A few days later, Fox stood in front of the shop. He looked at the cheerful window display and nodded at a few people walking by on the sidewalk. He pushed open the door and walked in, his eyes taking in the few customers shopping before landing on her. She was up a ladder, grabbing something off a shelf. He took a moment to appreciate the way her pants hugged her hips and watched as she carefully made her way back down.
Kyla turned and noticed him. She walked towards him with a warm smile “Commander, how can I help you?”
“I’m not sure. I tried your tea.” He said, looking around at the shelves.
“And? How is it going?” she asked
He shrugged. “I’m still drinking caf, but I started making a few cups of your tea too. It's not quite the same, but it's alright. I’m still tired.”
“Are you still not sleeping?” she asked
“I sleep. On occasion.” Fox said, grinning under his helmet at the look on her face.
She sighed. “Well obviously all the caf is part of the problem, but why else can’t you sleep? Is your brain racing? Are you unable to relax and get comfortable? What is the primary issue?”
He leaned against a shelf and thought for a moment. “Mostly my brain racing. I can’t shut it off. Its just full of thoughts from work. Reports that are due, areas we need to patrol more. Things like that. Plus the occasional nightmare too.”
Kyla nodded “That doesn’t surprise me, given all you see and do.”
He shrugged a shoulder. “I just do my best to power through on the caf every day.”
She made a sympathetic noise. “Stress and anxiety are common in soldiers. Lets see what we can do to assist you, even if it is just a tiny bit.”
He nodded and followed her to another shelf. “I don’t know why they don’t offer you all therapy or something to help you” she said as she looked for a bottle.
“Most of us wouldn’t have time to talk to a therapist.” He replied.
She sighed and pulled a bottle from the shelf. “Right, I forget that time off is a luxury. This herb is one that helps reduce anxiety. People often find it helps quiet the mind a bit. Paired with some of the calming sleep tea it may help you settle enough to relax at night.”
He took the bottle and looked at it. “Its just a herb?”
She stepped closer and rotated the bottle to show him the ingredient list. “It’s a combination of a few actually, but you can look them up in the medical data base if you like or ask a medical droid about them before taking them. Which is really what you should do before taking anything, but I know not everyone does.”
She looked up at him. “I feel like you would be responsible and check it out before you tried something."
He laughed. “Maybe, but I’ll give this and your other tea you mentioned a try. If it doesn’t work I’m going back to my caf though.”
“Or you could come back and we can try something else” She said.
He smirked under his helm as he looked down at her. “What other things did you have in mind?”
“Well, there are other teas to try, or you could try massage. We do offer those as well” She smiled up at him.
He raised his eyebrows, intrigued by her offer. “A massage? Sounds like you might be trying to lure me back here.”
She laughed softly “Isn’t that what all shopkeepers do? Try to get return customers?”
He chuckled “I suppose so. I’ll think about the massage offer."
She nodded and gestured for him to follow as she headed to the till. “Do think about it. Massage is great for many things. And try to cut down on the caf. I know its not easy. Make sure to drink more water to help with the headaches.”
He followed her to the till and leaned on the counter as he pulled out some credits. “I will think about it. I never got your name though.”
“Oh, sorry. I’m Kyla. It's nice to meet you Commander."
He nodded. “Just Fox will do.”
“Alright Fox, please try to stop drinking so much caf or I might be moved to drastic measures for your health” She smiled playfully as she made the threat.
“You know, the caf vendors might not appreciate your campaign to get me off of it.” He said as he tucked the bag into one of his pouches.
“Well, I’m sure I will win them over. People love me.” Kyla gave him a confident grin as she spoke.
“Do they?” he asked.
“Yes, they do. And if you come back for a massage I bet you will too."
“Well, I suppose I’ll have to think about that then. For now, I’ll try your advice. Have a good night Kyla” He nodded and turned to walk out.
She watched him leave and let out a little sigh. He definitely wore his armor well. She shook her head and turned to get back to stocking shelves, sure she wouldn’t see him again.
Days pass and Kyla kept herself busy with the shop. She pondered occasionally if Fox was actually feeling better or if he just gave up and continued to drink obscene amounts of caf. She tapped her fingers on the counter and went back to her closing duties. As she was walking to the front to lock the door, it opened and Fox stepped in. “You still open?” he asked.
She smiled. “I was just getting ready to close up, but I can stay a little later for you. How are you? She walked over to lock the door and looked up at him.
He shrugged and pulled his helmet off. “Tired, but not as tired as usual. I think your tea and those herbs are helping.”
She smiled “That is excellent. I’m so glad.”
He nodded and looked down at her. “I’ve been thinking about you and your offer for a massage. I was wondering what I need to do to try that?”
“Well, usually you have to book something in advance, but if you are free right now then I’m happy to get you in the chair. I’m sure your schedule is hectic."
He smiled. “That would be great. Lead the way, I’m all yours.”
She nodded, and motioned for him to follow, turning out the shop lights as they headed to the back. She led him to a smaller room. “You’ll have to take off your upper armor and your shirt. Then position yourself in this chair, chest against this part. Your face will rest in this pillow.” She showed him how to sit. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
Fox nodded and began to remove his armor and top. He got settled in the chair and waited for her to return.
She came back in and adjusted the chair to make sure he was comfortable and then began to pull out the oils. “There are a few scents, do you want to pick one or should I?”
Fox watched her walk about getting ready. “You pick, I trust your judgement.”
Kyla nodded and began to mix a scent with the oil. She dimmed the lights and then headed over to him. “Alright, I’m going to start. If anything feels uncomfortable please let me know.” She began to knead his muscles gently, slowly working up the pressure.
He let out a soft groan at her touch, surprised at how good it felt.
“Its normal to make noises” She said as she continued to work his shoulders. “We hold a lot of tension in our muscles. And getting rid of some of it might help with the headaches I bet you get."
Fox let out a breath as her hands glided over his skin “Yea, I do get headaches.”
Kyla made a soft noise as she continued to work down his back. “Well, hopefully we will give you some relief. Relax and let me work my magic."
He nodded and closed his eyes. The soothing scent of the oil made him relax even more. He wondered what it was as she worked her way back up his spine. All this thoughts vanished though, when she began to work on his neck and scalp. Stars, her hands felt amazing. Another groan escaped his lips as she massaged his scalp.
She worked her way back down to massage his arms and hands, gently massaging his fingers.
He shifted slightly, not used to such a gentle touch. She stepped away and brought some warm towels over to wipe the excess oil from his skin and then let them sit there, the warmth helping to keep him relaxed.
“Alright, I’m going to get you some water.” She spoke softly as she pulled the towels off of him. “When you are ready you can get dressed again, but take your time.”
He slowly raised his head and took the glass she offered him. He had never felt this relaxed. He didn’t even know a body could feel this relaxed. He drank the water in a few gulps and handed the glass back. “Thanks” Fox said as he looked at her in the soft light.
Kyla smiled “I’ll give you some privacy to get dressed. When you are ready we can head out.”
Fox got dressed and headed up to the till “How much do I owe you?”
Kyla tilted her head and nodded at the register. “I already did my closing paperwork, I’d hate to have to do it again. That one was on the house.”
He sighed “That’s not a good business practice.”
She laughed “Its ok. I’m sure you’ll be back again. Here, this card has instructions on how to book appointments.”
He took the card and slipped it into a pouch. “Thank you. That was amazing.”
Kyla smiled and motioned him to the front of the store. “I’m glad. Make sure you drink more water tonight. And some tea if you like, but no caf!” She unlocked the door to let them out and then relocked it.
Fox looked down at her and smiled. “Got it. No caf tonight.” He looked around the street. “Are you ok to get home?”
She nodded. “I don’t live far and its all on busy streets. I’ll be fine.”
He frowned as he looked at her. “Give me your com. I’ll put my number in. You ping me if anything feels weird.”
Kyla handed it over and smiled “Do you worry this much over everything?”
Fox handed her com back to her. “Yes.”
She sighed “No wonder you had knots the size of your helm in your back. Go, I’ll be fine.”
He nodded and then turned to leave. She shook her head and started home. Her walk was uneventful. As she got settled and made herself a late dinner she sent off a quick message to Fox to let him know she was safe and sound.
A respond came immediately “Good”
She smiled and set her com down and went to eat. She hadn’t ever really given much thought to the guards around the city, they were just always there. Now though, she had some definite thoughts about the Commander. He was sweet. And so stressed. She hoped that he slept well after the massage. With a grin she began to get ready for bed.
The idea of clones having absurd tan lines has been amusing me lately. Just think of a group of guys who grew up indoors without sun exposure and probably had supplements for the vitamins instead of actively getting UV. Their Māori genetics have been itching for any single ray of sunlight. So when they get out, and the only part of themselves they somewhat regularly expose is their face, they tan immediately. Like a dry sponge unfurling at a drop of water. Meanwhile, the rest of their body that’s covered in armor still has a slow way to go

Now that Dogma’s realized Eesha’s feelings for him, he’s been spending a sleepless night or two mulling over every single one of the interactions over the past 2 years with a new perspective 😄💜💕
In another live, you were the baddest bitch in the GAR. Literally every clone wanted to be in your legion. They would absolutely dream of it. Once they were in, they would make it their mission to have you all to themselves. Even the clones in other legions would find ways to get transferred - anything to be closer to you. You were by far the hottest of the Jedi Generals, and no one else even came close. You had 1,000,000 men thristing over you on the daily.
i think one of the most important things you learn about making connections with others is that a significant portion of the time people just do not know theyre doing what theyre doing
sometimes someone is acting selfish because they just didnt think you had any interest in what theyre hogging. sometimes you dont get invited to the movies because your friend could have sworn that you said no. sometimes you think someone is mad at you because theyre bad at hiding how little sleep they got. we are all like little worlds that briefly crash into one another from time to time and we just arent physically capable of seeing the whole picture at once in those moments. and learning that really changed everything!
In my head, I call this "vase of flowers" thinking.
See, when I started driving, I would get irritated by people who drove Soooo Slowly... like, the ones who slow down to 10 MPH to take a turn kind of slow. And then one day I was taking a vase of flowers to an event, and even though I'd strapped it in carefully you can bet I was taking the turns extra carefully to keep it from tipping over, slowing way down, and... oh.
And, like, there are definitely unpleasant people in the world. There are definitely people who are toxic, or just don't care about other people, or have a pattern of hurtful behavior. But there are a lot of people who are just trying to deliver a vase of flowers.

Chapter 4: Or The One Where He Figures It Out
The sun was low when most of the Batch had returned to the Marauder. Tech immediately took his place at the pilot seat while Echo eased into the co-pilot position. Wrecker had yet to return from Cira’s, having quickly grown attached to both her and her young son in the short couple of days they'd been on the island. Omega’s absence didn’t slip Hunter's notice either and he sat reclined against the frame of the lowered boarding ramp, twirling his vibroknife between his fingers as he waited. A breeze rustled the branches that stretched out into a canopy that shaded the Maurader as the sun dipped below the shimmering blue horizon.
“Hunter,” Tech heralded his approach to his brother, noting his deep contemplative stare into the forest. Hunter jerked his head in Tech’s direction but didn't falter in the twirling of his blade. Tech continued, “We have a transmission from Cid.”
Hunter scrubbed his hand over his face and grunted. “Great. We’ll watch it soon as Wrecker's back.”
Tech nodded and quietly retreated back to the comfort of his seat. Echo sat reclined in the chair parallel to Tech, his eyes closed in a brief instant of peaceful tranquillity.
“How'd it go?”
Tech snapped his head up with a start and looked at Echo whose eyes were still closed.
“I am afraid I am not sure of what you are referring.”
Echo smirked. “The doc. How did telling her she needed to fix her emergency protocol go?”
Tech’s eyebrows raised in understanding. “Ah. Yes, she was…displeased."
Echo snorted, his shoulders bouncing in a silent chuckle. He slouched in the seat and wiggled to get more comfortable.
“How did you—”
“Because I know you, Tech.” Echo twisted his head to stretch his neck and crossed his arms over his chest before closing his eyes for a quick nap.
Tech took a moment to process Echo’s words before returning his attention to calculating the necessary adjustments needed to tweak the hyperdrive on the Marauder.
———
Wrecker finally returned once the pinks and purples of the sky were beclouded by deep blue and indigo. His thudding footsteps woke Echo with a jarring spasm from his seat, his hand scrubbing his face in an effort to ground himself once more. Tech was far less surprised by Wrecker’s return, having grown accustomed to his heavy gait in their childhood.
Hunter strolled in behind their burly brother and approached the control panel.
“Tech? The message please,” Hunter requested, crossing his arms across his chest.
The hologram of the surly Trandoshan fizzled and flickered briefly before stabilizing into her recognizable shape.
“Hey there boys. I realize I said I would contact you in seven rotations but my contact has sent me some information I need to pass on. You need to get the goods in the next two rotations or scrub the mission and come back. Empire informants have notified the big wigs that there is a high value target on the planet and I don’t feel like having to deal with Empire goons following you back to my establishment. I am sending the details now.”
“That changes things drastically,” Hunter mused. “We still have to get supplies and fuel so we will hit the mainland in two rotations and hopefully we can pull off the mission with minimal interference.”
“We should take Avery,” Omega chirped, causing her brothers to jump in surprise.
Hunter cocked an eyebrow suspiciously. “And why do you want to do that, Omega?”
Omega grinned sheepishly at Hunter as she held Nuna, “Because I already asked her to come with us?”
Hunter pinched the bridge of his nose, a tension headache brewing, “Why did you do that? And that kriffing loth-cat is back?”
Omega scowled and clutched Nuna whose eyes narrowed and tail swished in response to Hunter’s disdain. “Yes. And I asked because she needs medical supplies and has to go anyway. Look, she gave us the last of her bacta patches!” Omega held up a fistful of the patches before continuing. “And I thought she could help with the mission.”
“Look, Omega, we can’t just let some strange woman in on our mission. What if she’s hiding something? Hunter explained while rubbing his temples.
“We have secrets too,” Omega glared, unwilling to break eye contact until she came out the winner of this debate.
Hunter grumbled as he conceded, “Fine. She can come. That loth-cat is not staying the night here again.”
Omega immediately brightened, “Okay! Nuna and I are going to my room now!”
Hunter grumbled, frustrated that Omega always knew how to work him to get her way, “Tech, take the loth-cat back tonight. See if you can get any information out of the doctor so we can prepare for the worst.”
———
The little light on the porch illuminated Tech’s face in the darkness. He lightly rapped on the door with his free hand, the other tenderly cradling the sleeping Nuna. The door slid open to reveal a heavy lidded and flushed Avery leaning against the door frame holding a glass.
She’s inebriated. That will make acquiring intel for Hunter much easier.
“You have been drinking.”
Her eyebrow quirked upward. “Indeed. Care for a glass?”
“I am not one to turn down a free drink. I have no intention of starting tonight.” Tech stepped across the threshold and scanned the room. Nearly decorated but unusually devoid of any obvious sentimental effects.
“Lovely. Hope you enjoy Port in a Storm.”
Tech tilted his head in interest. It was an unusual choice of alcohol. “The fortified wine from Pamarthe? I can’t say that I’ve tried it. I have heard it is quite potent and many non-Pamarthans are easily overwhelmed by it.”
“Change your mind?”
“Not in the slightest. By the way, this little one made her way back to us again today. She seems to be very attached to Omega. They played in her room until they fell asleep together.” He passed Nuna to Avery.
“She seems to like all of you. She doesn’t let just anyone carry her around. Thank you for bringing her home.” She put Nuna down and proceeded to pour a glass of wine for Tech. “Cheers. Please make yourself comfortable. It’s not much but it’s home.”
Tech scrutinized the sitting room more intently, evaluating and assessing for potential threats. His gaze lingered on Avery who had taken a seat and was staring vacantly into her own glass. He found himself intrigued by her. “You are unhappy.”
She looked up with a morose smile before returning her gaze to her glass and downed the remaining wine in a single drink, refilling the crystal immediately. As he continued scanning the room, Tech caught a glance of something that captured his attention; the medic bag from earlier.
“That medic bag is standard issue from the Grand Army of the Republic. How did it come into your possession?”
Tech noted she shifted uncomfortably in her seat before answering, “Because I was a medic for the Grand Army of the Republic.” She breathed a heavy sigh through her nose before rambling on, inebriation loosening her tongue. “Most of my time was spent being shipped off to one of the many medical frigates. Or Coruscant. And there was the single miserable time I was shipped to Kamino. Those Kaminoans hated me. I didn’t last long there. One screaming match with Lama Su and suddenly I’m ‘mouthy’ and ‘insubordinate.’ But I made my way onto the battlefield a few times. Enough times really. Why do you ask?” She absently swirled her glass and avoided his gaze.
“Simple curiosity. It is not exactly a common household item. This wine is excellent by the way.” He watched intently as she leaned her head back and closed her eyes.
This was progress. However, he knew she wasn’t telling the entire truth. She wasn’t lying but she was certainly leaving out key information.
“Hunter has also requested that I ask if you would like to accompany us to the mainland since you mentioned needing to restock on medical supplies to Omega. We will be going in two rotations.”
She slowly looked at him again. “That’s very thoughtful. Yes, thank you,” her head was lulling slightly, eyes drooping heavily under the weight of the wine.
Tech stood up, “Very well. I will let Hunter know you will be coming along. You seem tired so I will be leaving now. Thank you for the wine. Good evening, Doctor Leto.”
“Good evening, Tech. And thank you for bringing Nuna home again.” He turned and gave a nod before walking out the door.
Medical frigates. He thought to himself beneath the sea of stars that twinkled merrily above his head. That means there will be GAR records on her. This will be much easier than I had initially anticipated.
—————
“You were out late last night Tech. Everything okay?” Echo asked as he entered the cockpit of the Marauder.
“Yes, everything is fine. I had an opportunity to talk to Dr. Leto a bit over a glass of wine.”
Wrecker howled with laughter as he slapped Tech’s shoulder, “Yeah! Way to go, Tech!”
Tech shot him an irritated scowl, “There was nothing untoward about our encounter. We talked, that was it. I do believe she divulged more than she would have had she been sober. Fortunately I was able to utilize the information she gave me.”
“And?” Hunter asked, leaning in the doorway with his arms crossed.
“Look at this.” Tech pulled up a holo of an old GAR military service record. “Dr. Avery Leto, Jedi Consular-Healer and Medical Officer. She mentioned in passing a confrontation with Lama Su so I dug into that. It does appear that Lama Su filed a complaint against her for insubordination. It is reported that she refused to refer to clones by their assigned numerical designation insisting on only using their names. And in her confrontation with Lama Su she was recorded as saying, and I quote, ‘Listen here you condescending, arrogant, long necked piece of bantha poodoo, these men are my patients and when you are in my presence you will refer to them by name. It’s the least amount of respect you can show them considering all they do.’”
Hunter bit back a smile. Meanwhile Echo and Wrecker made no attempt to stifle their laughter.
Tech grinned and adjusted his goggles before continuing, “l imagine she feels we are more of a threat to her than she is to us. Empire records have her listed as status unknown. It appears they are not confident that she was terminated during Order 66. It explains her standoffish behavior. For all she knows we’ve been sent to find her and kill her on sight. That said, she did agree to accompany us to the mainland. However, she was exceptionally intoxicated when I broached the topic with her. You may want to send Omega to revisit that offer today.”
Hunter crossed his arms and sighed, “I’ll let Omega know we need her to pay the good doc another visit.”
———
Omega bounced excitedly as she knocked on Avery's door. She grinned from ear to ear, extraordinarily pleased that she’d gotten her way. The vining flowers around the door were in bloom and Omega watched in awe as a dazzling butterfly flitted from blossom to blossom. There was a soft shuffling and Omega saw Avery peek out from behind the curtain. She waved enthusiastically to her before the curtain fell shut and the door opened.
She was met with a forced smile and squinting, blood-shot eyes as Avery leaned against the doorframe. “Good morning, Omega. What can I do for you?”
Omega bounced happily on the balls of her feet. “Hunter sent me to tell you he’s okay with you joining us tomorrow! He says we are leaving at 0700!”
Confusion and then comprehension crossed Avery's face as she nodded slowly. “Yes, thank you Omega.” Avery rubbed her face. “I…am not well this morning, little one. I’m sorry—”
“Oh it’s okay!” Omega chirped. “One time Ketch drank too many Wicked Womprats and his eyes looked like yours do right now!”
As she watched Omega happily skip away, her brow pinched in confusion and she was left with questions. Of those being “Who is Ketch? and “What is a Wicked Womprat?” She rubbed her temples as the throbbing behind them intensified and returned to her bed to nurse her self inflicted pain. She groaned as she lay down and pulled her blanket over her head. Nuna padded across her and slipped beneath the covers, tucking herself beneath Avery's chin and they both fell asleep as the little loth-cat purred.
