It was subtle, but Guy caught it as soon as he entered the room.
Somehow the air seemed… heavier. A little harder to breathe. Like when it’s cold and every breath brings that chill to your lungs, preventing you from breathing deep.
Guy knew it was probably Honey. When they had something on their mind, he could feel it before they even say a word.
And today, he saw it in the way they buried themselves under the covers on their shared bed. Quite obvious, which means they were currently deep in the spiral that is their overthinking mind.
Guy’s lips curled up in a small smile. It was cute how easy they were to read sometimes.
He walked over to the bed, taking care to shuffle his feet just that little bit louder to let them know of his presence so he didn’t scare them. The bed dipped as he sat on the edge.
Honey didn’t answer, but they did move. That was enough of an invitation for Guy to lift the sheets and burrow his way in, joining them.
“Honey?” Poking them, he gauged their reaction. If they turned toward him, even just with their head, he knew they’d be open to banter - something lighthearted to make them smile. But if they turned away, then he knew they weren’t in the mood and instead probably needed genuine support.
Inching closer, Guy gathered them in his arms, noting with relief that they were open to touch when they immediately reached back. Their arms wrapped tight around his waist as they buried their face in the crook of his neck as if they were trying to hide away from the world.
Keeping a hand around them, Guy used his other hand to stroke up and down their back, patiently waiting for them to talk if they were feeling it. It was a comfortable silence, interrupted only by some light humming from Guy. He somehow always made it so that Honey didn’t feel like they had to fill the silence when they were with him.
A few minutes passed before Honey spoke.
“I feel like everyone hates me.” They said, face still buried in the crook of his neck.
Guy held them closer. As much as he wanted to say “Everyone loves you, baby.”, he knew it wouldn’t be enough. And knowing Honey, they’d probably think he was just sweeping it under the rug and dismiss it because it was a silly problem.
“Did something happen today?”
Honey shook their head. “And that’s the thing. Nothing happened, so I don’t know why I’m feeling this way. Like everything I do is somehow wrong and pissing someone off. Maybe you-“
“I’m gonna stop you there Honey.” Guy leaned back enough to look at them in the eyes, gently pressing his forehead against theirs. “I love you. Don’t ever think otherwise. Well, you can. But even if you do, I’ll always be here to remind you.”
That got a little smile out of them, which made Guy’s heart do backflips. They’re so adorable it makes him melt.
“It’s okay to feel this way. Most people do once in a while. When it feels like everyone somehow hates you, just remember that you have someone here that loves you always.” He tucked a strand of hair behind their ear, smiling when they leaned into his touch.
“You might not believe it, but you’ll always feel it.” Guy winked. “I have many tricks up my sleeve. Eheheheh!”
Honey smacked him lightly on the arm. They were slowly coming out of their shell again.
“And even if someone does dislike you for whatever reason, that’s fine. You don’t need to please everyone. They’re not worth keeping around if they got mad over nothing, not even communicating why they feel that way even though you can notice it.”
“At the end of the day the only thing you have control over is yourself. You can’t control how other people perceive you. So as long as you are kind and treat everyone nicely, then if they hate you it’s on them. And how sad must they be to hate you for being kind to them.”
Honey giggled, tense shoulders finally relaxing.
“I love you.” Guy kissed them once more. “I always will.”
Honey’s vision blurred as tears welled up in their eyes, but before they could fall Guy gently wiped them away with his thumb.
“Anytime, baby. I’m always here.”
