it's so wild when your parent changes when you become an adult. my dad is very cordial and non confrontational - he regularly helps me with adult stuff like changing the oil or providing insurance tips. he's always smiling when i call him on video and providing jokes when i complain about college
when i was a kid, i would have to tiptoe around his anger issues often, sometimes running quietly past his work table until he got his own place completely separate from our family, locked away for days. every so often he would start screaming in the car and trying to hit me or my brother for talking too loud while my mom attempted to calm him down as he swerved on the road. and now he, smiling, helps me with car insurance.
like oh, this is just who you are when you have power over someone, and this is who you are when you dont have power over someone. no wonder you can have a normal life, friends, work while scaring the shit out of your kids and wife. i see it now. i see why no one would have believed me. that, i think, is one of the core fears of trauma - seeing the outside of it from the perspective of other adults that brushed you aside, and understanding. of course, that understanding gives the opposite of solace; it just gives you more grief with nowhere for it to go
growing up religious and transgender kinda sucks but not for the reason you think. ok yes for the reason you think but also because of the insane theology you make up in your head to explain why you feel this way

So I'm moving out from my parents' place (YAY!) and my soon-to-be-roommate uses per/pers pronouns.
My mom, who has always contested my identity and use of they/them, has now excitedly informed me she LOVES per/pers as neutral pronouns and is now going to use per/pers to refer to me (????)
Reason being (and i saw this coming from a mile away) "they/them invites satanic influence because those are the pronouns of the demonic Legion" 🫠💀
Can my Indigenous ass say the progressive christian impulse to no-true-scotsman their entire religion, appealing to "what jesus actually taught", *specifically* in a way that points to "modern" christianity as deviating from this, implying it used to be better, is completely fucking bonkers. You can't RETVRN your way out of genocide. Christianity has been about pillaging for the last 2000 years & if you sincerely want to change this I can respect that but be so fucking fr when you talk about how "modern christianity" isn't what jesus taught. Neither was the roman empire innit

& if you want to play that game the christian bible also says to convert the entire world so. It's not looking great. The pillaging is kind of a central pillar of the ideology. having religious trauma from the most boring of churches is such a unique experience. stained glass and high ceilings dont mean anything. but dingy basements and hotel bibles mean everything. my religious trauma (and i would assume a lot of others) isnt as pure as what is shown. its gross basements, hand-me-down bibles, wooden chairs that look like theyre at least 50 years old, vhs tapes and big box tvs, ugly carpet, and "god bless you" instead of i love you.
It's drop-tile ceilings and old carpet. It's the normal-looking people around you talking about demons and the end times as if it was the most normal and obvious thing in the world. It's sitting on a couch in a basement watching videos about why "evolutionists" are evil atheists conspiring to stop the world from knowing The Truth about God while memorizing canned justifications for his existence. It's the pastor talking about how amazing dying is going to be, because then you'll finally go to heaven, and how the end of the world is going to be even better because then this sinful earth will finally be gone. It's the radio station playing the same soft-rock songs about Jesus and Heaven over and over and over again.
It's not about the architecture or the fiery words of the pastor- sometimes it's the exact opposite, how normal it all looks, how happy they all act, how they twist your perception of reality to think that this is all perfectly normal, and everyone else is crazy.
