today i am thinking about the eight bullets that kill enjolras, and how i always see people saying they represent his eight friends to die at the barricade, but when i first read his death what came to my mind was the eight men to escape the barricade alive: valjean, marius, javert, and the five men who are given the national guard uniforms. i think of those eight bullets being meant for those eight men, and enjolras taking them all. he did not change the world in the way he meant, but he changed the world for eight men, and that has to be enough.

les miserables is crazy because it's such an overtly political novel and the whole plot is a criticism of the justice and police systems with unmistakably pro-revolution and anti-monarchy sentiments, yet it's loved and celebrated worldwide as a story of human redemption that completely ignores the cause and need for jean valjean's 'redemption' in the first place. the musical, the most famous adaptation, dilutes and sidelines its political message to the point where almost nothing about it in mainstream pop culture is true. common misconceptions like javert being an outlier in the police force + being especially obsessed with valjean (he wasn't), jean valjean having been imprisoned for 19 years unfairly or by corruption (he wasn't), or the revolutionaries being schoolboys who didn't have a unified cause or plan (they were not) are so crazy in relation to the actual brick and honestly kind of sinister
