pity alone would not be the reason the doctor let the master live. in fact, i don’t think it’s pity at all. like come on, that’s his childhood best friend, quite literally the only person that has ever and will ever understand him at any capacity (which is quite a lot.) yes the doctor absolutely has a superiority complex and that does show constantly but if anything, besides meaning a lot to him, i think the reason he lets the master live is out of guilt, which isn’t any better. this is all to say i don’t think the doctor thinks of the master as any lesser than them. i think it’s knowing just how similar they are, how much the understand each other. i think that even if just for one second the doctor lets down their guard and for once lets the master feel his equal, the doctor is scared of how much that would affect and influence him. because that’s his friend. they like each other, they can’t help it. the only way the doctor can keep the master at an arms length is by treating him the same way he treats everyone else. as better than

The times the doctor says/feels pity, are just a way to hide that they actually care. Pity is easier. The doctor can pity anyone. Actually caring is emotionally jarring and the doctor is too emotionally constipated to be vulnerable like that. Also, in the doctor falls he uses the word pity cause he's angry. And instead of showing emotions, saying he feels pity for the master is easier. Is less vulnerable. He would sooner accept a gun to his head before admitting he cares. I think the doctor also suppresses any thoughts of care in case he gets hurt. Feeling pity is easier. He cares, but he convinces himself it's just pity. Easier, more painless, if everything fails
