i rewatch this show lot (like once or twice a year) and i always catch new things or get a new interpretation its enrichment for me

okay so /cracks knuckles

the show does kind of explain the name origins- not explicitly but theres dialogue and you can make the connection (also in the og script there really was just three of them and another was added when the script was revised)

so the dialogue in question is this:

Project Incubus was originally only three individuals. Once we added the fourth, things got out of control - priest, 2x03

vogel is the forth rowdy and more notably he is much younger than the others (for added context martin is considered one, gripps is two and cross is three- this is going by the numbers on their jumpsuits)

and project incubus was one of the first blackwing projects so presumably they were bought in 1988 (when blackwing first started, but i know it wasnt called blackwing originally- but riggins states it was bw specifically they were taken in for. the quote in question is in 1x05. i cant be bothered to look for it im sorry😭just trust me its that ep)

so, this is now in fanon/interpretation territory because the show does not give us a confirmed answer, but what i think is either: - martin/gripps/cross all knew eachother before blackwing and were calling themselves rowdy 3 back then - they met in blackwing and cause there were only 3, hence the name. and theyve been that for so long that when vogel showed up they werent gonna change it (plus rebellious punks, ofc theyre gonna reject the logic)

personally i think its the second option

I highly recommend this. Costumers and composers and lighters are also telling a layer of story. Creature design is telling a layer of story. Camera shots are telling a layer of story. Props are telling a layer of story. Sets are telling a layer of story. Hair and makeup are telling a layer of story.

Paying attention to these elements ALSO reminds you that it IS a story, it's the work of hundreds of people behind the camera, people that aren't supposed to be seen and will sometimes never be seen.
