Little comic thingy (actually the first comic I've ever done lol) based on Device Theory and the idea that DEVICE_FRIEND is just Gaster's anti-Annoying Dog OC

âYou get hunted too?â
Virgil quickly waved his hands. âOh no, I mean like, my Poâparents would get real worried.â
âOh.â Danny drooped. âRight, obviouslyââ He paused. Blinked. Then shot up close to Virgilâs face. âYour parents know your identity?!â

One too many panicked whispers down the street, pointing shaky fingers high above, led Virgil groaning and flying past the cloud cover that evening. And the day before his barely started English assignment was due, of course.
It took a while to actually find what folks were so worried about; heâd searched all over the general area with nothing but a few disgruntled geese for his troubles.
Virgil wondered if maybe heâd get lucky and just find Teresa flapping lazily through the pink-orange sky. Itâd be nice to catch up, see how she was doing and all. Sheâd probably have a good story or two for them to laugh over.
âTeresa, where you at?â he called. There was a faint and distinctly person-like sound and Virgil started towards it. He sent a small zap to disperse a cloud in the way and scrambled back at the yipe that came from it. âShit, why didnât you answerâ?â
Someoneânot Teresaâappeared, wide eyed and floating while curled in a tight ball. They were silent and looked like a cardboard cutout the way they didnât move an inch.
A kid with mussed white hair, green eyes and tanned nose rimmed red, and in some kind of glowing jumpsuit.
âWoah, hey there.â The kid startled, jerking back with his arms covering his chest. Virgil held up his hands. âItâs alright, I just wanna talk.â
The kid gave him a once over, eyes lingering on Virgilâs disc before slumping. âI donât, but I get the feeling youâre not leaving.â
âNope,â Virgil said, smiling slightly. âStatic doesnât just leave crying kids floating in the sky on their own.â
âAnd youâre Static?â
âYup. Unless you see anyone else up here with blue threads and rocking dreads.â Virgil made an exaggerated look around and the kidâs lips twitched up slightly.
âDanny,â the kid said. He hugged his knees. âDonât worry, Iâm just passing through.â
âSeems like youâre sitting still to me.â Virgil popped a squat. âCâmon, itâs just us up here. Tell me whatâs on your mind.â
There was a pause, then Dannyâs face crumbled. âI canât do it anymore.â He curled up tighter. âSneaking around the security system, fighting all the time, barely sleepingâI just canât.â
Shit, this was a lot more serious than he thought. Virgil spoke softer, like heâd glimpse his Pops do at the community centre, âIf someoneâs forcing you to do somethingââ
âWhat? No, not likeâŚâ Danny made a noise of frustration, a flush crawling along his cheeks. âThey try to shoot at me, not pressure me to try drugs.â A mumbled, I wouldnât put it past them if it meant catching me, was just barely audible under his breath.
âSomeoneâs hurting you?â Virgil pressed, forcing himself not to float closer. Forcing him to focus on the here and now, than trying to protect from the has and been.
âYeah, obviously.â Danny sniffed. âThey go after all of us.â
The flush returned, stronger. âNo! Ghosts, I mean ghosts!â Danny covered his face. âWhyâd you have to go and make it seem like Iâm actually some kind of hero. Now Iâm probably green as an apple!â
He was, actually; like a brightly glowing, neon green apple. Virgil would say as much, if it wasnât for one thing:Â
âIâm not a ghost?â he said, confusion colouring his voice. âI thought you were a Bang Baby.â
Dannyâs nose scrunched up. âWhy would a baby have a gun?â
Virgil squawked a laugh before covering it up with a cough. âLetâs start over.â He held out a hand without moving closer. âIâm Static, hero of Dakota City.â When Danny just stared at his hand for several awkward moments, Virgil pulled it back to rub his neck.Â
â...Phantom. Danny Phantom.â The guy floundered, mouth opening and closing before settling on saying, âJust a ghost.â
âSo, the people who were shooting at you?â
Danny sighed. âGhost hunters.â
Virgil supposed that made sense; where there were creatures of the unknown, there were people whoâd wanna catch them. Didnât explain the other stuff though. âAnd the bit about a security system?â
Danny grumbled, âItâs the only way to get pastâuh,â His eyes dipped down again. âthe portal. The one that connects the Ghost Zone to here.â
âEarth-here or here-here?â Virgil asked, pointing below him. âBecause if thereâs a portal to a ghost dimension in my city, Iâd really like to know about it.â
âEarth-here.â The guy cracked a smile. âTrust me, if there was a portal, youâd know.â
Vague and unhelpful, but as long as there was no portal, Virgil would let it be. âGood; my family would kill me if I had to start fighting ghosts too.â Dannyâs eyes snapped back to Virgilâs and he winced. âPoor choice of words.â
âNo, itâs not thatâŚâ Danny uncurled completelyâthe first time since Virgil found him up here. He looked weirdly hopeful. âYou get hunted too?â
Virgil quickly waved his hands. âOh no, I mean like, my Poâparents would get real worried.â
âOh.â Danny drooped. âRight, obviouslyââ He paused. Blinked. Then shot up close to Virgilâs face. âYour parents know your identity?!â
Virgil leaned back on his disc. âWoah Casper!â Danny had an odd look in his wide eyes. Maybe he was really invested in the superhero thing; he did mention something about being a hero himself. âYeah, heâthey know now. Itâs just a part of my life, nothing big.â
âNothing big?!â Danny sneered, small glowing tears pooling in his eyes. âItâs everything, itâsââ Abruptly, he snapped his mouth shut and looked away, floating back. âReally cool. That they support you. Real life is a lot better than comics, huh?â Danny rubbed harshly at his face grumbling about bugs so high up in the clouds.
The ghost kid was holding back, clearly, and that would not do in Staticâs book. If he didnât want to talk about what got him alone up here in the first place, then Virgil could at least entertain him for a while. âYou wanna take a guess?â
Danny didnât look up at him, but he didnât curl into that sad little ball again either. âDid your mom find your suit in the closet or something?â
Virgil allowed himself a moment to imagine it. He already knew she was proud of him and what heâd done, but the thought of her finding out on her own⌠Virgil smiled. âThat wouldâve been better than how it really happened.â
Brow furrowed, Danny finally caught Virgilâs gaze. âDid they catch you sneaking in?â
âNope,â Virgil singsonged.
Danny frowned. â...Outed on live television?â
âEugh,â Virgil shivered, rubbing his arms. âDefinitely worse. Total nightmare scenario, but not what happened.â
âWell, short of being a government experimentââ Wait what. ââI canât really think of anything else.â
âFor real?â Danny nodded. âDude, supervillain blabbing!â Not exactly, but the news was still talking about his Popsâ kidnapping and, really, it was Omnaraâs fault in the first place.Â
Danny tilted his head. âLike⌠on accident?â
Virgil laughed, short and hard. âOn purpose! I thought you read comics?â
âI do, butâ!â
âDanny, my guy,â Virgil took a chance, hovering closer. Danny didnât move away. âCriminals are always trying to figure out who the handsome guy under this mask is, so they can stop me from meddling.â
â...All the ghosts I fight already know who I am,â Danny offered, hesitantly. âAnd most of the time we donât rat each other out to ghost hunters.â
Virgil didnât realize snitching was even remotely an issue with ghosts, but then he also didnât know ghosts were real until today. âAt least you got that going for you! Speaking of ghost solidarity, whatâre your ghost friends like?â Bit heavy handed for the segway, but Virgil figured itâd probably be a good idea to keep Danny talking while he could.
Danny snorted. âWeird, annoying, and nice. Sometimes all three.â He scratched at his chest, right over the silver logo. âI mostly hang out with humans though.â
âYeah? What made you choose humans?â Virgil asked. ââCause I can tell you, we can be mad annoying.â
A bright, echoing laugh. âOh, I know. My friends are the worst.â
âI think that titleâs reserved for my buddy, Gear.â Virgil rolled his eyes. âHe loves tossing his misfiring inventions at me; canât tell you how many times Iâve been tied upâliterallyâwhile he works the kinks out of something.â
âNo no, Sam and Tucker are awful.â Danny crossed his legs, bobbing slightly. âLike one time, they got into this big fight about vegans versus meat eaters and they organized these huge protests in, like, one night and set up these stages and junk outside the school!â He laughed holding his stomach. âThere was this really strong ghost on the loose too and they were pulling hundreds of people into their fight; it was so stupid!â
Virgil smirked. âSounds pretty funny to me.â
âYou werenât there, it was terrible!â Dannyâs smile widened. âDonât even get me started on the school danceââ
Virgil smiled, settling in while Danny started an animated story about crushes, possessions, and ghost dragons. Itâll be a long night and he still had an English assignment to finish, but Virgil didnât mind in the slightest.
