“america” is not a continent; north america is one and south america is another. in period british stories you literally have people referring to “the americas” when referring to the land mass as a whole, and to be honest, in this day and age people do know what you’re talking about if you say “american” because no other country uses “american” to describe themselves. even central americans say the country. Im pretty sure part of it is people not being able to fathom the size of the country but either way, yeah, it makes even less sense to say european because that IS a continent to begin with and a lot changes from country to country. the direct equivalent would be saying your state because there are about the same amount of countries in europe as there are states in the us but europeans get mad when US tourists say their state or region because “you’re so self centered no one knows your whole country just say america”. so then americans/“people from the united states” will say either america/im american or the us/the united states and then they get the “okay but WHERE your country is so big that tells me nothing about you”

all this to say let people say what they fucking want stop having a complex we need to stop nitpicking how people introduce themselves when we could be nitpicking how all our governments could be doing better

i think the most upsetting thing about american-flavor puritanism is how fucking patronizing it is. it's 2026 but the whole world still has to deal with a cultural hegemony grown from the gnarled vestiges of victorian-era paternalism. tax-paying adults with passports and the right to vote are treated like wayward children because of the antiquated idea that authorities must protect the weak minds of the unwashed masses from depravity and corruption. the average american can send a fellow citizen to the chair, but they can't piss in a ditch without being declared an outlaw. american entertainment media is saturated with sex, but you can't talk about it online without getting your account suspended. it's such blatant censorship at a universal scale, but because sexual content is framed as inherently dangerous, this restriction on basic adult autonomy, this blanket denial of moral and intellectual adulthood, can be reframed as protection, an expression of care, a moral duty. Fixing issues before they develop into actual disasters is such an underappreciated thing it hurts at all levels.

We don't talk about acid rain because there isn't any more acid rain because when acid rain started happening and we learned that the cause was mainly sulphur oxide and carbon monooxide from car exhausts, countries all over the world made it a law that car companies had to produce cars that produced less exhaust with better effectivenes (burning the fuel all the way to CO2 instead of the halfassed CO) and oil rafineries to remove the sulphur from the gasoline in the first place.

We don't talk about computers crashing because of the turn of the century, because thousands of programmers worked very hard to write updates and patches for Every Single Program humanity as a whole used back in 1999 and then somehow managed to failtest, distribute, and update every single device and system, be it an online or offline one before the midnight of the 1st january of 2000.

On a much smaller scale, no one ever commenta or notices cleaners and housekeepers doing their job - be it at home or at whole buildings - because they always make sure that there's nothing to notice. But don't be fooled - at any point of your life you are one week of them not doing away from swimming in trash and filth with nothing to eat and nothing clean to wear. Only then you would notice.

Now it's time to do that thing again and make sure that we don't kill our whole planetary ecosystem within the next century.

If you do want to appreciate cleaners more I would highly recommend asking what the executive team for your workplace are doing for 'Thank your Cleaner Day'. Only one workplace I asked had anything planned before I checked, but they all put something on after I asked, half of them happy to let me contribute with some choccys, compiling messages of thanks and/or knitted trinkets. i dont know why people are like ‘we need to bully people so they are more normal’ when if the internet has been anything its been a series of longitudinal studies showing that prolonged large scale bullying tends to lead people to becoming increasingly weird, paranoid, sometimes off-putting, traumatized, emotionally troubled, ethically disregulated, etc. even unethical modalities like behaviorism don’t focus exclusively or primarily on punishment. like people should literally just be honest and say they want more bullying because they like to do it and have fun hurting other people

I think half of the issue is what people classify as bullying. I still have the definition my school’s sixth grade bullying guest speaker (Ooch) gave us: Repeated aggression or cruelty to a less powerful person, from a more powerful person or group of people. It’s wordy, but it works.

I do say that we need bullying back sometimes, but when I say it I elaborate that I’m genuinely not talking about the bullying that’s too far. The 90s had bullying in schools that made students kill themselves and THAT IS BAD. Non-negotiable, that is bad. This post sparked the gears turning on trying harder to find the words that I actually mean, which is closer to “we need to be telling people when their behavior is inappropriate more,” which may have processed as “bring back bullying, but just a little bit” because bullying is the only major cultural phenomenon I know of where you tell people you have a problem with them when you do. It’s just that the people who are bullies are projecting, rather than saying things that actually need to be said.

No real conclusion here. Still tossing this around in my head, but I wanted to share
