Ok.  I’m asking this seriously.  Public schools aren’t businesses.  They don’t turn a profit.  They aren’t running in the red.  How is opening schools back up supposed to jump start the economy?

Also “back to school” shopping which is extra food, clothes, supplies, electronics. The big corps want those dollars too.

Republicans also just want to destroy public schools. As soon as Brown v. Board happened, public schooling went from a collective good to a heinous burden on our tax dollars, because it might benefit a Black person. The first school vouchers / “school choice” programs existed to subsidize white families sending their kids to private “segregation academies,” but of course now charter schools are a big business, and only set to get bigger if there’s no public competition. It’s also harder for private school teachers to unionize (Republicans hate unions) and easier for charters to expel students and teach whatever the hell they feel like (because if you don’t like it, you have “choice”). Right now, a lot of families who can scrape together the money are moving their kids to private schools that can promise a virtual semester, or arranging for tutoring, rather than chancing their kids in a face-to-face public school. Trump is threatening to take away federal funds from publics that try to go all-virtual, so it’s damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Without the teachers, without enough enrollment, public education in much of this country will collapse, and then the voucher vultures will move in. It’s already happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina – all the “public” schools there are now charters. So they know it’ll work on a larger scale.
