instant buzz fix when you see that to-die-for garment in you size!!!?

It can be hard but its still possible, When i first started to shop with my own money it was an amazing experience to venture to a new city or town, and come home with these fabulous original garments from independent retailers, you felt like you had found something unique, no one else would have it, and it was money well spent. When your going clubbing every week you develop a taste for new looks and new outfits, well i did from a young age, that probably started with my love of changing my barbies clothes over and over, was cemented by watching my older sister getting dressed for forest raves and warehouse parties always in something new and amazing.

It pains me to say this having been and independent retailer myself for nearly a decade – the High Street has lost out to big retailers, and even those are closing now, House of Fraser next on the hit list, it seems there is no reliable place to shop on the high street and find something original and different. There are ways of finding unique items, the move has gone to online shopping and even though it doesn’t look like that will change a good way to try something new is to check out, Depop, ASOS Marketplace, eBay, or even advertise on your local Facebook marketplace for local designers and clothes makers. Often the people who are newest in the business can have the best ideas, as they haven’t been spoilt, their ideas are still free in their minds and they often are very reasonable on price, are willing to work with your and your own preferences, to create a festival ready masterpiece – that actually fits.

So what do you wear? well id always say firstly to anyone, whatever your comfortable in, in my experience, it doesn’t matter how good you look, if you always pulling that ill fitting dress down, the straps hurt, your shoes kill you before you even arrive, that PVC number is impossible to get back on once you’ve been to the dreaded portaloo, or you are constantly keeping an eye on your big heavy bag as its not in your sight, is this really what festivals are about – NO! I’ve worn t-shirts to festivals, its not all about putting it all on show, in the most sexiest revealing bedroom ready outfit, comfort is a must.

How crazy do you go? well again that’s up to you, but festivals are a great place to explore and push the boundaries, anything goes, its the one place you can mental and not get locked up, the crazier the better, so go as crazy as crazy is for you, get ideas through the year off of Instagram etc, save the photos to a collection on Instagram as if they tag the brands in the photos that info is stored to, and follow some hashtags, but id say don’t go overboard, and stop yourself close to the festival, especially if your someone who is likely to start comparing. Its not about comparison its about being inspired to be the best version of yourself. As a starting point think, Colour, Rainbows, Glitter, Sequins, Beading, Lace, Fringing, Tassels, Hologram, Iridescent, Shine, Print, Pattern, Natural fabrics where possible, simple shapes with outrageous fabrics, details and embellishments. Always go with your gut instinct, in the case of a festival, a not-sure or maybe, probably is a Yes, its just your confidence that is holding you back.

We were lucky enough to work with a Hair & Makeup Team that came over especially from Paris, France, to work on our Editorial that week of 24th June 2018. Azami a wonderful happy and generous MUA translated for Harley the Hair Stylist as he only spoke limited English, but that wasn’t stopping Harley translate his vision for the Hair in the shoot in his slick strong styling. As we had communicated a lot over Whatsapp before the shoot we knew exactly what the day would be about and the direction we were taking so even though it was the first time we had met, our styles married and what we produced was just perfect for Emily’s original concept.

The models traveled from across London and also outside of London to the Shoot location of Richmond, outer London. We were using 2 girls for the love story, a day out in the sunshine together, and finishing their day in the sunset of Richmond Park. Lucy Benton and Annie Maguire came from Bame Model Agency based in Central London.

We had an incredibly long, hot and sometimes pressurised day, but what we produced as a team i feel is some of my best work, we gelled as a group, and had fun, we were kind, helpful, and polite, traits that get you far in life and in Fashion!! we pulled together to pull-it-off!!

I’d like to use this blog as a public thank-you to Emily, Azami, Harley, Lucy & Annie, together we achieved something that reaches further than photographs on a page, we made lasting relationships, and i hope that we get to make more memories and more amazing inspirations.

Id like to add i couldn’t promote more the benefit to starting something, taking a chance, going for a dream, just doing it, its not about how well it goes, if it works, or if it lasts forever, its the journey you have in trying, in seeing what could be, giving it a go is giving yourself a go, giving yourself the chance to be the best you can be, and being your own cheerleader, being your own parent or teacher, and saying ‘here you go, you can do it, and no matter what ill be there for you’

Hey i may not have ended up on the ‘Forbes – Self-made Woman list’ but its not about how many zero’s you have in your bank account, i wouldn’t change my journey one bit, i got far much more than money from my business, i grew as a person, i inspired people, as they inspired me, i made lasting relationships and realised what it was i actually wanted in my life, from myself and others. One of the best things was the fact that many of my customers actually became my friends, they touched my heart, and empowered me, and i wanted to give my best to them and to the community, which gave me experiences, money just cant buy. The skills, ideas, passions, and craziness was all there in me, but taking a risk on ‘Me’ allowed all those things to flow, and without Rokii and those people i wouldn’t still be doing something i love 10 years on.

Thank-you to everyone who stuck by me, i may not have done it the best way, i may have made mistakes, and got some debts, broke many rules, but i never starved, i loved the freedom it gave me, and never gave up. Rokii was more than just a shop for me and many people, it was our home, a place where we could be ourselves, play loud music, wear loud clothes, start the party, have the party, end the party, have your ‘first***’ and most of all you left with an amazing outfit, which i hope like me your all still love today!!! It’ll be a hard place to top in many ways, but im so grateful for the memories, and that is Rokii’s biggest achievement.
