ok so first of all lets start with the t rex. her very first moment is the goat leg ending up on the car, but we can see in the next shot that she is very capable of swallowing the goat whole. so how did that leg get there? given evidence that t. rexes were likely social creatures, i like to imagine that the leg on the car was more “here you go have part of my meal because you’re small” for the humans

next is her communication. i want to look at one specific thing, which was actually the thing that prompted the post

to me, that certainly looks like eye pinning. eye pinning is a behavior in birds that signals high stimulation. here’s what it looks like in a bird

it can be positive or negative, but in this case it’s probably not negative, because there’s nothing forcing the rex to stay there. if she wanted to leave the situation she could hit the bricks

the continual roaring also sort of suggests play behavior to me. there’s not really any sense in making a shitload of noise at your prey (unless you’re trying to scare them out of cover, but we know she doesn’t need to do that because we see she’s strong enough to just break into the car) so, especially because they keep screaming, that reads way more like “im making noises and they’re making noises back ^w^” then it does as trying to intimidate prey for some reason

play behavior also makes sense because we know, canonically, she’s crazy understimulated. alan grant says as much when he mentions that they aren’t feeding her in a way that promotes hunting behavior. the way she noses at the jeep and spins it really just looks more like curious interaction than anything, as well as all the chasing people she does

next, the raptors. their really famous scene is the kitchen, but first let’s establish some facts about them. we know from muldoon and what we’re shown that:

- they’re smart enough to use one of their own as a distraction for flanking maneuvers

- they’re good at problem solving enough to wait until the electric fences are turned off to systematically test them for vulnerabilities

- they’re absurdly fast. “60 mph on open ground” fast

- they are absolutely not in a big enough enclosure

- they’re not fed in a way that promotes hunting behavior either

so when you put all this information together and then look at the kitchen scene, i don’t believe for even one second that the “hide behind the counter” routine is fooling those two raptors for any time at all. that entire sequence of loudly scrambling around the kitchen while something that can keep pace with a cheetah pretends it can’t catch you? yeah that makes WAY more sense as play behavior than it does hunting, especially since we see numerous times that there are many things on the island easier to catch and eat than a bunch of skinny humans (this goes for the rex, too!)

the bit with the noises is also true here. more true, if anything. muldoon tells us the raptors are ambush predators, so why on earth would they get into a hunting ground and then risk scaring their prey off with the loud barking calls? “hi we’re here come out and play” is a much more sensible use of a call loud enough to hurt a human’s ears from across a room in that situation

It's a free, no sign-up, no ads fitness resource created by professionals who view this as activism (fitness should be accessible to everyone), and it's very thoughtful and thorough.

Features I really like:

- all instructions for workout routines are diagrammed on single pages with a clean, easy to read layout

- there's 30 or 60 day programs you can follow if you, like me, don't know what to do. they take you through a rotation of workouts so you're working different muscle groups on different day for a specific purpose

- there's so much variety and there's a filter so you can find the level and your goals and type of workout you wanna do

- you don't need any equipment

- some of the programs are RPGs or adventure stories! How's that for motivation. There's also badges and achievements or something but I haven't looked that closely at how that works yet

- they're nerds. they name workouts after D&D classes. There's a Lannistrr workout, a batcave workout, a witcher workout

Transmascs are loving and supporting their transfem partners or friends or family and vice versa, they’re swapping clothes with each other or helping each other with their HRT injections or buying each other plushies and cute little trinkets, they’re playing video games with each other, asking each other out, dating and marrying each other, they’re saying such beautiful words about each other hoping that the other will read them and smile, they’re protecting each other from transphobes or helping them to escape their families or offering them a place to stay and a couch to crash on, they’re sharing music recs and teaching each other new skills and creating new things together. So say they roll a 9 or 10, they get to act normally, so this ain’t the best. This isn’t good, this works for them right?

This is to lure your dm into a false sense of MAINTAINING CONTROL.

So next we have 7-8. Which I like to call: The Mario Party effect.

Chances are when you cast this on a group, you probably had a few of those goons next to one another. Enemies like to be close to one another, they’re friends, they get along.

OR AT LEAST THEY FUCKING USED TO.

NOW THEY BEAT EACH OTHER TO DEATH FOR YOUR AMUSEMENT. NO ONE KNOWS WHY.

THE DICE MADE THEM DO IT.

Or they might not be next to anyone, in which case they may as well have rolled a 2-6, a roll I like to call: Time out mode. This is what the dice rolls to make you earn your keep, it can’t do ALL the work killing all these people for you. Sometimes, it’ll just make all your enemies stand around not doing anything for turn after turn after turn.

Until they roll a 1. Now, you might be thinking “Move in a direction, that’s not that bad.” That’s because you don’t know.

There is a truth to confusion. A hidden reality within the dice. It hates them. It truly, truly hates the people it gets used on.

When they roll a 1, if the dice can kill them

It will.

It will have them run off cliffs, into lava, into attacks of oppotunity, it’ll run wizards into the loving embrace of your barbarian, it will feed the hapless mooks into the wall of fire your wizard made. If you have a woodchipper out somehow, it may as well be a goddamn black hole because they’re sure as shit not going anywhere fucking else.

So I know what you’re thinking now, you’re thinking:

“Wow Neonir, that sure does sound like a cruel and unjust lesson from god to inflict on your DM alright!”

And you’d be fucking right.

But you don’t quite understand.

These are but a few of the strongest enemies in the game, if you have a look, you’ll see they have a few immunities, there are more like them, some have immunity to other things, but you’ll always notice one thing. One thing missing from these lists.

Yeah.

It can work.

On anything.

Anything can be forced to run around to the benny hill theme, slapping its buddies and staring at stars.

I have not yet found a SINGLE. DAMN. THING. That you cannot confuse into submission.

Poisoned? Hah, maybe if you’re level 3 and fighting rats.

Charm? Can’t play with the big boys.

Paralyzed, cool, but still pretty much even chances of the target being immune at this point.

But confusion?

I think the greatest hit so far was casting it on an enemy boss that was approaching, by air, via Nightmare. the spell hit both the boss and the horse. the boss saved. the nightmare didn’t.

the nightmare rolled “make a melee attack” on the confusion table.

the DM ruled that the best way to interpret that, under the circumstances, would be that the horse tried to throw its rider.

contested strength check. the horse saved. the boss didn’t.
