Details, details and details.

During a crafting project, especially at the end, I love to create and assamble as many details as possible.

With many different materials: fabrics, metals, paper, wood, etc.

Spending so much time on a doll project always makes me kind of obsessed with it and makes want to make more and more photo's :-)

Doll: 1/3th scale blue Resinsoul (headless); body blush and black gradient dye by me. Bronze jewelry from 1970s: Pentii Sarpaneva. Outfit: design, sewing, embroidery and assembly by me.

All dolls alre legit and come with Coas and their boxes. All dolls are in very good condition (no yellowing, no cracks, blushing in pristine condition [done by me, except on the hellhound]). All come with everything as shown on the pictures (except Eudora and Doudou, they come without eyes).

Shipping within the EU is 14$, worldwide shipping is 24$.

Decided to do a more serious photoset this year.

The quote is from Book 1 of Cirque du Freak, and I felt like people at large could stand to be reminded of this. We hear a lot of “I only buy recasts of dolls from expensive companies” and “I only buy recasts of dolls no longer available.” A lot of “this one recast won’t shut down a company.” A lot of “the artists aren’t going to starve because of me.” A lot of “this isn’t REALLY killing the hobby.”

We also hear a lot of “but I love my recasts!” A lot of “all dolls need love.” A lot of “my attachment to my forged art is just as valid as your attachment to your legit, the artists and the hobby as a whole.” A lot of “judging people is wrong.” A lot of “you shouldn’t end a friendship over a doll.”

The problem with all of this is magical thinking. Because the reality is all recasts that are purchased help fund the recasting of standard editions, single artist companies, etc. The reality is that companies have closed down because of recasters. The reality is that recasts drain away hundreds of thousands of dollars every year that should be flowing into the hobby economy and the secondhand market.

You can’t rely on everyone else to do the right thing if you won’t. Your “moral code” means nothing to recasters, so it doesn’t matter what kind of restrictions you put on your own buying practices, because they won’t follow it. They’ll steal from the very companies you insist you’d never buy a recast of. Real life is nasty. It’s cruel. In real life, recasters close down companies. In real life, pushing companies that much closer to closing their doors means community doors will be closed to you.

Actions have consequences. Remember that always.

Day 5: What was the first BJD you ever saw?

In 2005, I graduated high school and moved across the country to attend a tiny college in upstate New York. My roommate was from Hong Kong, and she’d brought with her one of her dolls, a Custom House Chowon. He was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I called him my boyfriend and frequently teased about taking him home with me.

My tastes have definitely changed over the years (the first sculpts on my wishlist were Blue Fairy Jerome and CP Chiwoo), as I tend to lean more towards realism and away from the heavily anime-influenced styles, but there will always be a place in my heart for the classics! 💞

That… took me a bit. But I really wanted to put those numbers down somewhere, so here we go! I think I covered a wide array of different kind of eyes; from eyes that are available since ages (like Mako, Enchanted and Soom) to those that are kind of hard to get if you’re not from certain countries (tianba, kanis, baez).

Acrylics, glass, resin, silicone. 10 to 14mm, super low dome to high dome, small iris and regular iris. I’m SO happy that the options for doll owners grew so much over the last few years <3

Personal favourites are Soulinabox, tianba and fourthsealstudio; maserpiece for dolls with wonky eye wells, kanis for dolls with really round eye wells.
