end of oak street
spoilers maybe....??? I'm going to try to be vague.
I went and watched End of Oak Street yesterday. I had a panic attack in the theater and had to leave.
I love horror movies of different flavors and thought i knew what i was going into. Who doesnt love a good dinosaur flick? The movie can be silly and stupid at times, and very suspensful at others. But the way this movie deals with its characters, the realness of their desperation, the brutality, the grief, the discussions of religion in the bleakest of situations because theyre grasping for anything that may help, the family dynamics and their own personal issues and struggles bleeding into how theyre wanting to handle the situation and in turn melting into how they treat eachother....it really did me in.
This felt to me like an old coming of age film, or maybe the kids films thatd give me nightmares, or like the old animated films with animals or inanimate objects as your main characters, cause the trauma and situations theyre going to put these mice through is more than theyd ever do to a human child, and y know what, maybe not everyone will make it out alive. Cause death is a part of life kids, right? *cough* My Girl *cough*
It could be that i didnt handle the movie well, because of a specific trailer that aired before the film. Specifically the one for whalefall .
Whatever it was, i entered The End of Oak Street, already shaken.
I enjoy seeing people getting eaten by dinosaurs as much as the next person, but this went from feeling like a creature feature to a life lesson really fast. "Hey kids, getting stuck in a situation where you have to be aware and fight for yourself every second of the day is just life. And no, not even your house is safe, so dont let your guard down. Nothing will ever be the same.
I really envy the people who got to watch this and laugh and enjoy the creature feature aspects like i thought i was going to. But the YA coming of age family survival tropes took me down. Also the many, many cat deaths, fear for the family dog, among a few other things that i wont go into in detail.
I'm honestly still processing what this movie made me feel so i apologize if this was a mess or made no sense. I may add to this later with more thoughts. Did anyone else have similar thoughts?
