I love the idea that Dean is just out of the loop trying to save the world for a lot of 2005 so when he hears about a new cowboy movie that was up for an academy award a while back he rents it. He watches it with Sam while they are in a shitty motel, and then has to sit there trying not to break down completely while Sam watches like a normal person, tender and appreciative. Meanwhile Dean has to go for a drive immediately after and so he can pull over to ugly cry for forty minutes and then gets so much junk food and eats until he’s sick. Years later, he shows it to Cas and he cries openly through the whole thing while Cas holds him.
