───── disclaimers ─────
★ i post about fictional scenarios that include objectionable themes, such as incest and rape. obviously this does not reflect my opinion of these abuses in reality. don't follow if discussions of these topics will upset you.
★ i do not trigger tag my posts unless i intend for them to gain reach outside my audience.
★ i occasionally speak about "men" in a casual context. while i am aware that there are nuances to discussions of gender and societal hierarchies, that nuance is not always necessary in casual contexts, so please don't assume the worst of me if i say i don't like men.

cannot stop thinking about this video. it should have like 5 million views. the indigenous australian yuin mob had spiritual and political relationships with another freaking species of non-human people for TEN THOUSAND YEARS before violent white settlers came over and destroyed that interspecies symbiotic partnership on top of (or as part of) all of the human horrors of imperialism. can you imagine the kind of mutually beneficial, multi-species stewarding of earth we could have were it not for the many settler-colonial projects all over the globe! it's mindblowingly devastating! but also there are other cultures of earthlings out there that we could be allowed to participate in if we can turn this fucking ship around. this planet is so awe-inspiring and striking and fragile. orcas are so fucking cool. there's a whole other multicultural world of people under the sea we are barely beginning to gain awareness of. it's fucking bonkers.

people who say they think female characters are fundamentally uninteresting are genuinely the weakest links to me like if you cant even make yourself care about a FICTIONAL woman u kind of need to die slow
re: my last reblog I am endlessly fascinated by homo naledi. in the middle pliestocene - this places them alongside early homo sapiens! - there existed a wholely unique species of human in south africa which, to this day, has only ever been found in a single cave system. they were built with proportions that suggested they were very much capable of long-distance upright walking like homo sapiens, but with other anatomy that suggested a largely arboreal lifestyle. their skulls (and therefore brains) were more relative in size to a chimpanzee, suggesting a limited mental capacity, and yet excavation sites have revealed early stone tools which cannot be attributed to any other known species of human in the area at the time.
but the most interesting (though debated) part of the naledi is the place of their discovery. the rising star cave, located in the bloubank river valley, is a complex cave system with many steep drops and tight passageways, so tight that youd have to crawl on your stomach to get through. through two of these passageways is whats called the dinaledi chamber, which is where the fossilized remains were found. the hotly debated question at the heart of this discovery: how did they get there?
my personal favorite hypothesis is that this is evidence of early human burial rituals. given the number of bodies (at least 15) discovered in such a confined space, some scientists believe that the naledi used the cave as a burial ground for their dead, much akin to the modern human ritual of burial. this would suggest (given their limited brain size) that some human rituals run deeper than mere intelligence or mental discernment, and that we may carry some of the same instincts we've had for hundreds of thousands of years. genuinely one of my favorite pieces of ancient human history.
if you are going to make a post that goes “people have always been people” you are required to include an example from Africa or the precolonial Americas or Southeast Asia and if you don’t, you’re getting sent to history jail. I make the rules
truly mystified by what people perceive to be blonde hair. if that shit is not light and very yellow how is it not fucking brown hair. I know a lot of people who were blonde as children continue to identify as such as they get older because of like white supremacy making being blonde feel more desirable than the alternative or something but this is crazy

on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)
I genuinely appreciate how obsession doesn't try to frame bear as morally grey but just fully leans into how deplorable he is. a lesser movie would have tried to give him redeeming moments along the way but no, at every single crossroads bear makes the wrong choice. when the customer service rep asks him if he wants to cancel his wish, he says no, and asks to alter it. when nikki, the real one, begs him to kill her, he asks her "if it would be so bad to love him", and right at the end, backs out of killing himself and tries to throw the pills up. he is the villain, not another victim, not a confused, cowardly boy, the villain.
I cant even articulate how pleasantly surprised I was by this movie. I am genuinely not one to react much at horror movies - maybe ill get tense or anxious, but I can name VERY few times ive actually been heart-pounding, jumping and screaming scared by a movie without cheap jumpscares. the way obsession strikes such a vibe, and the acting choices by inde navarratte, culminate in one of the most unsettling experiences I have ever witnessed. her uncanny movements and the sheer expressiveness she packs into a single shift in expression were fucking brilliant. good lord everyone go watch obsession right now im not kidding
