She stepped out from their weekend rental, headed down to the beach.
The sun was just beginning to rise.
She had arranged this Valentineâs weekend in the hopes that it would bring them closer together. Â Sheâd sworn to herself that this was her last ditch effort to make this long-distance thing work.
Sheâd gotten a photo-shoot here, and the locale was perfect. It had taken a lot of cajoling and convincing, but he had eventually agreed to come out to see her.  She thought this would be an ideal way for them to spend some quality time together, pack away her hurt feelings from Christmas, and hopefully take their relationship to the next level.
After all, he owed her this. Christmas had been a fiasco, and not at all what she had anticipated.  She was his girlfriend, right? He should want to be with her, want to show her off to his friends and family.
The sun was awakening now, the yellow orange of dawn began to cast its glow across the water, the foamy waves brightening. It promised to be another beautiful and glorious day.
So why does she have this gnawing, empty feeling in the pit of her stomach?
She looked down at her phone, shuffled through some of her latest downloads. Pressed play on a track. The music started.
All the pretty girls like Samuel
Oh, he really doesn't shareâŚ
Although it's more than he can handle
Life is anything but fair, life is anything but fair
Oh ohâŚ.that was so true, she thought. He really doesnât share. For as much as they have talked, for the amount that heâs talked â he has not told much of any importance about himself.
Just as soon as they turn older
He'll come and sweep them off their feet
It's only making me feel smaller
All the hidden love beneathâŚ
She wondered if that was true though â was he indeed hiding some big emotional truth? She had suspected for a while that perhaps he was. He was deadly gorgeous though, charming and sweet, yet strong and silent too. A smile that lit up the room, he looked at you in a way that made you feel important. Jesus, did he really did sweep her off her feet?
So won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
You lay me, won't you lay me down
He still hadnât initiated anything on his own, why was it that she had to do all the work?
All alone, alone again
No one lends a helping hand
I have waited, I have waited
Takes its toll, my foolish pride
How long before I see the light
I have waited, I have waited
For you to lay me downâŚ
For the first time, she felt alone. Her friends had warned her against this cross-continent arrangement. Theyâd seen something that she hadnât, or perhaps she just didnât want to see. Some of them didnât take to him at all, theyâd told her in no uncertain terms what they thought of him. Sheâd dismissed back then, too foolish in love, perhaps.
Sail on by, sail on by for now
They play naked in the water
You know it's hard, heaven knows I've tried
But it just keeps getting harder
So won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Sheâs not sure how much longer she can do this⌠itâs just too hard. Sheâs pretty sure that the writing is on the wall for this relationship.
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, won't you lay
Oh, won't you lay me, oh won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me, oh won't you lay me down
Oh, won't you lay me, won't you lay me down
Won't you lay me down
Sheâs leaving in two months, to start a new life. Theyâll be closer, not so far apart. She hopes that he is going to be a part of this new life, but not if itâs going to be like this. She took a picture of the sun rising over the ocean, posted it and added the song.
