All this discourse over who does "painting with light"
Hiroshi Nagai's paintings need sunglasses to look at.
They look like how it feels to walk across a parking lot on a 98° summer day without a speck of shade in sight.
They look like heaven but also like you'd burn your bare feet on the ground.
Even when you can see shade you know it's not enough and the minute you step out you'll be burnt to a crisp like a vampire.
And it's BEAUTIFUL
I'll throw in the wonderful Eizin Suzuki into this ring too, a man whose work just breathes light without actually using dynamic lighting in the usual way. It's no surprise both Nagai and Suzuki are both considered prolific in art pertaining to the city pop genre because they're able to paint these kinds of scenes with a delicate touch.
This feels like I could trip on that radio and fall right into that water, feeling the crystal waves as I drop in.
And this, a nice stroll down a resort strip, where my sunscreened skin could literally feel cooked if I leaned too close to the tiling.
And then a nice stretch of summer street, wherein you could see your face in the flushed red of that car provided it didn't blind you from its sunny reflections.
I don't think I even need to say anything more, Suzuki's a massive influence in how he even places colours so warmly in such unorthodox manner. It's a naturally sunkissed talent~ đ
Looking at these I had the sudden full body memory of swim team at the outdoor college pool on summer vacation, blistering heat, launching off a starting block into water just that color, the sun on my back and the water everywhere. I can smell the chlorine.

Rereading all systems red and the first 2 chapters are strong contenders for funniest intro to a book series. Jumping straight to action, and mb is giving us absolutely no info about anything. Who are those people? Some weird hippies it's not important. Why are they here? Mb does not give a shit. What is this planet? Fuck if it knows. Here is a small paragraph that fucking states everyone's relationship status like a wiki article that we are never gonna get back to. Ugh there are hostiles that keep us away from our media #our media.
#murderbot didn't read the info packet to know that one of the hippies is President of a planet#there is zero chance it knows their first names

no no, I realise it, Iâm just still driving despite the check engine light being on
This is a spreadsheet from Old Kingdom Egypt, written about 4500 years ago. It was part of the diary and logbook of Merer, an inspector responsible for the transportation of materials to Giza for the construction of Khufu's pyramid. There's something beautiful about the organization here, how his rows and columns would fit in just as well in Excel as any modern spreadsheet of delivery records. Across the yawning gulf of ages, we're united by this mundane and incredibly human task. I love reading things like this. They remind me of the fundamental similarity of humans across time. They were no less intelligent or skilled than we, and oftentimes had to be moreso, to account for the many technological aids they lacked.
I often hear people talk about how showing a smartphone to a medieval peasant would shock him, but I want to show Merer Excel. I think pivot tables would make him cry tears of joy.
@copperbadge, could Merer be a distant ancestor of yours?
I mean I feel like, spiritually, Merer is an ancestor to all of those who kneel at the altar of Rows And Columns.

Like the man saidâŚthe shadow takes another form and ruses again. Time to make some calls and let them know weâre watching.
While watching a DVD from the library my TV popped up a message saying to press a button if I wanted to watch this from additional providers.
It's never done that before so I looked it up and turns out Roku TVs have added all sorts of creepy things in the privacy section since I last checked.
One of which being they take screenshots from what you're watching and send them to third parties to identify it.
Fucking hell! Remember when every fucking device in your life wasn't a spy implanted in your home and working against your interests to try and sell your data? Remember how nice that was??
Remember when the TV was just a tool that would play the things you plugged into it?
Why must the future suck SO much?
TVs collect a huge amount of data. Here's how to use privacy settings to limit the surveillance on TVs from LG, Samsung, TCL, and every othe

weâve gone from the yee haw agenda to the ye olde thot programme
Ah yes, those slutty slutty Landsknecht shorts:
The bare-legged / hot-pants look was fairly common, since the whole point about being a Landsknecht (or Reislaufer, their Swiss equivalent) was to look outrageous.
Most period illustrations of Landsknechts are black-and-white woodcutsâŚ
âŚthough in 1905 a book called âGeschichte des KostĂźmsâ - History of Costume - assembled a bunch of black-and-whites and added colour.
If they look excessively gaudy, theyâre not, because these next prints were coloured in-period by an artist called Erhard SchĂśn, and itâs fair to assume he was representing what he saw.
In short - or in shorts - those reenactor costumes are spot on. :->
Something mentioned nowhere in this post that I have just learned from googling: these guys were not Ye Olde Medieval Dandies. They were 15th-16th century mercenaries. Pretty hardcore, too. They were exempt from sumptuary laws (ie the rules that said you couldnât wear certain colours or cloth or styles) and apparently their response to that was technicolour thotpants.
I was complaining earlier about costuming in both âhistoricalâ settings and in fantasy/scifi. This is exactly what I mean when I say a knowledge of actual history would enrich the conceptual creative palette for things like âhardcore mercenary outfits.â
Metal Detectorist Discovers Medieval Wedding Ring Â
Every metal detectorist dreams of unearthing something valuable. For one man the English countryside yielded an incredible find when he stumbled upon a medieval diamond wedding ring in âalmost perfect conditionâ near Thorncombe, in the South West of the country.
Now the item is expected to fetch between ÂŁ30,000 and ÂŁ40,000 (Sold For: ÂŁ38,000) when it goes on auction later this month.
David Board, 69, found the âstunningâ ring on his second attempt at becoming a metal detectorist after a stint in the 1970s in which he scoured local beaches but found nothing of much consequence, a press release from auction house Noonans said earlier this week.
Board called the ring âa once-in-a-lifetimeâ find.
During a recent interview, he said: âThere will probably never be another one like it. Back then, each ring was individual and unique, not mass produced like today. Itâs stunning.â
Board took up metal detecting again in 2019. During the second day of a field search, he had almost given up when he got a signal on his metal detector by a footpath.
Initially, the culprit looked like a sweet wrapper but Board soon realized that it was a gold ring.
When he dug it up all covered in mud, Board said he thought it was just âscrap metalâ and popped it into his pocket.
âIt was once I got home and washed it off that we realized it was a lot better than we thought,â he explained.
The ring is in âalmost perfect condition,â Nigel Mills, a consultant in coins and antiquities at Noonans, said in the release. The jewelery has a golden hoop of two entwined bands to symbolize marital union and an inverted diamond set into it.
Inside the band is a medieval French inscription that reads, âIeo vos tien foi tenes le moy,â translating as, âI hold your faith, hold mine,â according to the auction house.
Due to the location of the find and the quality of the ring, Noonansâ experts surmised that itâs the wedding ring of Joan Brook, given to her by her husband, Thomas Brook.
Their marriage in 1388 brought great wealth to the Brook family, the release said, as Joan was the widow of Robert Cheddar, a wealthy cloth merchant and twice mayor of Bristol â a city in western England.
It was at a time when medieval notions of chivalry and courtly love were at their zenith, concepts which the ring reflects, Noonans said.
Now known as The Lady Brook Medieval diamond ring, the item will be auctioned on November 29.
Board goes out three times a week, weather permitting, in hope of uncovering another great relic among the musket balls and King George I coins. âIt will be amazing if I did,â he responded, adding âyou never know what the next signal is going to bring.â
The discovery adds to a list of incredible finds by detectorists in the UK.
One amateur uncovered a haul of Bronze Age objects in a Scottish field in 2020, in what experts at the time called a ânationally significantâ discovery.
And last year it was reported that a huge hoard of Iron Age gold artifacts had been found by a rookie detectorist in Denmark.
By Hafsa Khalil.
the fact that they were able to figure out, not only what period the ring was from, but WHOM IT BELONGED TOâŚ. absolutely wild. <3

oH RIGHT This was before LotR pioneered cgi for massed crowd behavior
There was so much cool cgi in those movies I just assumed all the clones were too but back then I guess they still couldnât really be
this is so sexy
I wonder what happened to all the agent smith masks
I can actually answer this! So the latex/rubber they used, while standard for Hollywood at the time, reacted REALLY BADLY to being doused in pouring water nonstop for an entire day of shooting. They ended up corroding, which caused them to stink really badly and glob together at the seams. The original plan was to hand out masks to various crew members on the final day of shooting as souvenirs, but the sopping wet, melting, rotting rubber got so gross that by the end of that shooting day theyâd already thrown most of them out. Somewhere in a landfill are hundreds of disgusting, bloated, slimey Hugo weaving heads fused together into a nightmarish rotting amalgam :)
itâs what he would have wanted
it turns out i really enjoy making educational posts about the comics making process and ways of thinking. here's another one featuring characters from my graphic novel in a very anachronistic art museum.
