people who only speak languages that don’t make compound words by smashing multiple existing words together into one big mess of letters with no spaces will never experience the epic highs and lows of reading a salad recipe that calls for “kerstomaatjes”, which depending on where your brain thinks the cutoff point should be could mean either cherry tomatoes (kers-tomaatjes) or small christmas grannies (kerst-omaatjes). it’s “let’s eat, grandma!” vs. “let’s eat grandma!” all over again, but concentrated into a single word, which, as two prominent examples of humorous language mishaps, should set one thinking about the international linguist community’s apparent repressed desire to cannibalize their maternal forebears. in this essay i will
What should you be reading to maximize your language learning?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of literature we can learn from. Baby books bore you, but you’re not ready for any type of novel, so what’s left?
Here are some tips
For beginner/A1/A2 learners
Watch a YouTube video in your target language, then read the comments
you’ll already have vocabulary from watching the video, most of the comments will probably use that vocab
it’s a short enough text that you won’t get fatigued
the only downside is that sometimes people utilize abbreviations and slang terms, but even these are good to know
Read news headlines and if you find one you understand almost fully, try to read the full article
sometimes the vocabulary used is not common in everyday usage, but it’s a total win for an A1 learner to fully read and mostly understand any text
while vocab is not used everyday, it will give you the ammunition to talk about that particular topic
Watch Netflix in target language with subtitles in the same language
believe it or not, you will learn to read better, especially because you don’t have to understand written description of visuals (usually uses very niche vocab) or emotion
and now you can slow down or speed up
I watched DARK in German before I felt like I could read a book, and I understood 85% of it. This is because I looked up some vocabulary in the first episodes and they continued to use it throughout the show so it really cemented in my head to the point where I don’t even think about it. Now, I had to rewatch some conversations the characters had, but that’s much better for understanding than switching it to English or looking up full phrases and sentences.
For intermediate/B1/B2 learners
read fanfiction
it’s ALWAYS good to read about something you’re interested in so if you like any major movies, books, television, this is the perfect option for you
most people use relatively basic language and you can choose the length
find a comic book or graphic novel
like watching tv, that visual aid really helps with understanding of the plot without all those tricky descriptions
read a book in your target language that you’ve read and loved in your native language
this is by far my favorite way
you don’t have to worry about trying to understanding the bigger picture because you already know what’s happening/what will happen, you really have to discover the meaning of each sentence and then you begin to picture the scene using only your target language
Check out my other post for methods of how to get the most out of reading !

Test your listening proficiency
Here’s another test from LanguageTrainers.com, which tests elementary and intermediate listening levels in the following languages:
Arabic
Chinese
Danish
Dutch
English
French
German
Greek
Hebrew
Italian
Japanese
Korean
Norwegian
Portuguese
Russian
Spanish (European)
Spanish
Swedish
Turkish
They also have a written, multiple choice test available here, which I talk about here.
This was really fun to do and made me realize once again that I don’t spend enough time working on listening skills 😅 But I guess I understand more than I think I do!? Part three was especially fun because the audio and related questions were all about languages, dialects, accents, etc.
It seems that the transcripts/scenarios are the same for each language, so beware if you want to test yourself for multiple languages: you will probably already know the answers after you’ve taken it once.
language learning (affectionate): there are so many words!!
language learning (derogatory): there are so. many. words.
The Big List of Resources for Learning Danish
I plan on updating this as often as I come across something worthy of being added to this list. I’ll make a post to let you know that something new has been added so you don’t need to check back all the time.

Having a hard time explaining to people that studying 4 languages doesn't mean I now speak 5 languages, but actually something more like, -7.3 instead

Here is a list of french terms used to talk about queer culture, some info and also ressources you might want to check out. Let me point out right away that I indicated slurs because they have been reclaimed by the community. I’m hoping no one here will use them to hurt anyone.

They have been criticized and/or sued for homophobia, racism and children instrumentalization.
While gay women can give blood since 2002 (had been forbidden to ‘gay and bisexual people with multiple partners’ since 1983 because of health prejudice linked to AIDS), gay men can since july 2016 if they have been single for a year. It’s still asked on the form when you go give blood currently.
Books :
*french theory*
Queer Zones + Sexpolitiques by trans activist and uni teacher Sam or Marie-Hélène Bourcier (who introduced queer theory to France, where gender studies are barely a thing)(I’m mentioning his dead name bc the transition is recent and most of his work is only available under it)
La Pensée Straight, Monique Wittig, 1992
C'est pour un garçon ou pour une fille ? Georges-Claude Guilbert, 2004
*french fiction*
Le Journal, Fabrice Néaud, 1996 : a man draws the story of how he fell in love with another man then gets dumped, when gay men had to hide. It’s very pretty, very sad and absolutely beautiful.
En finir avec Eddy Bellegueule, Edouard Louis, 2014 : autobiographic novel from a bright young man ; his life, his bullies, his acceptance.
Sodome et Gomorrhe, Marcel Proust, 1921 : not a gay novel but a gay relationship within one of the biggest french novels of the last century.
Le bleu est une couleur chaude, Julie Marot, 2010 : you might have heard of La Vie d’Adèle aka Blue is the warmest color. It’s from that comic.
Mémoires d’Hadrien, Marguerite Yourcenar, 1951 : a book about Hadrian, roman emperor, who built a wall and was very gay.
Corydon, André Gide, 1911 : essay about homosexuality
Corps à corps, journal de SIDA, Alain Emmanuel Dreuilhe, 1987 : autobiographic, a man’s fight with AIDS.
Sarrasine, Honoré de Balzac, 1830 (trans, gay, cross dressing, v v pretty)

Les onze mille Verges, Éric Lipmann, 1974 (after Guillaume Apollinaire’s novel, 1907, that’s amazing and pretty graphic)(the title means literally ‘the 11 000 penises’) (porn, gay, orgies, bdsm, necrophilia…)
Guillaume et les garçons, Guillaume Gallienne, 2013 (trans, sexuality)
Yves Saint-Laurent, Jalil Lespert, 2014 (gay)

Bonjour maman! I hope you are doing well. I am an avid reader and lover of poetry and I have wanted to read French poetry for a long, long time. Could you please suggest some poems/collections (B1 - B2) for me?
Hello dear,
It would be hard to make a universal list for this because B1/B2 can look many different ways, the best advice I have is to check out famous authors and see at first glance if their stuff looks too hard for you or not. Here are the basics and an example:
B1/B2 with a good dictionary:
Correspondance by Charles Baudelaire
Dans les bois by Paul Verlaine
La demoiselle by Théophile Gautier
Les malheureux by Louise Ackermann ♀
Crépuscule by Guillaume Apollinaire
Les yeux d'Elsa by Louis Aragon (which I would claim to be the most beautiful love poem in the world)
L'hirondelle by Sophie d'Arbouville ♀
Chanson à boire by Nicolas Boileau
La nuit de printemps by Théodore de Banville
L'ennui de Léonore by Victoire Babois ♀
Les feuilles mortes by Jacques Prévert
Regrets d'amour by Pierre Corneille
Des vivants et des morts - Andrée Chedid ♀
Le désir by Anatole France
À Aurore by George Sand ♀
Par un mauvais temps by Alfred de Musset
Melancholia by Victor Hugo
Le bonheur est mélancolique by Cécile Sauvage ♀
C1/C2 but give it a try anyway:
Première soirée by Arthur Rimbaud
Luth compagnon de ma calamité by Louise Labé ♀
La sagesse by Alphonse de Lamartine
Prière de Socrate by Gérard de Nerval
Le temps de vivre by Anna de Noailles ♀
Le songe by Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve
L'âme errante by Marceline Desbordes-Valmore ♀
Les fleurs by Stéphane Mallarmé
Le lundi à Vêpres by Jean Racine
C'était novembre by Vénus Khoury-Ghata (1937-) ♀
Holy shit:
Escargots by Francis Ponge (XX, surrealism)
Nous ne sommes fâchés by Joachim Du Bellay (XVI)
Ballade des dames du temps jadis by François Villon (XV)
Lai du Frêne by Marie de France ♀ (XII)
Je brûle avec mon coeur by Théodore Aggripa d'Aubigné (XVI)
Plus:
Entire anthology about female poetry
Hope this helps! x

hi everyone! something i've been interested in trying lately is a collaborative reading recommendation list, so if you'd be interested too please fill out this form! i want to try it out with spanish as a test run and see how it goes and then go from there
basically you leave your url if you want, the book, the level for learners, the type of reading material (novel, play, poetry, etc.), and a little blurb about it-- you could do a summary, something like "if you like x book or x trope you'll like x book", or anything really! once we have a good amount of recommendations i will post them all for everyone to see. this will work the more people participate, and you can submit as many recommendations as you'd like!
here's the form, i'd appreciate it if you spread this around as well :)
English books I loved:
On earth we're briefly gorgeous (Ocean Vuong) - About his growing up as a vietnamese-american gay man with his vietnamese mother. - "'Eat,' she says. 'Swallow. Your bruises are inside it now. Swallow and it won't hurt anymore.' And so he eats. He is eating still"; "He loves me, he loves me not, we are taught to say as we tear the flower away from it's flowerness. To arrive at love, then, is to arrive through obliteration. Eviscerate me, we mean to say, and I'll te you the truth"; "In a world as myriad as ours, the gaze is a singular act; to look at something is to fill your whole life with it, if only briefly" - written as a letter to his mother who cannot read
The Canterville Ghost (Oscar Wilde) - A ghost trying to haunt an american family that just moved into his house but it is hilariously depressing him.
The importance of being Earnest (Oscar Wilde) - two men with a second personality for travels get caught in their lies, hilarious
House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski) - A house with strange dimensions, a book in a book in a book, strange layout, a masterpiece - "They say truth stands the test of time. I can think of no greater comfort than knowing this document failed such test"; "Her smile, I'm sure, burnt Rome to the ground"
Desire (Haruki Murakami, short stories) - Several stories about desire (not only sexual), my favorite is "the second bakery attack"
Creativity Inc. (Ed Catmull -> head animator/boss of pixar thingy) - non-fiction, talks about how to make creativity in a business setting work, includes a lot of the story of pixar and it's movies, loved it
My favorite book, though it has been a while since I read it:
thanks for the recs!! I loooved on earth we're briefly gorgeous, but haven't read any of the other ones :)
