Beginning with Riddle:

The way Riddle refers to his mother can vary: in a flashback we see that he would refer to her as "Mama" when he was younger, but in a later scene he uses the "-sama" honorific, saying, "Mother-sama." (okaa-sama)

In the aftermath of his overblot, however, he again refers to her as "Mama."

While asleep in his dream world of Book 7 Riddle again says "Mama," returning to "Mother-sama" after he wakes up.

Riddle's mother also refers to herself as "Mama" in Riddle's dream, while in a flashback we see that she, too, refers to herself as "Mother-sama" when speaking to Riddle.

When speaking about his mother to others Riddle will usually use "haha" for "mom," a standard way to refer to one's mother in Japanese when you are speaking to outsiders.

Riddle uses "Mother-sama" immediately preceding his overblot, and when speaking with Trey in Book 4.

🐬 says the he and 🦦 met for the first time through golf, unconnected to work.

🦦 is talking about how 🐬 is a very good person and a wonderful senpai.

Now they are talking about eating tasty food last night, there was a dinner together with the team ♪ 🐬 says 🦦 was wagging his tail so much, saying he was so hungry.

Q: What is your "oshi-point" for the character you voice? I think it has probably changed since the beginning and would love to hear about it!

🦦: Kalim is always a good guy and I like that but as the story continues he struggles and he is learning a variety of things like what people don’t like, and the way he is growing as a person is what I like about Kalim.

🐬: What I have come to like about Jade is how is smile is scary, for a variety of reasons. When he smiles you know something not good happening, or like…you know something is up. I didn’t see him as someone who would occupy such a distinctive role, so when the siblings…(making a lot of punching gestures, possibly in reference to Book 7 and his fight with Floyd). That was a first, right? That kind of unexpectedness is there too, so his smile can hold a lot of meaning that it didn’t before. For me, that is my oshi-point for him right now. The depth of his smile has changed.

Q: If you were to celebrate a character's birthday, which character would you choose, and what kind of special treatment/hospitality would you prepare for them?

🐬: With Malleus. I love Malleus. I want to go to a hat shop with him. I want to walk in and up to the shop person and ask “any hats that would suit him?” Something to do with fashion.

🦦: I want to go with Kalim. When celebrities comes to Japan, they seem to like chain restaurants and convenience store chicken. I think he might like it if I took him to a chain restaurant. He’s probably never ordered his own food before, he just sits down and food is brought out to him. I bet he’d enjoy anything.

Q: What if Jade and Kalim came to Kansai?

🐬: He would eat. I think Jade would be fine as long as he doesn't see any mushrooms. The twins are so tall they would stand out, maybe people would take their pictures and post to social media.

🦦: If there was an SR Kalim card for an Osaka event, he would be eating takoyaki in his card art.

🦦 read a potential home voice line: "They say these are called takoyaki! They're round and roll, so cute. There are many different flavors, so just I bought them all. I have a lot, so would you like some?"

🐬: Did you make that up?

🦦: Yes. That is very unofficial.

Q: Any memories to share from recording?

🐬: When I first got the script I thought “What…are we doing here.” I called the advisor and they explained it to me, and I was like "Woah." And practice was hard. We can't just do whatever we want, of course, so while conferring with the team together we worked it out, and that really left an impression on me.

🦦 is talking about recording for the new card. He says it will make people go, "Oh, if Kalim were in this situation, this is what he would do!," and encourages everyone to watch it.

Last question: What club would you join?

🦦: Basketball. I did basketball in high school but I never understood how to play. The whole time, for years. I would get called out for traveling but I didn’t understand what they were talking about.

🐬: Jade is lonely in the Mountain Lovers Club by himself so I would join him.

Now they are doing closing greeting, 🦦 talking about how grateful he is to be here and for the team and for the amazing team that Twst has put together.

🐬: Being able to come to events like this is wonderful, everyone’s passion is reaching us and we will continue to do our best and thank you very much to everyone.

Azul has multiple lines about never relying on chance or luck, which is the focus of a boardgame club vignette where he refuses to play a dice-based game with Idia, saying, “I’m not particularly fond of games that hinge primarily on luck. There’s nothing to be gained by crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.”

Idia teases him with, “Not even a guy with your intellect can compete against luck. Can’t brain your way into making dice do your bidding, right?,” but that is exactly what Azul then proceeds to do, practicing his dice rolling so that he will be able to roll the number that he wants.

Azul explains, “If I can reduce the amount of luck involved, then I can control even a game of dice through sheer willpower!”

During Tsumsted Azul observes that his tsum uses “a dice-rolling technique to produce consistent sixes,” possibly in a way similar to how Azul teaches himself to control his rolls.

During Glorious Masquerade Azul says that he does not believe in leaving things to chance, and when Deuce asks what the difference is between chance and luck Azul explains, “there’s a world of difference between simply hoping for providence while doing nothing and covering every possible base.”

When Sebek loses a game of rock, paper, scissors with Grim for the right to share a table with Malleus during the event, Azul observes, “That’s what you get for leaving your fate up to chance. If you don’t want to lose, you should be better prepared.”

When deciding who will receive the honor of accompanying him to the Fairest City during the Tapis Rouge event, Vil tells a crowd of hopefuls that he will only take the best of the best, and they are to prove themselves by defeating their rivals.

Azul suggests a lottery, securing participation for himself, Jamil and Ace. Afterwards Jamil points out that “someone as calculating as Azul” would never leave things to chance, and we learn what he did: suggest the lottery and have Jamil second the motion (Azul: “But naturally if someone from my dorm spoke up, like Jade or Floyd, it would be suspicious. I reasoned that Jamil, being from another dorm, had the best chance of persuading the others.”).

Jack makes the connection that Azul is “a law-abiding sorta guy” (the drama of Book 3 centers on a lack of “any legal way” for Azul to dispose of a photo of himself), which might be is connection to his lawyer stepfather: Azul explains, “He often shares his insights about contracts and the law with me.”

Azul says, “I admire him greatly,” and in Book 7 we discover that Azul refers to his stepfather as “papa,” so it is possible that they are close.

There are many examples of Azul using phrasing that seems to insinuate a particular familiarity with the law, possibly displaying his stepfather’s influence. In Book 4, he infiltrates Scarabia despite Jamil’s protests under the guise of wanted to return Kalim’s magic carpet in person, saying, “If it were discovered to be damaged later, Octavinelle would be held liable.”

During the NBC event Azul insists on chasing after Riddle, who is chasing after Lock, insisting that he listen to a poem in accordance with the Queen of Hearts’ laws. Azul explains, “If Riddle flies off the handle and does any harm to that child, all of us could get sued by their guardian!”

Later on Azul reluctantly eats soup provided by Sally with the comment, “If I get food poisoning from this, I’ll be making a claim with my traveler’s insurance, separate world or not,” and during the Stitch event Azul says, “Even after deducting the cost of destroying a spaceship, we still have plenty to file a damages claim against him.”

Azul drafts a business plan for Port Fest that uses Vil’s name recognition and the strength of his brand in order to boost both the prices of their product and of sales.

Vil says, “Typically, a business needs to sign a sponsorship contract to use my name to sell a product. My agent has a whole formal procedure for it-and | can’t unilaterally change it.”

Azul explains, “And I have no intention of running afoul of that policy. You just happened to be standing by our salad cup stand. That’s all, a mere coincidence of your presence, entirely by chance.”

Vil responds, “You love doing business in these little gray areas, don’t you?”

When confronted during Book 3, Azul argues that his 225 anemone’d servants are not being forced to labor under any undue duress: “They made a contract with me, and they willingly consented to the terms laid out in writing. Contracts are ironclad agreements not subject to intervention from outside parties on any emotional basis.”

in your azul’s family facts part four, azul mentions that during winter break, the octavinelle trio don’t go home due to the ice. he mentions that its just him, jade, and floyd, all alone at the dorm. does that mean there aren’t any other mermaids in octavinelle/nrc in general? because if there were, i assume they wouldn’t be able to go home either because of the ice, so they’d also have to be at the school.

You are very much correct! Azul confirms in Book 3 that he, Jade and Floyd are alone in Octavinelle during Winter Break, saying, "Back to spending yet another holiday stuck indoors in the dead of winter, just the three of us."

But that maybe does not technically mean that they are the only mermaids :>

There is a large expanse of ocean visible in the map that we have received for Twst. Azul, Jade and Floyd have specified that they are from "the far northern reaches of the Coral Sea," which is why it is so cold, but what about the far eastern reaches? Or the southern? Are there mermaids in warmer climates that do not freeze over in winter, enabling them to go home for the holidays? :> We do not know!

In Book 3 Azul says "Mermaids like myself with octopus legs are unusual in this area," which is interesting phrasing 🐙 Are there other areas in the ocean where octopus mermaids are more common and he would not stand out? Or are they more often found in a different ocean entirely? Did Azul's family migrate from somewhere else originally, or have they always lived there?

NRC's students come from all over the Twst map (and some from off the map, in the case of Kalim, Jamil and Sam), so it seems maybe possible for mermaids to attend from places other than the same location as Azul, Jade and Floyd, maybe! 🧜

But also important to note: Just as Diasomnia is the only dorm with confirmed fae characters and that does not mean that there are any other fae besides Malleus, Lilia and Sebek, Octavinelle being the only dorm with confirmed mermaid characters also does not mean that there are any other mermaids besides Azul, Jade and Floyd!

We have received no hint or insinuation or confirmation anywhere within the game, manga, anime or novels that there are any other mermaids at NRC at all besides the three we know by name, just like it is not confirmed that there are any fae at Diasomnia besides Malleus, Lilia and Sebek :>

Is each trio surrounded entirely by humans? Maybe! Are there other fae in Diasomnia, and/or other mermaids in Octavinelle? Maybe! Could there be fae in Savanaclaw or mermaids in Heartslabyul, or in any of the other dorms, much in the same way that there seem to be beast-people outside of Savanaclaw? Maybe! ^^

Azul uses his unique magic in Book 7 in order to defeat the mermaid of darkness populating his dream.

It is a little unclear if Azul actually uses his unique magic on the prefect in Book 3: while the prefect does sign a contract Azul does not invoke his spell, and he also does not remove a talent or power from the prefect as collateral, possibly rendering the spell unnecessary.

We see this in a similarly vague situation with Vil, where Azul has Vil sign a contract and provide him with poisonous plants in exchange for a moisturizer, but he does not take a talent/magical power and never invokes his spell, so his unique magic was possibly not used.

During Glorious Masquerade, Jamil teases Azul by saying, “I doubt a certain someone could get plants to sign a contract for his signature spell” in order for Azul to be able to use his UM on the firelotuses, but as we see in Book 3 Azul does not actually need anyone to sign anything at all: his UM can be used without his target’s consent.

Whether or not this means that Azul could take “abilities” from things like plants if he so chose is maybe unclear.

Azul uses his unique magic on 225 students in Book 3, fighting off his unhappy contractees with multiple kinds of magics that were possibly the same spells he took from the contractees themselves.

The contracts seem to “deflect” any attacks angled for them, with Azul claiming that “an official contract is completely unbreakable, regardless of how many bodies you throw at it” and “No magic can harm this document in any way.”

Leona’s response to hearing about the situation, however, is to shred the contracts, with Ruggie pointing out that Azul possibly provided the “on-the-spot demonstration” of “invulnerability” as a bluff.

Jack’s group sneaks into Azul’s VIP room to try and destroy a contract that Azul leaves out on his desk, but it electrocutes them.

Azul claims that the contracts are “rigged to jolt anyone who touches them aside from (himself),” but this is proven to be a lie: based on the logic that Azul would not need to keep the contracts in a vault if they were untouchable, Leona and Ruggie attempt and succeed at smuggling Azul’s entire collection out of Octavinelle.

Leona guesses that the contracts were “impervious to damage only under specific conditions. Namely, either being in the VIP room, or being in (Azul’s) hands.”

Epel! Initially, he was a character with thick glasses who aspired to be in showbiz. (source)

At first several characters besides Epel had eyewear, but we decided to remove them from the types that seemed likely to break them due to their quarrelsome nature. F4-san even asked, ‘Should we change the size of the eyes based on the glasses?’ which was a surprising level of attention to detail! After discussions, it was decided not to change them (memories) (source) Voice actors mentioned on the radio that there are surprisingly few characters with glasses, but in classic Disney works it’s common for characters on the hero side to wear glasses. Leona originally says that Azul’s unique magic “enables the caster to take one power from a target if that target signs the scroll,” but later in Book 3 he realizes he was wrong: Azul’s UM “sucks EVERY power out of someone if it’s not channeled through a contract,” with the contracts “acting “like a filter that limits his magic’s effects,” as Azul’s own unique magic is too powerful for him to control, as confirmed by Jade.

Leona refers to it as “taboo magic” that compels those who breach his contracts to obey Azul’s every command, and when he takes power(s) from a contractee they become available for Azul to use as he pleases.

Jack says “that means he’s cheating at everything,” but Ruggie says Azul isn’t cheating: his unique magic is simply, “crazy high-level.”

While the English-language adaptation of the game generally uses the word “power” to describe what it is that Azul takes, the original word is 「能力」, which is closer to “ability.” In addition to taking magic Azul also takes someone’s athletic ability in the lead-up to his overblot, for example: his unique magic is not limited to use on mages.

It seems that Azul taking all the abilities and/or powers out of a person causes them to collapse.

Unlike other unique magics that we have heard of, it seems that Azul intentionally designed his UM in order to enact revenge on people who bullied him.

What might be the earliest results of Azul’s unique magic are described by middle-school Jade and Floyd, who talk about a mermaid losing weight and getting a girlfriend but losing their “fine tenor,” and another getting “silky-smooth, gorgeous blonde” hair but losing “the big tailfin they used to dart through the water.”

Azul uses his unique magic in Book 4, granting Floyd a deep voice in exchange for Floyd’s own unique magic, that he uses to thwart Jamil.

“It’s a Deal” comes up again during Glorious Masquerade when Deuce injures himself saving Idia from a falling chandelier. Azul says, “Normally l’d hold off on doing this, but since we’re not on campus…” and receives Deuce’s unique magic, “Bet the Limit,” in exchange for the promise to “hit (Rollo) where it hurts.”

Twisted Wonderland Artbook Tracker has been updated:

Ruggie's "Least Favorite Food" in his profile is listed as "anything rotten," and he also has voice lines about being willing to eat anything, as long as it isn't rotten.

Ruggie grew up with food scarcity back home (more here ▶︎ ) and it seems possible that his dislike of rotten food might have come from situations where it was all he had (not officially confirmed).

Ruggie: "Back in my hometown I was always looking for something to eat. Weeds and that sort of thing."

Ruggie has a comment in Book 2 on EN of Azul's potion tasting like "stew someone aged in gym sock," adding a light-hearted twist to his actual dialogue of, "Tastes like rotten stew!," and Ruggie's "rotten stew" comment was also altered in the English-language translation of the novel ("old stew simmered in a gym sock").

When asked how he spends his days off Azul responds, “I get up early and make myself a drink of whatever suits my fancy that day, and then I often read business journals and newspapers, or check the news, or read about current trends.”

Jack asks how he can relax when “stuffing so much info into (his) brain” and Azul says, “It’s a favorite pastime of mine. Besides, it’s become such an ingrained part of my routine, it would actually be more off-putting if I spent the day lazing around in bed.”

It seems that Azul might be hurrying to try as many new things as he can before graduation, saying, “I need to do whatever I can to raise my valuation as much as possible before I make my way out into the world. So I can’t afford to be afraid of a little work. I have to try everything I can while there’s still time.”

Azul says “It’s important to make efficient use of one’s time” and he prizes efficiency above all else, and we get an example of this in his fifth birthday vignette: while working on “rather challenging magic analysis homework” he plays the radio in the background and turns on a movie, simultaneously, commenting on recent business happenings in the Queendom of Roses and the Shaftlands (from the radio show) and watching the movie to use it as a conversation topic with a manager he met at a seminar.

Azul declares that he will be finding “some way to loosen school regulations on excursions and work more plans into (his) weekends” so that he can “attend as many social gatherings as possible to expand (his) network even further.”

Azul seems to appreciate public transportation, saying, “The greatest benefit, of course, is allowing me to make more efficient use of my time. I can spend a ride collecting information, checking my email, studying, reading…what more could I ask for?”

Azul is displeased when he joins Rook in Fleur City, only for Rook to take a “spontaneous stroll” with no destination: “All this valuable time, just wasted. I could’ve been seeing so many other places…”

One of Azul’s issues with Riddle’s approach to Tartarus is his poor use of their time, saying, “When trying to score well on a test, it’s more efficient to look over the whole thing and start with the problems that are worth the most points.”

Riddle disagrees, saying that “in the time you spend choosing the problems, you could’ve just solved the first one and had more time for the rest,” shocking Azul with the revelation that Riddle starts his tests with the first question (Riddle; “Of course. I get perfect marks no matter where I start” – Azul: “So you and I have a fundamentally different outlook. No wonder we’re clashing so much”).

Chapter 12 (pt3)

Original Novel: "Really…?" Grim narrows his eyes. Behind him, Leona, Ruggie, Jack, and even Riddle are glaring at the headmage. 'Yes, absolutely. After all, it's the match that will open the event..."

EN Novel: "'Really?' Grim said suspiciously. 'B-but of course.' Crowley bobbed his head up and down. 'This game would launch the tournament...'"

Original Novel: "The thought that Deuce is being sincere makes Yuuya happy. If Ace is being sincere, all Yuuya can do is laugh, because it is so much like the two of them. Sincere or not, their reasoning does not matter much to Yuuya. What matter is that they are offering their help, and Grim is going to be able to join the tournament. There is nothing that could make Yuuya happier than the the members of the group that is always together being able to play together as well. Watching Ace and Deuce chat soexcitedly with Grim makes Yuuya’s heart feel light. He hopes, from the bottom of his heart, that the match will be fun not just for Grim, but for the two of them as well."

EN Novel: "Yuya was glad, whatever their motivations, that Ace and Deuce wanted to help Grim so he could play in the tournament. Yuya knew Ace and Deuce were also dying to play, and he couldn't think of anything better than all his friends taking to the field together. As Ace and Deuce talked excitedly with Grim, Yuya felt his own spirits lift. A swell of gratitude rose from the bottom of his heart to have such wonderful friends."

Original Novel: "He hates competing against other teams--other people."

EN Novel: "He hated competition, which was too much like fighting."

Across the manga, anime and novels, Crowley never refers to the prefect as anything except "Yuu-kun." The English-language adaptations can vary, however, with Crowley once saying "Ms. Hirasaka" during the Savanaclaw manga arc, and saying "Yuya" once in the Savanaclaw novel.

Added to the EN Novel: "Ace said, throwing an arm around his shoulder."

(Canonically, Ace has never had such familiar physical contact with Yuuya.)

Original Novel: "Now it is Yuuya who is on the receiving end of disapproving stares. He tries to push back, but he is outnumbered, and in the end finds himself having been made a member of the team."

EN Novel: "They needed him, and so he agreed to be the seventh member of the team."

The revelation that Azul has been trying to beat his grades at school surprises Riddle, who explains that Azul is invested in too many things simultaneously to truly compete with him:

“Not only do you run the Mostro Lounge, but you also have your stock investments and such. And I hear you’re still doing your backroom ‘consultations’ as well. Jade’s also mentioned you often leave campus on your days off under the pretense of market research. Not to mention, I’ve seen your exam study guides when l’ve confiscated them from my dorm’s students. Helping so many other people must take a considerable chunk out of your own study time. You might get perfect scores on tests if you gave your studies your full attention. But you don’t. You spend your valuable time and knowledge doing analysis and crafting guides that help others get better grades.”

During Book 6 Riddle and Azul guess that the “nightmarish situation” at STYX is reality for Idia and Ortho, while their life at school is more like a dream. When asked if he is upset by the thought that crushing their dreams is he only way to get their own reality back Azul responds,

“One has to make sacrifices to make their dreams a reality…I have many dreams, and I’m not going to give up on any of them. Being valedictorian. Opening a second Mostro Lounge branch. Starting a delivery business. Selling tableware. Running a hotel. Getting into the leisure industry…”

When told he has a wide range of hobbies Azul responds, “Of course. You never know when something will come in handy for business further down the line. There’s no such thing as a wasted experience.” 

We see an example of some of Azul’s various talents in Book 3, where he proves himself a talented singer, capable of both understanding and speaking animal languages, and formulating a potion that appears on third-year final exams.

Yana is credited sometimes with direction, sometimes with both costume design and direction, and--just once--with styling 🦁

During Beanfest Azul recommends a tactical retreat from Vil’s group after Vil calls for “more distance” from their enemy (Azul’s group), saying, that Vil seems to be trying to lure them into a trap: “He could very well be bluffing, but we’ve had two instances of unexpected interference already. I say we play it safe.”

Vil responds,

“I knew he’d think twice. It was purely a bluff on my part, but luckily for me, Azul is a cautious man by nature. Yet the fact that it was a bluff was largely apparent to him regardless. My acting, convincing as it is, didn’t work on him. I suppose his wariness can also be to our disadvantage.”

While reviewing paperwork for the interdorm spelldrive tournament of Book 2 Riddle reflects, “Why am I not surprised Azul wrote this? He’s outlined so many rules that merely READING them is tedious…and that’s coming from me.”

When presented with an NDA during the Tapis Rouge event Azul declares, “Documents like this must be read thoroughly before one signs” and reads through the entirety of the paperwork with which they have been presented, asking questions and then rereading from the beginning.

Jamil says, “Even I’d consider that excessively cautious.”
