In fall 2018, in my role on the Data Team at The UT Austin University  Writing Center I began working with the software NVivo 12 to practice isolating patterns in specific large texts for in preparation for a sentimental analysis project that would be continued in the Spring 2019 academic semester. The case study text here, I believe, was Anne Burdick’s Digital_Humanities, because that was the first text I saw on my hard drive at the time. What does this image show about the text? Or, rather, about the section of the test I ran through my first time using NVivo without looking at the instructions?
I have no freakin’ idea. I screenshot it because it looks cool and screams “future edited volume cover” to me.Â

During the 2017-2018 academic year, my Flash Fellowship project for the Digital Writing and Research Lab at UT Austin was to examine the rhetorical construction of the concept “bots” as a political cultural artifact over the paper’s history with specific attention to the politicization of “the bot” in discourse preceding and following the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. First, I archived every article published in The New York Times containing the term “bot” on a single digital platform and manually input relevant metadata (article column, date, online only vs print, etc). Then, using the text-mining tool Overviewdocs, I identified chronological patterns in the term’s changing definitions, context, and frequency of use.Â

Week Ten: Hello and welcome back to the LGBT+ Masterlist Project!
Today I bring you a whole playlist of LGBT+ history specific YouTube videos, resources for further research, a chronological outline of world LGBT+ history, and a variety of academic journals and articles. Much of the credit for the list goes out to Fordham University, which has an online database full of great resources. Albeit published in 1997 (the online version was last updated over six years ago), Fordham’s database serves so much use to LGBT+ people trying to build an understanding of their community and scholars alike. I have also added many links to journals and articles that were not originally mentioned in Fordham’s database.
Researching LGBT+ history was actually a very hopeful experience for me! To see so much documentation on our history was good. It really gives our educators and the media we consume no excuse to gloss over and - because they do this more often than not - ignore such rich history.  So use these references for school, for your own personal gain - it doesn’t really matter. Just don’t forget our history. Don’t forget that we were always here.Â
As always, I’m here for constructive criticism. If you feel like I’ve referenced or used resources that are harmful (that’s like, gratuitous use of homophobic slurs like h*m*sexual or q*eer, or the use of transphobic or anti-sex work rhetoric - a lot of these resources are dated so it is very likely that these things come up,) please to let me know if you recognize it. I want my masterlists to be a safe place for all of us, so I encourage y’all to call me out if I’ve given a spotlight to someone/something that simply does not deserve it.
