I know we're all frothing at the mouth over Danny and Valerie's conflict and eventual resolution, as we should, because it's been a long time coming. But can we please talk about this scene between Sam and Valerie for a second?
Because as a girls' girl who was stiffed by a show that seemed to be allergic to its female characters having positive interactions, I am rabid over this kind of content!!
It was about goddamned time Sam and Valerie talked without all that cattiness and bitterness from the show, and boy did this deliver!
While brief, this scene perfectly encapsulates what must be going through their minds now that they're finally on the same page and there are no more secrets between them. With this short scene, it's clear to see they've gained some clarity on the other's motivations and behaviour and probably realised their own hand in things never really working out between them.
On Valerie's part, with the confirmation that Sam and Tucker knew all along about Danny's secret as well as her own, she's probably finally realised the true reason behind Sam's animosity towards her.
She wasn't just Danny's best friend lashing out at her out of overprotectiveness and jealousy over their mutual crush on each other. Rather, all along, Sam had legitimate grievances and concerns over Danny's safety around Valerie and what might have happened if he told her the truth and she didn't take it well. All of which Val's latest actions kind of validated and justified.
Meanwhile, as this issue has kind of been saying from beginning to end, Sam's probably realised she and the boys had a hand in things turning out the way they did, too.
Not just because Danny caused Valerie's fall from grace in the first place or couldn't muster up the courage to speak to her after the first Disasteroid. But also because Tucker and especially Sam always kept Valerie at arm's length after Shades of Gray.
A good chunk of Valerie's worst behaviour after losing her wealth is a direct result of not knowing how to navigate the new reality she found herself in, as well as extreme loneliness. And after everything that's happened, I think Sam finally sees it too. She finally sees that maybe things wouldn't have escalated like they did and they could've called Valerie an ally and friend much sooner if only they'd made a genuine effort to reach out and befriend her.
And all that is perfectly encapsulated behind that one little word: sorry.
"Sorry for not seeing you."
"Sorry for thinking the worst of you without even getting to know you."
"Sorry for all the pain you've been through."
