Personally (personally) ((mine own opinion)) (((this is my brain))) ((((me)))) (((((my opinion))))) I don’t really… like the common fanon interpretation of Joanna. Which feels kinda sad, I want to give her more attention in my work, but I feel kinda sidelined cus I don’t ship her with Saavik or depict her as a carbon copy of her dad. Like why’s she a doctor working for starfleet. Cus her dad was?????? What if she was an engineer, or tactical? Or, god forbid, NOT STARFLEET AT ALL???? What if girl just wanted to be an artist or smth goddamn 😭 I haven’t read CoC yet so I don’t know for sure how she’s depicted in beta canon, hell outside of being mentioned in TAS I’m. Not sure if she’s even considered alpha canon? So like. People can do what they want it just feels… lazy I guess. Saavik and David by extension have their own motivations and characters, influenced by their fathers for sure, but not identical in every way. Meanwhile for Joanna it just feels like she’s there to Be Dr. McCoy or she’s just an object to be shipped with Saavik.
And then regarding the shipping, like maybe I’m too polyamorous McSpirk pilled, but like. That’s Saavik’s sister???????? And I have to stress. I’m pro-fic, ship whatever you want, I do not care. But like. If you’re gonna ship pseudo-incest at least be clear that it’s pseudo-incest????? Probably just that folks are too Spirk focused and don’t really. Think or care about Bones as a part of Kirk and Spock’s lives. But goddamnit I care. I see you Bones, I see you Bones ships… you matter to me… Joanna and Saavik sisterhood you matter to me…

i've been reading the pandora principle and i am loving it... learning about her past breaks my heart but then the novel heals it when she spends time with spock... their moments together are so beautiful. he treats her with so much care and patience, with the love of a father he never had. he doesn't push, he doesn't insist. he tells her stories, they stargaze together and they learn new things together. they really mean so much to me.
i plan to make more fanart of saavik specially, the fact that she used to kick ass at the academy and was called "the photon torpedo" by how well she threw the ball at baseball? that's my goat!!!
