i drew this soon after my kitty passed away, and i thought it would be cool to have a spirit cat so i could always have her with me. it was very healing to work on this <3

hello, thanks for asking! my advice depends on whether you’re new to embroidery all together or not, but for embroidering on clothing, i’d say:

1. embroider garments that you don’t plan on washing very much. best practice is to just wash by hand or not at all, but you can machine wash hand embroidery with minimal damage IF you plan for it (ie. by doing point 2)

2. use small stitch lengths or couch down long stitches. generally, i try to keep my stitches to less than .5 inches long, but if the design necessitates longer stitches, i secure the long stitch with a tiny stitch going over it. this prevents snagging and minimizes weird wrinkling in the wash. a pocket flap that i embroidered using this method in a bit of a weird way:

when i did this spiderweb, i made sure that all of the longer threads were overlapped by shorter ones :) this is also a good example of what happens to embroidery when you machine wash it. ironing can help, but if you hate the wrinkles just don't wash it.

3. choose placements where the back side is easy to reach! i have made the mistake of embroidering the knee of a pant leg and probably will in the future, but it will save you a lot of frustration if you choose placements like pocket flaps or shirt collars.

4. vary the number (and shade) of threads you use. this is purely stylistic, but i have found that using less threads to do small details and mixing color shades gives a lot of depth to your work! (the ferns below are an example of both techniques)

one of my partner’s cats loves kneading soft things, so i salvaged some fabric from an old panda onesie and i tried this pattern by @daftpatience :) i highly recommend.

some fern embroidery for spring <3

i’ve FINALLY finished these tap shorts (that i started literally years ago lol). they are entirely hand sewn, and are made out of scraps of an old bedsheet and lace from a vintage pillowcase :)
