OMG, this series has a choke hold on my like none other!! I've played the game off and on for like a year and I've just recently gotten Rollo's card a few days ago, which also happened to be on my birthday! Best! Gift! EVER!! (・∀・)
Ahem, even though this gatcha game has gotten so popular I'm sure everyone but the neighborhood dog knows about this, but in case you don't, I'll explain:
So Twisted Wonderland is this world centered around Disney. Particularly the villains, who are turned into these super beautiful anime boys who are all super capable with magic but have varying degrees of trauma. They all have to go to this school for magic to become official mages, and here's where you come in: you're a random who got transported into this world via horse and carriage, and after nearly getting burned alive by this talking cat and trying to explain to the very irresponsible and weird man with the mask that you ain't from here, you are allowed to live on campus until he "finds a way" to get you back home. Oh, and the crow dude's the Headmaster of the academy, by the way.
Loh story short, he has you be a free therapist for these gorgeous but dangerous bishie boys and you get rewarded with stuff to fix the dilapidated dorm the headmaster forced allowed you to stay in. I may or may not have butchered a bit of the initial plot but I hope you understood it. Blah, blah, blah, there are cards you need to collect and or strengthen through lessons, blah, blah, blah, the more power they are the prettier the art is- OH BUT YOU CAN'T DATE THE BOYS!
....yeah, this ain't an otome(girl's dating) game. It's a visual novel, but that won't stop the characters from flirting with you at random moments. Nor will the fandom stop from making them datable. La, la, la, can't hear you over the sound of my Idia x Reader getting over 200 reads!! ಡ ͜ ʖ ಡ
Ahem.
Yeah, so this is the section for my fic. Sorry for the yap session ( ꈨຶ ˙̫̮ ꈨຶ ):

Ah, Diabolik Lovers. For many, this series needs no introduction. But for a few of you who had not known about this franchise, I'll gladly tell you.
I first learned of this through the laughably bad "anime", which had me in such a blind rage, I barely remembered it before learning it had adapted from a game of the same name,.which, while I do have my own misgivings of the initial premise (the source material is DARK with a capital D) the anime does the series a great disservice.
Not only do the boys get scrubbed clean of anything that made them interesting, save for their sadism and their desire to drink Yui(our unfortunate heroine) dry, Yui herself is not even a person. Lots of the reasons and ideas behind her character are thrown out of the window for a cheap and lazy cash grab. Same for the second season.
That being said...
I'd be lying if I said this series didn't have me in a chokehold for the LONGEST TIME.
The game art, story, and generally everything else is far superior, and, with the exception of More, Blood-

[ID 2: drawing of four non-descript characters lined up, three of them have varied brown skin and expressions while one has pale skin and a more calm smile, the characters has text pointed to them reading “that one character that gets less of the melanin because they’re passive/calm/fancier” End ID]
This and "that one character that gets darker skin because they are masculine"
(Also, a side not to consider is that there are good / pleasing designs that aren't super reliant on super high contrast. Don't get me wrong. Contrast is great and I love it but I think sometimes design gets a bit more complicated then "you always need to use the most high contrast thing possible. Obviously, don't make all your characters a single color blob but making a character I walking polkadate rainbow in the name of "contrast" wouldn't inherently be good either).
Also, it's weird that this is happening (although less frequently (even to now) but I loathe those fucking jokes where a character "can say the n-word" or "dresses up as a black character" because they have a tan now. IDK how to explain it perfectly other than the fact that they aren't even Black makes a lot of these jokes weird enough.
Just because I don't want to be solely negative here's a long stream of advice from Twitter about drawing Darker skin and stuff
Here are some bonus tips if you find people say you keep making your skin look ashy unintentionally
Here's some basic tips for hair
That's all for now. One day I will make a complete and articulated article containing all the basic advice found here and a video too but until then thanks for reading.
While descending into Tartarus Jamil offers to carry the thunder spear after it has recharged and Leona finally his patience, though he still saves Jamil from another phantom attack.
Leona explains, “You're not being thoughtful or careful. You're just bein' pushy,” and accurately evaluates Jamil as one who looks down on those around him while still being “a far cry” from the two second-year housewardens: “So what do you bring to the table?”
Jamil continues to disapprove of the way that Leona deals with the phantoms in Tartarus but gradually comes to realize that Leona’s methodology is effective, whether he likes it or not.
After some teasing Jamil, too, loses his patience, telling Leona that he has no idea what he has been through, but Leona is perceptive, as we see in a vignette where he reads Jamil’s facial expression well enough to accurately guess that Jamil has unpleasant opinions about him and even that he is a danger to Kalim.
Leona says that he knows a little about what Jamil is dealing with, and points out that Kalim’s money gives him a special form of power, as money is the greatest source of charisma there is, which Jamil has not considered.
Later Jamil asks if he is being a burden to Leona and Leona, in a moment of being more perceptive than even he might realize, asks, “Were you repressed growin' up or something?”
Leona uses Jack and Ruggie as examples of how Jamil, too, can still do better than he is (“After all, you’re not like me”), giving Jamil a lot to think about: “Is he right about me…?”
As Jamil grows tired he loses his subservient demeanor, and Leona says, “It's just you're showin' your emotions more. You're not bothering to hide your annoyance…it’s a lot better than your usual, sycophantic attitude.”
When Leona teases Jamil about giving him extra work Jamil starts to apologize and Leona responds, “You can't let some random quip destroy your self-esteem. You know better than that,” later reflecting, “I can't tell if he's thick-skinned or just the opposite.”
Adore your AU, especially the LSD dream emulator inspo in the adventures.
I’ve been wondering, do you have any ideas as to what your Caine sounds like? Is it just his og voice but more robotic and bit crushed or like a clean pre-programmed corporate-compliant conversational tone tts or something else?
First off, HOLY FAAAWWWKKK your art of Caine is AMAZING!!!! I especially love your take on his wiring AAAAHHHH!!!!! T____T
Secondly, thank you!!!! I'm glad you're enjoying the AU, I love creating for it! And it's always cool to find another LSD dream emulator fan in the wild. :D
Also, yes! I did have a TTS voice in mind for Caine, reflecting the limitations he faces in his new "body" and early computer TTS:
(I had Microsoft Sam read a couple of Caine's lines, then pitch shifted and bitcrushed the results lol)
I'm quite set on making this version of Caine feel physically unsettling and cold despite his honest intentions to execute his programming and entertain his players. A huge part of canon Caine's charm is his character design and how it allows him to emote his voice lines so expressively, so I wanted to strip that away. I also just find TTS uncanny, so I thought why not mash those ideas together.

savanaclaw light novel: the importance of introspection
I’ve previously discussed how TWST benefits from telling us the same story across different mediums. Different mediums provide different benefits over others, and some can “patch up” rougher bits of story or add more detail to them. The game is interactive and serves as a baseline for most new content. The manga is able to have far more freedom of movement and expression due to being visual-heavy. And last, but not least, a light novel, which is mostly text, has the boon of letting us see more of each character’s thoughts and feelings. We can elaborate on what the game already established and understand the characters on a deeper level.
I would say that the light novel’s format will most benefit the OB boys, as they are the ones who will go through the biggest character arcs in the main story. Because the game’s story is told via mostly dialogue and some sound effects, we rarely, if ever, get a clear understanding of what the OB boys are truly thinking and feeling outside of their brief post-OB flashbacks. The same goes for the manga, which has limited pages to tell its story, so it has to keep a certain pace. But a light novel? Well, you can go ham there with an omniscient narrator.
Today, I want to talk about Leona’s expanded post-OB introspection in the second volume of the light novel as an example of this. Then I will combine it with the information we have from the game and see how the light novel complements what already we know of his character thanks to hindsight. (I’ll be referencing this fan translation if you want to read and follow along!)
First thing’s first! From the game, we know that Leona enrolled in Night Raven College one year late (and then got held back a year, which makes sense considering he is 20 in the main story present). He didn't find a use in attending school since he, by royal birth, was able to afford all the best tutors in the world and didn't think NRC had anything left to teach him. In Leona's Birthday Boy vignettes, he further specifies that he decided to enroll at NRC after Cheka was born. As Leona says in his post-OB flashback in-game, Cheka's birth means "the despised second son loses what little claim he had to the throne forever", essentially putting an end to his hopes.
This would imply that this specific change in circumstance was the push that made Leona want to physically distance himself from home. Furthermore, it's supported by Leona's other behaviors: he does not take calls or read letters from home if he can help it (implied by Cheka asking why Leona doesn't answer his letters and Cheka calling on Halloween night to catch up with him; Leona lies and quickly hangs up), he makes excuses to avoid going home (as Kifaji states), etc. If we want to extrapolate even more, how is it that Leona, second born prince, initially crossed paths with Ruggie, who was born and raised in the slums (which, I imagine, must be quite some distance away from the royal palace)? This makes me think that even before Leona enrolled at NRC he would leave his housing and roam around, finding alternative places to stay because home just felt too uncomfortable and suffocating for him. There's also the implication that Leona often brooded over his circumstances, as he confesses to thinking about it and going to NRC to get his mind away from the tired cycle--although he also acknowledges that he's running away from "the pain" of having lost the throne.
The distancing would prove itself to be beneficial to his mental health, as Leona cites that his heart started feeling lighter, his restlessness dulled, and his pain numbed. With the throne out of sight, so, too, was it out of mind, and his longing softened. But that same haunting despair returns when another group starts to place expectations on him. This time, it's no longer the palace servants, but his own dorm members. Instead of fear and derision, his new pack looks at him, their "king", with desperateness--and, more importantly, hope. Speaking about the future with sparkling eyes. That, in turn, made Leona hopeful too. He can't let these people who look up to him and rely on him down, so he must do anything to win. That's all he ever wanted: to win, just this once. No matter what, he wants to win.
But when Leona's plans crumble, that crushing sense of despair rears its ugly head. He fails. And he suddenly understands that all his efforts will always amount to nothing, that they will always be meaningless, that there is no future for him. Leona's hopes have been dashed. He has been struck down by the world once again, just as he had started to climb up, fighting tooth and nail, to prove himself. Yet when defeat came, he also claims it doesn't bother him as much as he thought he would--perhaps because he's so accustomed to not winning, because maybe this is the outcome he had expected all along in the deepest recesses of his heart. That familiar disappointment begins to hurt him once more, and Leona wants to forget it all, to retreat to the shadows and to lick his wounds, to be far away from that pain.
One interesting new detail we glean from the light novel is that Leona is terrified by his dorm mates staring at him with hopeful eyes. It's not their expectations he's inherently scared of, but what those expectations can do to him. Leona is scared of himself, of being motivated by others to act, to never give up hope, when he still anticipates being beat down again and again by a world that rejects him and denies him. He even goes so far as to say he would be pathetic if he let his dorm mates' words inspire him and keep his waning hope alive. Ruggie, who had wanted to turn the world upside down together. Jack, who was inspired by his play three years back. All the mobs putting faith in their futures on him, their one and only leader. With so many people looking to him, how can he not be swayed by that positivity that had once been so elusive to him? How could that not ignite what little spark of hope is left in him? And that's exactly what Leona finds so dangerous about it. He's lived almost his entire life being put in his place, hurt every time he tried to demonstrate what he could do, how he could contribute--yet time and time again, here comes life, tempting him to try again, just to inevitably be compared to his brother and kicked down, delivering another blow to his pride and his self-image.
Leona truly seems to hate himself for not being able to let go of that small fragment of hope he has left. He wants so badly to give up and not have to worry anymore about something he can never obtain. He's so tired of struggling and suffering for nothing. If he just caved, then he would never be hurt again. He can't be hurt if he doesn't care about anything. Yet no matter how much he wishes or tries, he can't run far enough away to detach himself from those expectations of grandeur, of being something more.
There's been many fan theories about Leona's mental health in circulation well before the release of this light novel, many of which mention self-loathing in spite of how proud and confident he typically presents as. You'd have to read in-between the lines of dialogue from the game to draw these clues out, whereas the light novel lays it more bare to you. It hits very differently reading hateful statements made by the character to himself. Leona calls himself all sorts of things: a fool, pathetic, insignificant, boring. That he isn't strong, that he isn't wise, that he's not loved. (In the in-game flashback, Leona also talks in a self-deprecating way, but to a far lesser extent than in the light novel; we also see that Falena does his best to discourage Leona from this kind of behavior.) That this is who he is, that it's the one thing he's afraid to admit and accept--but he also says he lacks the "strength" to give up. That's why Leona would rather run away than confront that potential truth. The option to embrace complete nihilism just isn't possible for him, because he can't just quash that pesky little thing called hope.
This is much more complex than what's explained in the games and demonstrates a maturity and degree of self-reflection from Leona that we've never seen before. What's more, this gives us brand new context with which to view many of his other seemingly mundane actions mentioned in the game. At face value, Leona often acts very callously and doesn't care to help others unless he gets some kind of benefit from it (like agreeing to poof the contracts in book 3 just because he has his own deal he wants to get rid of). We see this time and time again when he instructs others reliant on him or less knowledgeable than he is in various matters where he is well-read and experienced with. For example, he takes note of his club members' strengths and weaknesses and offers tailored advice to help them improve their play. He tells others how to mine magestones of an adequate size in Vargas Camp. Maybe he's just doing these things to make the circumstances easier for himself (so he can put forth less effort to leading them in a game, or so he can nap heartily). But from what we've just learned from the light novel, now I'm suspecting a different secondary motive.
What if... Leona is, in part, encouraging and helping others to hone their own skills to subconsciously compensate for what he doesn't believe he himself is capable of? Because there's still so much hope for his dorm mates, for his underclassmen... (and, let's not forget, it was those in Savanaclaw that first motivated Leona to "try" again for the first time in forever) but he doesn't have that same amount of hope for himself. I get these vibes as late as book 6, when Leona and Jamil have a talk. In their conversation, Leona directs many pointed, blunt words at Jamil--words that could very easily also be thrown back at Leona's face and be applicable to his book 2 self. He accuses Jamil of making excuses so he won't have to actually act, just as Leona has continuously run away from uncomfortable situations to put himself at ease. At one point, I believe Leona event states that Jamil “*isn’t like [me]”, Here, again, it can be argued that we're seeing Leona's self-awareness on display, as well as a willingness to warn others to not follow down the same path he once treaded, to lose all hope in the future. Again, it's done with a double purpose: the other one being to get Jamil out of his way while they're exploring. And (of course) Leona's way of expressing his message is gruff and not very warm, not to Jamil and certainly not to himself. He's become prickly and defensive himself after all of his experiences--but that just adds to the complexity of his character when we synthesize what we know of him from TWST multimedia.
I really wish a lot of what was in the light novel post-Leona OB was also in the game. It would have helped to flesh out Leona's motivations and fears, which book 2 was sorely needing. As he is presented now, he appears shallow and selfish in his goals, and we don't fully understand the emotions spurring him on, a lot of which is genuine self-loathing and the sinking despair that comes with thinking you're not enough and you'll never be enough. That would have been so much more relatable than the in-game Leona having himself a pity party with a great amount of emphasis on the throne--a throne which, in actuality, just symbolizes a desire for recognition, love, and acceptance. It was never about explicitly being king. It was about being seen as his own person and appreciated for it instead of being admonished and compared to his exalted older brother.
Now, as an adult, Leona has become someone who pushes away those who try to give him that which he craves. He sees a lot of people--his own family and his dorm mates, the closest thing he has to friends--as dangers to his own mental wellbeing. He's scared to let them in, so he's built up these emotional, arrogant walls around himself. Think at how often he rejects advice from Falena and refuses Cheka's affection for him. Look at how this behavior extends beyond those who are keeping him from a literal throne and to his classmates. They instill hope in him, hope which scares Leona. The things he has wanted all his life are now poison that chips away at him.
Considering all of that together, it makes Leona's story far more tragic than how it was initially shown to us in the game alone. But guess what? That can also become his strength, fuel for his character arc. Leona isn't running anymore. He's actually returning home for winter break in book 4. He's determined to not get held back again. He's committing to an internship in a field (an energy lab) which will immensely help his country (which is rich in natural resources). All of this, coming from a young man who once acted bitter when his older brother suggested that there were many things Leona could do with his intelligence to benefit their homeland. Leona is making slow strides and steady progress toward a future he used to think was unattainable for him. From that darkness, he's rising anew--like the sun upon the savanna.
I love when people ask "how did you learn this skill?" I just started, there's no secret. that's it. a vast majority of the time the only thing holding you back is your trepidation to start.
AKA me wishing Leona was more of a competent and conniving bastard in his own chapter so I can actually simp for his big brain—
Okay. So I think most of us can agree that chapter 2 was rocky. At the very least, I feel as though it’s the most universally disliked chapter of what has been released of the main story thus far. There’s a lot of plot holes or just plain disappointment with Leona’s lack of active involvement in the story.
In this essay post, I’m going to propose some ways to fix common grievances people (including myself) have with chapter 2. By no means am I saying that these suggestions will fix all of the problems, or that my writing is necessarily better than what we got, it’s just me exploring the possibilities of what chapter 2 could have been.
***Chapter 2 spoilers! (… and some mild chapter 3 spoilers!)***
Please note that most of the major plot beats will be the same, and I’ll just point out places where there will be major deviations from the current chapter 2.
There will still be an upcoming Magift Tournament, and Savanaclaw + Leona are still planning on sabotaging Diasomnia. Crowley will still ask Yuu, Grim, and Adeuce to investigate strange occurrences that are harming players around NRC. They’ll still have Riddle and Cater help them investigate the culprit, and they’ll meet Jack along the way. Leona will still OB at the end, and we’ll still get Cheka’s cameo, all that good stuff.
I read your rewrite of Chapter 2 (which was great, by the way) and would like to clarify some things. Of course, you wrote that the fixes were just you exploring possibilities, so you don't need to justify anything if you don't want to.
1. How would Leona join the investigation? Correct me if I am wrong, but Leona didn't seem to know about Yuu and co. until Riddle and Qater confronted Ruggie. For him to know about them so soon, someone (like an injured Savanaclaw student or a Savanaclaw student who overheard Yuu and co. questioning others) would need to let him know. Even then, would he be able to join without looking suspicious?
2. How does Leona plan to frame Diasomnia and get it to stick? He can point fingers all he wants and use the circumstantial evidence they gather to prove it, but Diasomnia has no reason to sabotage others when they have Malleus. Leona would most likely be aware of Crowley's biases, so is he just hoping casting enough suspicion would force Crowley's hand? Does he intend to convince students from other dorms to demand their disqualification despite the lack of motive?
[Referencing this post!]
Wow, people are still reading that?? 😭
As I said in the original post, my book 2 rewrite was more of a compilation of shower thoughts without much care given to fleshing out the finer details. It is by no means perfect, nor is it meant to cover everything.
There’s enough wiggle room left for various different interpretations using my book 2 rewrite as a basis. It’s meant to be flexible!
Just for fun, here are my thoughts:
To your first point, I don’t think Leona would come off as suspicious if his introduction was framed a certain way (which I’m sure he could plan around). Yuu and co. would be investigating all the dorms (since they’re all suspects), which includes Savanaclaw students. Leona could easily hear it from Savanaclaw mobs and then reintroduce himself to the group, claiming he also wants in on the investigation to seek justice for his injured students. Since Riddle is already investigating with Yuu, Leona could easily use that to distract from his true intentions. He would come off as just another pissed dorm leader trying to stand up for and avenge his dorm members. (And if we really want to get technical, we could reason the other dorm leaders are not getting involved due to other reasons, like Azul being busy with the inter-dorm event organization, Jamil not trusting anyone with Kalim but himself, Vil preoccupied with his professional gigs, Idia being Idia, and no one knowing where the heck Malleus has wandered off to now.)
To your second point, I think Leona definitely has the capacity to trick/manipulate other students into believing Diasomnia is responsible. He could set up situations which incriminate certain Diasomnia students (based on their unique skillsets), then leave the other dorms’ students to come to their own (false) conclusions based on that. Obviously, it would look too suspicious if he and Savanaclaw students are the only ones pointing fingers, so he has to convince the others to parrot the rhetoric he wants them to. If it was done this way, we achieve many things: 1) Leona comes off as way more intelligent than in the original book 2, 2) it sets up more parallels between him and Jamil (who also tried to get a lot of people to side with him under false pretenses to convince someone of higher authority to change their mind) for delicious book 6 payoff, and 3) it adds to the sense of betrayal the other students experience at the end when it turns out Leona deceived them.
Something I feel that the main story fails to do well is to define the rivalries between each dorm. It’s only mentioned a few times off-handedly, like how Octavinelle and Scarabia students are intelligent and are thus always neck and neck in terms of grades. In my revised book 2, an opportunity arises to utilize this untapped potential. Think about it: what if the other dorm members are more likely to suspect Diasomnia because the main story calls more attention to how the dorms do NOT get along with each other?? Diasomnia is described to us as a place where skilled all-around mages go, and this has resulted in the Diasomnia students being more arrogant than your average NRC student (which by itself is already very arrogant). From that point of view, it’s not too hard to believe that the other students could think Diasomnia is injuring other students “just because they can”. They’ve grown too arrogant and think they can get away with doing whatever they want because they won’t face the consequences of their actions. (Malleus himself is THE poster child of that across multiple events and vignettes too.) There doesn’t necessarily need to be a motive in the traditional sense; people could suspect that Diasomnia has gotten too high and mighty, so they are conceited and feel entitled to doing whatever the hell they want. It would be a perfect way for Leona to weaponize the preexisting animosity and pride of the NRC students against them. The injured students would then feel slighted because Diasomnia are being held up as the metaphorical “golden children” (despite their theoretical unethical behavior) while their suffering is looked over. These feelings ironically also parallel how Scar feels cheated of the throne because of his careless older brother and son, or even how the hyenas are not seen as part of the Pridelands.
