I will never understand how normalized it is to put cameras in your home now. I can recognize some scenarios where it makes sense- if I had a stalker for example, but like. It would have to be That Big for me to consider it. People today use it to tell their kids it's time to stop playing video games and do homework like. Like?? I do not understand how you don't understand how harmful it is to raise kids with the sense they're always being watched like why does anyone under normal circumstances invite this into their home
saw a video recently, recorded by a camera in a child's bedroom, of a toddler reading her favorite book after bed time. her mom went in and told her it was time to sleep, and she said, 'but i just love reading so much.' her mom laughed indulgently and told her to sleep once the book was finished. she agreed, but before the video ended, she said, 'you're so silly for watching me!'
she was smiling when she said it, but i found that one sentence so abysmal. that toddler knew her mom didn't just happen to come and check on her. she understands that there is a camera in her room by which her mom (and as far as she might comprehend, any adult) can access her in her private space, in her private time, at all times.
can you imagine? never on your own. can't sleep? too bad. you're a child and the grown ups are watching you. lie in bed in the dark. pretend to sleep. behave.
it's 10 pm and the rest of the house is enjoying winding down after a long day. your parents don't need to worry about putting on a professional face like they do at work. your older siblings get to be themselves instead of who they have to be at school. everyone gets to relax. but not you.
it's 10 pm, and you're three years old, and you must continue to do everything right, because they are watching you.
oh, and when you don't behave, if it's cute enough, your mother will post footage of you in your bedroom for millions of strangers to watch!
this is such a fantastic and reassuring response
Recently had the pleasure of illustrating the hardback cover of Illumicrate's edition of Blood Bound by Ellis Hunter! I don't get a ton of commissions for animal-only covers so this was a real treat for me. Big thank you to Illumicrate for trusting me with this.
what if you and I were two sheep being pastured on a small tidal island off the coast of Wales

USians, find your reps and call them. This is yet another book ban bill targeting transgender people and anything that mentions race, civil rights, or historical figures of color.
HR 8705 text if you want to dig into it.
Sample script for blue reps:
My name is [_____] and I live in [zip code/district/neighborhood]. I'm calling about HR 8705, the latest attempt by the GOP to erase entire communities from the story of the United States. If passed, it will have a suppressive and damaging effect on our schools and libraries. Teaching a full and honest picture of U.S. history is not indoctrination. Editing and sanitizing that history in favor of patriotic propaganda and white nationalist talking points, however, is. Please do everything in your power to block this horrible bill.
Sample script for red or purple reps:
My name is [_____] and I live in [zip code/district/neighborhood]. I'm calling about HR 8705, the so-called Civics and History Advancement to Restore Learning, Integrity, and Education Act. That's a lot of words being thrown around to say the federal government should get to decide what our local schools teach and how they teach it. If it passes, it will be such a huge waste of time and money. I am opposed to this kind of big government overreach, and I hope Representative [____] opposes it too.
Yeah. Contact them about this one. It made it out of committee and currently has about a 1:3 chance of passing.
An extra useful phrase since this is in the House, and this is an election year for every single one of them:
"Right now, I don't know who I will be voting for in November"
Tell them that, then tell them that you're going to be watching this bill, and what they do about it WILL impact your vote. It does not matter if you are actually undecided. It doesn't matter if you would rather eat glass than re-elect that guy. Whenever you place these calls, you are an undecided independent swing voter.
Or, if you can play the part in person, "I voted against you in the last election, but I've been paying attention since then, and I was leaning towards voting for you this time, but not if you support this."
As for the actual bill, this one isn't written in crayon by an idiot. It would be much harder to weaponize in malicious compliance, and harder to sue into oblivion.
Go place a call. Or send physical letters. And if there's a townhall, brace up for a terrible time, and attend.
thatâsâŚ.extremely Celtic of him
if I had a dollar for every time this happened to an early Welsh saint, Iâd have several dollars
Mesh networking: how you communicate when China censors the internet.
How do you communicate when the government censors the internet? With a peer-to-peer mesh broadcasting network that doesnât use the internet.
Thatâs exactly what Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters are doing now, thanks to San Fransisco startup Bridgefyâs Bluetooth-based messaging app. The protesters can communicate with each other â and the public â using no persistent managed network.
The app can connect people via standard Bluetooth across an entire city, thanks to a mesh network. Chatting is speediest with people who are close, of course, within a hundred meters (330 feet), but you can also chat with people who are farther away. Your messages will simply âhopâ via other Bridgefy usersâ phones until they find your intended target.
Thatâs incredibly futuristic
Pi Zero W is $10 and has built in Bluetooth connectivity. You can find Solar USB Power Packs for ~$25. So for less than $50 and a little time investment to load some programs you can have an autonomous bluetooth repeater. I think they only run at Class 2 or 2.5mw so 10 meter range⌠but there are DIY solutions to amplify it to Class 1 for 100 meter range. But even at 10 meters, given this sort of program uses a packet delivery system, if you are constantly on the move youâre effectively a postman for the system as it will transmit every time it comes in range of another compatible program.

Every once in a while I've seen the sentiment like "I can't believe I'm still blocked by [person] for [thing that happened forever ago]" and I dunno, I kind of operate under the assumption that most people don't revisit their blocklists. Least of all to pass through it and judge which accounts are now unblock-worthy.
Like if you found me slightly annoying once in 2016 I simply assume I'm blocked forever.
I feel like a lot of people fundamentally do not grasp the point of a block list. They think itâs a burn book or something??? Like they think you actively hold a grudge against the people on it????? When in reality, a block list is a list of forgetting. The whole point is to not think about whatâs on it.
itâs a shame more vampire media doesnât pull from vampire bat behavior because theyâre such sweeties. they can only survive their incredibly specialized diet because bats will share blood with colony members that didnât find a meal! thereâs evidence that suggests the donors sometimes initiate this behavior themselves by approaching hungry bats! the colonies are mostly harems of females with a few males but theyâve been observed letting unrelated males in when it gets cold so they can all stay warm! cute little social critters!

we need to instill a new storytelling rule of thumb into people called "show don't tweet" where we encourage them to put all pertinent canon information into the actual story and its official supplemental material instead of using reddit AMAs as lore dlcs
