The first time Gavin understood the idea of "mortals and immortals dont work" is when he had to face vega; his calm and cocky exterior barley masked the pure fear when vega broke the ward protecting caelum and freelancer. The saying wasn't because demons and humans couldn't get along, but it was because that overhanging fear of death tainted ever good or mundane moment. Anything at any moment could harm or kill freelancer and there's no way he could be prepared for what or when. Everyone treated it as if it was normal, like it was some sacrifice that came with love; and it was worth it, but age and time didnt dull that fear. He loved them, and with that came the fear of losing them, it was worth it sure, but every second in the back of his head he was wondering
"are they okay?"
"Are they actually safe?"
And the truth is, he would never know. All you can do is make the best out of the time you have now, be greatful for every mundane Saturday watching the same movie for the millionth time, enjoy the sound of their laugh, commit their face to memory. Because you never know when you might hear that laugh for the last time, or when you'll see their face for the last time.
Love is worth the cost, but in a perfect world, there wouldn't be a cost at all.
