New rules will radically change the way we use the internet in Australia, and not just social media
The way we use the internet in Australia is changing. Soon, it won’t just be social media platforms asking to verify your age. Come December, age verification requirements will also extend to search engines – with significant ramifications. That means you may need to scan your face or do an identity check to use a search engine as a logged-in user. And it’s unlikely to stop there: the eSafety commissioner is considering rules for mandatory age checks across the entire internet landscape. Whether or not you support the idea of age-gating the internet, this is a huge, unprecedented change. These are not small decisions; they will impact everyone who uses the internet in Australia – not just people under 16. There are implications for privacy, digital inclusion, access to information and online participation that go beyond the controversial teen social media ban. All of this warrants meaningful public debate. If this is the first time you’re hearing about it, you’re not alone...
HALT!✋😐
did you remember to express gratitude for not having to subsistence farm today?
Returning to subsistence farming as a society would be better than the capitalist hellscape we live under now. So no.
imma be real with you, thats a dumb as shit thing to say and you dont really believe that
I'm at work. I don't want to be at work. I'm tired and sweaty and my eternal companion the Headache is with me, and my lovely wife and animals and art projects are at home. Where I am not. Because I am at work.
And it beats the absolute hell out of starving to death because of droughts or flooding or crop blight or war or my wife having fucking cancer and being too tired and immunocompromised to work the fields with me.
Which is what would happen, if we were subsistence farming.
People literally can die if no one is well enough to do things like haul water to crops and feed animals.
Folks, farming is not a side hustle. It’s an entire lively hood based on weather and pork belly futures. I promise you, it is not something most people are resourced or equipped to do.
I grew up on a farm. Not a subsistence farm or an aesthetic urban farm, but a modern family farm.
These assholes never understand how much work -- sweaty, boring, frequently gross work -- is involved with all this. Repairing and maintaining equipment. Feeding and tending animals. Moving literal shit from one location to another, which is surprisingly large percentage of all farm work.
Cutting hay. Raking hay. Fucking baling hay during the hottest days of the year because that's when hay is baled (and when the hay is baled you still have to MOVE IT AGAIN). Being at the mercy of the weather constantly. Ugh. Getting the fUCKING grain burner to work because the rain didn't cooperate and if we don't dry it, it'll rot in the bins before we can sell it.
(I do miss the animals very much. Having ducklings eat out of my hand and calves to bottle feed and a horse to love on made this bearable for me growing up. I'll never have either again because I know the work would break me)
And because there's SOMEONE out there who will be like "well I'd RATHER be moving shit - "
This poster still wasn't subsistence farming. And the society they're in sure as fuck wasn't. They still had access to all kinds of shit that can't be grown on one family farm, and, crucially, they eventually had a choice. (Eventually, because when you're a kid if your family farms, you farm. Hate everything about it? Too bad.)
That "one acre farmstead" is me laughing in actual mediaeval history: we literally know that isn't enough to reliably feed one person and their animal through the entire off-season. No not even with zucchini (and you'd have to just eat zucchini all the time).
Also I ain't going to engage with them directly but I'm petty enough to point and laugh - there's someone in the notes talking about how they "supplemented" their living By Subsistence and I have my head in my hands with the laughter at the absurdity of that sentence.
Some people just don't know what the word "subsistence" means.
If you're "supplementing" your living then you're not subsistence farming, you just have a vegetable garden.
(To people who would rather be moving shit on a modern, non-subsistence farm... you can go and do that. There's a critical shortage of farm workers in most well-off countries. Because the work sucks and as soon as there's other options, two thirds of the farmers and their kids leave.)
just finished watching clarkson farm on prime.
gives a whole new perspective on the work it takes to run a farm and the costs

Some of you are probably sick of this comic already but there’s a dreadful rewrite by someone else with many mistakes and typos making the rounds, so I’m interested in putting the original out there as much as possible. I’m also including both epilogues, which not many know about!

I'll never forgive MAGA, third party, non-voters even if it is proven that the Republicans rigged the election because Trump (and by extension third-party candidates) never should've gotten a single vote in the first place, and the choice between Trump and Harris was the easiest one on the planet.
It was a test of character that every single MAGA, third party, and non-voter failed, and they can burn in hell for all I care.
When they voted for him in 2016, okay, sure, maybe they didn’t really know Trump back then. But they voted for him again in 2020 and in 2024. The sucker doesn't care he's being duped and played for a fool; in fact, he's happily emptying out his pockets. At a certain point, yeah, I stop having any sympathy left.
trump won because he was empathetic to voter concerns and priorities. the democrats lost because they were tone deaf to those voter concerns and priorities.
For instance; trump put the interest of "americans" first over the interests of "aliens", while democrats made the interests of "aliens" a priority over the interest of "americans". so of course trump won.
Democrats need to seriously shift their point of view and messaging on a lot of issues. it doesnt mean abandoning core beliefs. For instance: strong support of legal immigration but also have a emphatic rejection economic refugees (aka illegal immigrants). One of the biggest pool of trump supporters are legal immigrants, who are royally pissed that illegal immigrants are allowed to stay in the US.
Someone replied to my post in private, accusing me of being a trump supporter. They missed the point I was making. So, let me try again...
All politics is local. I didn't come up with that. It's a mantra that every political hack follows. Candidates win when they connect with local voters on a personal level. Usually, that means showing empathy for the other persons point of view. "Showing" is not the same as "being."
My point is trump is effective at pretending to be empathetic.
My point is the democrats need to actually BE empathetic.
My point is democrats have been tone deaf to what voters actually care about. You fix that by actually understanding what voters are concerned about and demonstrating empathy for their concerns.
A secret Russian-funded network is attempting to disrupt upcoming democratic elections in an eastern European state, the BBC has found.
The network promised to pay participants if they posted pro-Russian propaganda and fake news undermining Moldova’s pro-EU ruling party ahead of the country’s 28 September parliamentary ballot.
Russia denied it was interfering with Moldova’s electoral process.
This is an act of war. Russia is invading. They are just using secret operations and lies as their weapons instead of tanks. This cannot be permitted. They want to conquer the world. The world has to stand up and stop them.
Tariff?
since 1990, the US economy has increased in size by 6x while the World economy has increased by 2.5x in size. The US has the largest economy in the world because it consistently grows faster than every other country in the world. Which is why Tariffs are counter productive. Tariffs will hurt US economic growth; consensus seems to be a hit of 1% to 1.5% annual growth.
I'll never forgive MAGA, third party, non-voters even if it is proven that the Republicans rigged the election because Trump (and by extension third-party candidates) never should've gotten a single vote in the first place, and the choice between Trump and Harris was the easiest one on the planet.

Death Penalty
Just reading a post on the death penalty.
Pro: some people are evil and should not be allowed to live.
Con: 20% of people on death row are innocent. Not "oooh, my civil rights were violated innocent" but rather "trial was a complete fk up innocent".
In Canada, the number of convictions for "capital crimes" that have been overturned is astounding. The first priority in any criminal case is that an innocent person is never charged nor found guilty; yet this happens on a regular basis. Now, most cases of wrongful conviction are from over 20 years ago, when DNA/Forensics was not as good as it is today... but still. see Wrongful Convictions Data Visualized - CRWC.
the main problem with the death penalty is that innocent people are being executed. once that happens, there is no way to "right the wrong".
So, while I am ok with a lot of executions, the significant potential for wrongful convictions means only a total ban allows for the protection of the innocent.

On this Memorial Day, it is important to remember and honor the non-Jewish fallen—Israeli Arabs, Druze, and Bedouins—who gave their lives defending the country on October 7 and in the war since then. A long list of some of our finest, who sacrificed their lives for our nation:
Staff Sergeant (Res.) Ahmad Abu Latif, 26, from Rahat, a fighter in Battalion 8208.
Staff Sergeant (Res.) Salem Al-Karishat, 42, from Abu Rubaia, a tracker in the Northern Brigade, Gaza Division.
Master Sergeant (Res.) Anwar Sarhan, 26, from Hurfeish, a fighter in Battalion 910.
Sergeant First Class Sufian Dagash, 21, from Maghar, an engineering corps fighter.
Captain Jamal Abbas, 23, from Peki’in, a company commander in the Paratroopers.
Sergeant First Class Adi Malek Harb, 19, from Beit Jann, a commando in the Nahal Recon Unit.
Lieutenant Colonel Salman Habaka, 33, from Yanuh-Jat, a tank battalion commander.
Chief Sergeant Ibrahim Kharuba, 39, from Maghar, a tracker in the Northern Brigade, Gaza Division.
Sergeant Habib Kiyan, 21, from Hura, a fighter in the Golani Brigade.
Staff Sergeant Jawad Amer, 23, from Hurfeish, a live-fire zone manager in the Baram Formation.
Master Sergeant Salman Ibn Mar’i, 41, from Shavei Shalom, a tracker in the Southern Brigade, Gaza Division.
Lieutenant Colonel Alim Abdallah, 40, from Yanuh-Jat, deputy commander of the Baram Formation.
Sergeant First Class Daniel Rashad, 19, from Shefa-‘Amr, a fighter in the Golani Brigade.
Chief Sergeant Zayd Mazareeb, 34, from Zarzir, a tracker in the Southern Regional Brigade.
Captain Wasim Mahmoud, 23, from Beit Jann, deputy company commander in Battalion 601.
South Korean lawmakers voted unanimously to reverse President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of an "emergency martial law" on Tuesday. Yoon had
well this can't be good.
this is a "what the hell was he thinking" moment. at least the rest of the government showed up and nixed the declaration. there is a time for this type of emergency; this wasnt it.
Government of Canada (especially the NDP) have been Pro-Palestinian and have condoned terrorists leading Anti-Jewish protests across Canada.
There is a real distinction between "protest" and "intimidation". The police have done very little to protect the jewish community from the Palestinian protestors (most of whom are not Palestinian, but rather dupes of the Hamas propaganda machine).
Every protest I have seen coverage of, has been in support of Oct 7, that is, in support of terrorism. You want to protest Israeli actions in gaza, fine; you support Hamas' actions on Oct 7, not fine... that crosses the line from "protest" to "terrorism".
Somewhere between 400,000 and 500,000 people have died in the Syrian civil war, and it looks like out of the blue Assad has lost the second largest city in the entire country to a coalition of Salafi Jihadists and people being paid by Turkey.
The UN human rights office (bleh, I know) says about 300,000 civilians have been killed so far since 2011.
How is this not trending????? Like I know we said no Jews no news but damn…
thank Israel for taking out Hezbollah.
now, just need to do something about those russian jets.
FWIW be careful what you wish for, you just might get it. In Iraq, we wanted Saddam out... however, his people were keeping the country out of the hands of Iran. With Assad gone, who will be running Syria?
And the crazy thing is, these aren't just Ukraine's enemies. They are the enemies of democracies around the world. Defeating them benefits all free people. So why isn't everyone helping to defeat them?!
people that live on the border with Russia are buying weapons as fast as they can. people that are currently a "safe" distance away from Russia dont feel threatened.
Trumps insistance on NATO countries spending 2% on military is a Good Thing (tm). In Canada there is finally a political consensus to meet the 2% goal (however, the current government is not part of that consensus... they are focused on trying to buy votes so they dont get obliterated in the next election).

Trump
So, how long until Trump pulls a Putin and has the constitution changed to remove the 2 term limit for President?
