Hello friends, I am Yasmin from northern Gaza Strip. I am 27 years old, a mother of two children, Sila and Youssef, and I have been married for more than 7 years.
I was studying Journalism and Media at the University College, and I had both a home and a job. But because of the war, I lost my home, my work, and everything I owned.
My family’s house was also destroyed, and now we have nothing left except a worn-out tent whose torn walls cannot protect us from the heat of summer or the cold of winter.
My husband is injured. He was involved in a traffic accident while trying to get aid, and he is now disabled and unable to work.
My children have suffered from malnutrition due to the lack of food and proper nutrition.

This will be a quick bullet point list of all the moments I noticed that could link to the themes of poverty/underprivilege in Haikyuu. This will only cover s1-s3 and No ova s. Purely based on the anime as I didnt have time to cross check with the manga but I probably will at some point and maybe tweak things. Feel free to add in the comments anything I've missed or better yet, make your own list! Id love to read what others picked up on that I missed.
Season 1 & 2
Hinata's school had no male volleyball (VB) men's team.
Karasuno has no coach and their gym is very basic ;Nekoma, despite being in a 'similar position' to them still has two coaches, matching uniforms, and a gym (seen in s4)
Karasuno's basic training/practice matches all exist due to individual efforts rather than a supported system that maintains it.
In the first official match, we see the Karasuno girl's team lose. Unlike the boy's team, they had no coach, no seen teacher supervisor, and most players lacked the discipline for VB. The girls VB team could be a reflection of what the boys VB team would have been had they lived in their circumstances and had no individual support (Takeda).
Karasuno's first opponent, despite also being no powerhouse, still has matching shoes/bags etc. Karasuno only provides the most basic uniform.
Their coach is someone who 'volunteered' to be there and has to work two jobs to make time for this. School does not have enough staff for every club.
Ushijima's speech highlights the idea that 'only a good environment can truly make something special flourish'. Although a good environment can significantly boost one's growth, dismissing those who aren't from 'perfect soil' is a narrow mindset that stems from privilege. You can definitely also look at this speech from a biological point of view as it highlights the flaw in this idea even more. In nature, the 'weeds' still have their purpose and biodiversity is important to ecological strength, people just dismiss this due to their own bias. (This argument isnt fully scientifically sound but please let it slide to any agricultural pro s reading this!).
Shiratorizawa's building and facilities contrast directly to Karasuno's own, limited training area.
Karasuno seems to have a limited amount of coaches (Maybe even just the one) for their players. Yachi has to make a poster to help fundraise.
The other schools are also shown to have larger/more VB gyms than karasuno.
Season 3
Shiratorizawa are used to nationals
They have their own cheer squad
Karasuno's cheer seems to be made? Last minute, in comparison Shiratorizawa students all seem to know what cheers to do when, and they have a 'school song' of sorts.
Shiratorizawa means white swan, but their symbol seems to a white eagle. Either way, both birds highlight power, grace, and a sense of superiority compared to the scrappiness of Karasuno's crows.
End credits show family members and community members (Saeko, Shimada, Takinoue) gathering money during their jobs to send the boys to nationals.
I ended up having the least to say about season 3 since its purely focused on a match (and since I forgot to take notes) so this will most certainly be added to later. However, despite their being less non-Vb related material, the symbolism of crows vs eagles throughout the match, and Karasuno winning, contributes greatly and consistently to the theme of poverty. Id like to talk about Miyagi prefecture and Sendai City, but im unfortunately not a pro at economics and can't tell if Karasuno is just a reflection of a less funded school, or its a broader thing.
