You ever hear that old chestnut about how most people neglect the part of the story of Icarus where he also had to avoid flying too low, lest the spray of the sea soak his feathers and cause him to fall and drown? You ever think about how different the world would be if Icarus died that way instead? If the idiom was to Fly To Close To The Sea? A warning against playing it far too safe, about not stretching your wings and soaring properly? You ever think about how Icarus died because he was happy?
I do not disagree with this at all, but there's something you have to keep in mind whenever you're studying the classics: everyone used to live on the edge of a knife.
Everyone- kings, priests, 'nobles', scholars, craftsmen, and ordinary people alike- was subject to the will of the harvest and the will of the weather. One drought was enough to cause mass famine and mass death. Five years of bad weather was enough to destroy a kingdom.
50% of all children born- to king or slave alike- would die before they reached the age of 5. (In the worst shitholes on earth today, that number is 14%. In countries with access to proper medical care, it's less than 1%.)
A lot of stories written in the past- Greek myths, the Bible, the Torah, or Chinese legends- caution people against hubris. If you are living at the edge of a knife, any risk you might take doesn't just harm you. It harms your family, your community, and (if it's bad enough) possibly the entire world.
If every man in your village goes off to war and plays hero, you might not have enough men come back to harvest your crops. If you leave your family behind to go off and seek your fortune, and you fail to find your fortune, you're risking your family not having enough to eat, your children (or your parents) dying while you're gone, or dishonour and scandal on everyone you care about.
....If you have access to Tumblr, you no longer live on the edge of a knife. Your society has enough food to feed you, regardless of a bad year; if you take risks, the person they're most likely to impact is you. We've invented wings of steel that can fly so high that there is no "air"; the sun is no longer our enemy.
You have the power to be happy in a way your distant ancestors could never have dreamed of. They fought like hell to get you here. Reach for it.
Starting tomorrow, Iām planning on watching TADC as a whole and I was wondering if you happen to have any post-finale essay video recommendationsāwhether it be from your channel or anyone else.
Oi, Iāve actually got a playlist of essays and shorts Iāve done for the show on my channel!
That aside, no other essays are specifically leaping to mind, but I HIGHLY recommend watching @ohnoitstbskyenās reaction/commentary videos on the show.
Guy has shorts going over the character designs, and (admittedly very lengthy and rambly) commentaries on every episode- easily some of the most interesting, insightful, and on-point discussion of the show Iāve encountered.
If you'd like to not have to spend 32 hours listening to me ramble in my reactions, wait a few (fingers crossed!) weeks and I'll have a more concise video essay out about the character design and some of the themes of the show.
First draft of the script is about 3/4 of the way done, and only about 2000 of the words are spent analyzing the first thirty seconds of episode one.

Never met either of my grandfathers. By all accounts maternal was an absolute G and paternal was a total shmuck.

...Costume looks good, though the color grading could use some SEVERE work.
The voice...is a white man doing a Romani accent, but it's also close to how I've always pictured Doom's voice when reading comics...
I don't know how to feel about this one. How about you.
Liked it better than the first trailer. Still feels like itās lacking some sauce.
I feel like this marketing campaign has suffered from the need to keep so much under wraps, cause I still canāt quite get a āfixā on this movie if Iām honest
NO SERIOUSLY!!!!
KINGDOM HEARTS FANS WE ARE SO BACK
THE DROUGHT IS OVERRRRR
Iām hyperventilating.
God this series NEEDS to be peak. KH has been an insular, stagnant fanbase way too goddamn long.
This show has the opportunity to bring in a whole wave of new fans that the property sorely needs.
Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you donāt like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lolĀ
a short selection of concepts and phrases that used to be commonplace in fandom and weād really benefit from making that a thing again:
NOTP: the opposite of an OTP (One True Pairing). It is a ship a fan strongly dislikes. The word is a portmanteau of ānoā and āOTPā and thus is not a contraction of any particular phrase.
Squick: anything that is a deep-seated, visceral turn-off. Squicks may be shared by many fans or be specific to one; one personās kink may be another personās squick.
YKINMKATO, or kink-tomato: Your Kink Is Not My Kink, And Thatās Okay: used to indicate support for fannish diversity and to distinguish between disapproval or kink shaming and simply having different taste.
DLDR: Donāt Like, Donāt Read: a phrase used to warn against complaints about an aspect of fic or meta. A ālive and let liveā philosophy of fandom, which places the responsability for avoiding content one doesnāt want to see on the side of the fanwork consumer, rather that on the creatorās.
SALS: Ship And Let Ship: similar to the above specifically about shipping tastes.
YMMV: Your Mileage May Vary: a phrase used to acknowledge that any given individualās personal opinion on the topic at hand may differ due to their own tastes, standards, values, experiences, etc.
As the OP points out, all of these crucially imply no moral judgment of what theyāre designing.
(definitions lifted more or less wholesale from fanloreās relevant pages)
bring the healthy fun back to fandom!

not to "trying to be chill but can't help noticing how misogyny bleeds through the cracks etc etc" but once you realize that almost none of the cute disney comic relief sidekicks are women you can't unsee it. like that thing only exists to do some slapstick and look cute for plushies. why can't it be a woman. why are ALL of them he/him. it's driving me fucking insane
Itās because theyāre insecure and afraid of being called sexist if they show a female character as the recipient of slapstick or otherwise pathetic/the butt of jokes in any way.
