In some cultures, the wife is told that her husband is her new father. He will feed her and clothe her and take care of her. He will be her protector, her god.

And that's the Qijiu story for me. It's about a child raising another, and creating a bond for life– something no mere divorce or disowning will erase.

It's about a husband leaving behind his young wife in a cruel, backward village– going out to make his way in the world, trying to look for a way to make a better life for them both. It's about him being very, very late.

It's about YQ taking SJ into his new home and trying to lavish him with gifts, while the in-laws (read: the rest of the sect) make his life hell.

It's about SJ remaining.
